LOS ANGELES : US immigration and border agents will be deployed at venues hosting Fifa Club World Cup games when the tournament kicks off this weekend, a US media report said Wednesday.
NBC television's Miami affiliate reported that members of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) along with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) would be on duty at Saturday's opener between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egypt's Al Ahly.
The report cited a CBP post on social media – since deleted – that said agents would be on the ground during the first round of games in the tournament.
'Let the games begin! The first Fifa Club World Cup games start on June 14th in Miami,' the post on X read. 'CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games.'
ICE raids carried out in Los Angeles last week as part of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown have triggered angry protests in the city.
The NBC report did not state what role ICE and CBP agents would have at Club World Cup games, nor did it give any indication of how many agents would be deployed.
An ICE spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment when contacted by AFP.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino meanwhile played down any concerns about ICE agents being deployed to Club World Cup matches.
'No, I don't have any concerns about anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security question,' Infantino told reporters at an event in Miami.
'Of course, the most important for us is to guarantee security for all the fans who come to the games. This is our priority. This is the priority of all the authorities who are here. And we want everyone who comes to the games to pass a good moment.'

Jordi Alba to Miss Inter Miami's Club World Cup Opener
INTER MIAMI will be without their Spanish international left back Jordi Alba for the opening game of the Club World Cup on Saturday against Egypt's Al Ahly. Miami coach Javier Mascherano told a press conference on Friday that the former Barcelona defender would have to sit out the Group A match at Hard Rock Stadium. In another blow for the Major League Soccer club, defensive midfielder Yannick Bright has also been ruled out of the opener for the 32-team tournament. 'Jordi and Yannick are not available for this game but hopefully they will be for the second game,' said the Argentine coach. Miami will play Porto on Thursday in Atlanta before closing out the group stage against Brazil's Palmeiras back in South Florida. Alba, who has a leg muscle injury, will be a major absence for Mascherano not only for his defensive abilities but for his role as one of the main providers of quality service to Lionel Messi. Bright has delivered some physical presence to the midfield alongside the wily but ageing Sergio Busquets. 'Obviously we would have loved to have everyone fit for this game and have our full roster, that would allow us to be stronger,' added Mascherano, who again expressed disappointment that the club had not been able to add new players as reinforcements for the tournament. Despite the setbacks, the former Barcelona and Liverpool midfielder said his team were relishing the challenge of playing on the international stage. 'This is a unique competition and we are privileged to be a part of it. We are here thanks to what we did last year and I think it is a huge opportunity to test each other out and see what our level is,' he added. Miami were handed a place in the tournament as the representative of the host nation thanks to winning the MLS Supporters' Shield which is awarded for the team with the best regular season record. However Miami did not finish as champions of MLS, losing to Atlanta in the first-round of the playoffs while the Los Angeles Galaxy went out to win MLS Cup. There was some surprise when media arrived at the venue and the markings were not yet in place on the field with some work being carried out on the surface. 'Let's hope it is in optimal condition, in this I think FIFA is well experienced but as I always say, we concentrate on things we can control,' said the Miami coach. Miami will hope the individual brilliance of Messi can help overcome their absences elswhere on the field. Jose Riveiro, Al Ahly's Spanish coach believes his team, who are widely considered the most successful club in Africa, aren't under-estimating Miami given the presence of the eight-times Ballon d'Or winner. 'Above all else he has a skill that is incredible, he has a brilliant understanding of what is happening on the field. He is still the player he was, in the final third, close to goal and he has a great understanding with Busquets and Luis Suarez,' he said. 'I think it is about to ensuring they don't get good service and trying to stop them. We know there are things that we need to do very well so that (Miami) might make mistakes,' added Riveiro.

Soccer-Messi magic needed for Inter Miami as injuries pile up
Soccer Football - Club World Cup - Inter Miami Training - Florida Blue Training Center, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, U.S. - June 13, 2025 Inter Miami's Lionel Messi during training REUTERS/Hannah Mckay MIAMI (Reuters) -Inter Miami will have to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's firepower as they prepare for Saturday's Club World Cup opener against Al-Ahly, with coach Javier Mascherano forced to re-shuffle his backline due to a string of injuries. Fullback Jordi Alba, fellow defender Gonzalo Lujan and defensive midfielder Yannick Bright have all been ruled out of the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium. "They are not available for this game, hopefully they will be for the second game," Mascherano told a press conference on Friday. Alba, one of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, is sidelined with a hamstring issue. There were also concerns regarding the fitness of centre back David Martinez. "David had some kind of pain yesterday and we did not want to take any risks," said Mascherano. "The reality is that throughout the season, the team have dealt with injuries, but the players who stepped in rose to the challenge. That gives us peace of mind," he said. Miami have conceded 16 goals in their last six competitive games. Much of Miami's chances rest on Messi's shoulders. "He's in good shape this season. There were moments when we had to give him some time to rest, but he's played the last 15 games, except for the match against Dallas when we rested the entire squad," said Mascherano. "We were also fortunate he was able to rest during Argentina's last two games," he added referring to Messi playing 111 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia earlier this month. "It's our responsibility to create the right environment for him to shine." Miami will also take on Porto and Palmeiras in the 32-club competition.
