France's football union slams FIFA Club World Cup; calls it 'massacre' for players
France's Union of Professional Football Players (UNFP) has slammed FIFA's new Club World Cup, calling it a 'massacre' for players already worn out by packed schedules. The tournament has sparked major concerns about the health of players. The UNFP has accused FIFA's president, Gianni Infantino, of ignoring the problem.
The UNFP expressed their anger against the Club World Cup for pushing players to their limits. They called out FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, saying he's out of touch, living 'in an ivory tower' while players suffer. According to the UNFP, the tournament, which features 32 top teams, is more about money than caring for the sport's stars.
'The incongruity of the situation is not lost on anyone, except, of course, Gianni Infantino and his flatterers,' the UNFP said.
The FIFA Club World Cup comes right after an already exhausting season, leaving players with no time to rest. Most countries have rules giving footballers at least three weeks off between seasons, but due to the ongoing tournament, it is not possible. For example, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) stars like Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue went straight from the Champions League to play for France, then to the US for the Club World Cup. This non-stop schedule can lead to burnout and injuries.
The timing of the FIFA Club World Cup is causing chaos for clubs like PSG, who are already training for the Ligue 1 season starting in mid-August. Players aren't getting the rest they need, which could impact their performance.
The UNFP also pointed out that France's national team might suffer, as coach Didier Deschamps prepares for 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September.
'A delay in preparation that must also worry Didier Deschamps,' the UNFP noted.
The UNFP is demanding change by stating, 'It is urgent to stop this massacre game.' They want FIFA to respect players' right to rest and rethink the crowded calendar. The union also questioned Infantino, 'What do you say, Mr. Infantino?"
UNFP's fight over the FIFA Club World Cup isn't just about one event, it's about the future of the sport. With legal battles and strike threats already in the air, the UNFP's statement points to FIFA needing to balance making money with keeping players healthy. If they don't, the sport could lose its shine.

UEFA decision on Crystal Palace's Europa League fate delayed after Lyon controversy
UEFA has delayed its decision on Crystal Palace's Europa League spot for the 2025-26 season, which was expected on Monday. The FA Cup-winning Premier League side is under scrutiny due to a potential breach of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, which prohibit clubs with shared ownership from competing in the same European competition. John Textor, who holds a 44% stake in Palace, also co-owns Ligue 1 club Lyon. Textor has expressed willingness to sell his Palace shares to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Lyon's relegation to Ligue 2 over severe debt concerns is under appeal. UEFA has chosen to await the outcome of that appeal before ruling on Palace's eligibility. Should the appeal fail, Lyon has agreed to withdraw from the Europa League.

Dhoni makes a BIG move after IPL 2025 season, he has decided to…
CSK captain MS Dhoni. (Photo: ANI) Former India captain MS Dhoni had a season to forget in IPL 2025 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The 43-year-old was retained as an 'uncapped' player for just Rs 4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, after an injury to regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni was forced to take over the reins of the faltering CSK team in the middle of the season. However, Dhoni's 'Midas Touch' as captain deserted him in IPL 2025 as CSK finished in last place in 10th position with just 4 wins to their name. MS Dhoni is known as 'Captain Cool' The Jharkhand wicketkeeper is also known as 'Captain Cool' for his ice-cool nature under pressure. Weeks after the IPL 2025 season got over, Dhoni has made a major move to get a 'trademark' for the 'Captain Cool' property under his name. According to multiple media reports, Dhoni has submitted an application online on June 5 via the Trade Marks Registry portal, with the intention to officially claim ownership of the title that fans and the cricketing fraternity have used for years to define him. 'Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal,' said Dhoni's lawyer Mansi Aggarwal. MS Dhoni has applied for Word Mark – Captain Cool 🔥 Trademark Class 41 covers services related to education, training, entertainment, sporting & cultural activities. It's applied only for Sports Training, Sports Training facilities and sports coaching services. — WhistlePodu Army ® – CSK Fan Club (@CSKFansOfficial) June 30, 2025 Over the years, Dhoni has been become synonymous with the nickname 'Captain Cool'. It sums up his calmness under pressure, from guiding India to the 2007 T20 World Cup title to lifting the 2011 ODI World Cup and clinching the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. The move to trademark it signals a strategic brand play, likely aimed at leveraging it across categories such as apparel, digital content, and merchandise. Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Jordan as have their trademarks These kind of business decisions are common among global sports icons. While NBA and basketball legend Michael Jordan capitalised on the 'Jumpman' Air logo on Nike apparel, football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo turned 'CR7' into a business empire Dhoni continues to be a formidable commercial force even post-retirement. He has a brand valuation pegged at Rs 799 crore in 2024 and over 35 major endorsements under his belt. The former India skipper has the record of leading in the most matches in the IPL. Dhoni has captained in 235 matches in the IPL with 136 wins and 97 losses. Rohit Sharma is way behind him in second place on the list with 158 matches as captain and Virat Kohli is in third place with 143 matches in charge in IPL.

MS Dhoni files for trademark on his iconic cricket moniker 'Captain Cool'
Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has applied for a trademark on the moniker 'Captain Cool'. According to public records from the Intellectual Property India database, Dhoni submitted the application on June 5, 2023. The status of the trademark now shows 'accepted and advertised', indicating that it has passed preliminary scrutiny and is now open for opposition before final registration. The term 'Captain Cool' has long been associated with Dhoni, owing to his calm demeanour under pressure during crucial cricketing moments. The proposed trademark is registered under the category for 'sports training, providing sports training facilities, [and] sports coaching services'. Interestingly, another entity — Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited — had previously applied for the same term under Class 41 in July 2021. However, that application is currently marked with the status 'rectification filed', possibly due to a conflict or opposition, opening the way for Dhoni's claim. MS Dhoni joins elite ICC list MS Dhoni was formally inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame earlier this month during a ceremony in London, becoming the 11th Indian cricketer to receive the distinguished recognition. The former India skipper, who led the team to two World Cup titles, joins an elite list of cricketing greats. Dhoni is still the only captain in the history of the game to have clinched all three major ICC white-ball trophies — the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. As a batter, Dhoni redefined the finisher's role in One-Day Internationals. His unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005 remains the highest score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs. With over 10,000 runs in the format and an average exceeding 50, his contribution with the bat was both consistent and impactful. Equally formidable behind the stumps, Dhoni brought a new level of speed and precision to wicketkeeping, setting benchmarks with his quick glove work. Over the course of his career, he featured in 538 international matches for India, amassing 17,266 runs and 829 dismissals.
