Affordable housing projects in Springfield in the works
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The lack of affordable housing in Springfield continues to be a drawback for residents, but some projects are coming to address that.
On Monday, Springfield City Council was introduced to a proposed zoning ordinance that if approved would create 32 single-family residential homes on a plot of land near Talmage and Grant.
'The comprehensive plan highlighted that Springfield currently has a shortage of housing units that are only attainable at the lowest income levels, and this shortage disproportionately impacts renter-occupied housing,' Senior Planner Michael Sparlin said. 'By encouraging higher density residential development, the city can provide a higher range of unique unit types sizes and price points within future development.'
It's an updated plan for developer Mike Stalzer, who in 2023 was open to buying the plot of land from a local church and not just building homes, but also turning an old gym on the property into apartments.

'We were going to redevelop the gymnasium into apartments, but I decided it probably would be better just to demolish the building and go with the single-family homes,' Stalzer said in a Planning and Zoning hearing last month.
When Ozarks First originally covered the story in 2023, several neighbors were voicing concerns about the increase in traffic and the proximity of the building to a nearby school.
At the January P&Z meeting, one woman spoke and said her concerns were addressed with the updated plans and another still voiced opposition to the project as a whole.
At the first reading of the bill to Springfield City Council on Feb. 10, no one spoke before the council.
Stalzer's project isn't the only one going on in Springfield looking to address affordable housing.
Last week, members of The Vecino Group broke ground on their effort called 'Sankofa,' a four-story development aiming to bring affordable housing to C-Street.
'[Sankofa] integrates both a business incubator and a street-level retail. It's going to deliver 42 brand new, affordable homes that serve as households, serve households at below 60% area medium income, and the idea of it will be to provide a strong path forward through job and business counseling for residents,' Jordan Gibson with The Vecino Group said. 'The incubator space will be managed by the Multicultural Business Association to focus on the success of minority-owned businesses for Springfield, and this is the first new from-the-ground-up development for Commercial Street in more than 50 years.'

The Vecino Group specializes in affordable housing.
'We have over 60 communities that we have developed in the past 14 years,' Gibson said. 'We have lots of different affordable housing options for just different populations and different needs, and we have supportive services that we offer on-site with local non-profits in those areas to help provide the services for those individuals and their needs.'
Jordan says affordable housing isn't just a Springfield issue, but a nationwide one.
'I think the state of affordable housing in Springfield is the same as it is across the US. It's the national crisis, prices of rent, housing, utilities, essentials,' Gibson said. 'Everything is just really going up these days and it makes it very difficult from the cost of living perspective and people are able to bring home from an income to provide the basic needs for their ultimate thriving of their lives. To be the best version of yourself that starts with stable, affordable housing.'
Sankofa is expected to open in 2026.
Springfield City Council is expected to vote on the Talmage/Grant project on February 24.

SGF Mayor address concerns about potential conflicts of interest with apparel at city events
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Social media posts have sparked concerns about potential conflicts of interest by new Springfield Mayor Jeff Schrag. Schrag, who founded Mother's Brewing Company, but only owns a small minority share in the company, made many residents raise their eyebrows when, during a controversial meeting on May 27 over the hiring of Springfield's newest city manager, Schrag was sporting a shirt with the Mother's logo on the front. Schrag sat down with Ozarks First and said it wasn't something he was paying attention to that day. '[It's] little shock no one to know that I don't spend a great deal of time thinking about what I'm wearing. Why I chose to grab that shirt the morning of the vote, I don't know. I don't have any memory of it. It wasn't necessarily intentional. I wear a lot of logo wear. I'm proud to wear Mother's logo wear. I also have a lot of Missouri State logo wear. So I'll continue to wear things with the Mother's emblem on them at Springfield Official Events,' Schrag said. Ozarks First did some digging into Schrag's wardrobe at official city events, and aside from an appearance at the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival press conference, Schrag has never worn a shirt with Mother's Brewing Company logos on it- except for that May 27 Special Council Meeting. 'I had a series of shirts made with the city flag on them. I love those shirts. I'm wearing one now to wear at events. I don't mind wearing logo wear, so I don't feel like it's a conflict of interest in any way. The city is not doing any business with Mother's Brewing Company, and that's where the conflict of interest or the ethics requirement comes about from the city charter and I'm a believer in adhering to those things, so no, I don't find a conflict and I'll keep doing what I've been doing,' Schrag continued. Ozarks First asked Schrag if, for any reason, Mother's Brewing Company entered into an agreement with the city, or sponsored a city event, if that would change Schrag's approach, or if it would have to be a case-by-case basis. Springfield passes skills-based hiring ordinance to reduce job barriers
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Springfield passed a skills-based hiring ordinance to expand access to city jobs. Springfield unveils 'Remembering Us' quilt for dementia awareness The Springfield City Council passed the ordinance, which authorizes all city departments to prioritize skills-based hiring standards wherever applicable. The change seeks to reduce barriers to employment for qualified candidates who demonstrate the skills needed to complete the job, but who may sometimes not have a college degree. City Councilor Jose Delgado was the lead sponsor of the ordinance, which will now direct the Personnel and Labor Relations Departments to implement a skills-based hiring policy for city departments and create alternate means of evaluating candidates beyond minimum degree requirements that had previously been implemented. 'This ordinance is about creating opportunity,' Delgado said. 'We have many qualified residents with valuable work experience and transferable skills who are locked out of good-paying city jobs. This policy helps Springfield tap into a broader, more diverse talent pool and builds a stronger, more representative workforce.' Similar initiatives have been adopted in other cities in Massachusetts, as well as in other states such as Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Colorado. College athletics is about to change forever
Hello everyone, I'm Dan Lucy on the Ozarks First digital desk. Friday night a federal judge approved a $2.8 billion dollar settlement that paves the way for colleges to pay their student-athletes. Starting July first, the old college formula of amateur athletes getting scholarships and meal money is gone. This is all the result of grant house. Grant was a swimmer at Arizona State University who said athletes invest a lot of their time and bring a lot money to the university, and they ought to get a cut of that. He sued the NCAA. And after nearly five years of bickering, both sides agreed to a settlement. And Friday a federal judge approved the deal. Out of that $2.8 billion dollars, colleges and universities will be allowed to pay out as much as $20 million dollars a year to their student athletes. That means about 50 percent of the school's sports revenue will pay athletic salaries. A cut of that money will also pay former athletes who missed out on name, image and likeness money. Where will they get all of that money? They'll try to solicit donations from alumni. And some sports economists say they'll have to make some cuts to things like coaches' pay, facilities and maybe even non-revenue-bearing sports. Richard Paulsen/Michigan Sports Management Professor: 'Another place you might see cuts is Olympic sports…. And now if more money is going to the athletes and football, let's say, that's less money that can be used to cover, you know, scholarships and some of these other sports.' Because of this settlement, teams will have roster limits instead of scholarship limits. That means there may not be any room for walk-ons. Another concern, the big power conference schools will just get richer and bigger. And who decides how much the athletes will get paid? The plan is for the conferences and universities to set the pay scale. One of the biggest and powerful conferences is the Southeastern Conference. Mizzou and Arkansas are a part of that super conference. And SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey reacted to the decision. And he says ultimately it'll be a good thing for college athletics.
