Got Allergies? This One Type Of Vacuum Could Make A Big Difference

If you have carpets or rugs, sorry: They're even dirtier than you think.
If you've been hiding in your home to escape seasonal allergens, sorry: Your indoor space poses its own problems, from dust mites and pet dander to mite and cockroach waste, especially if you have carpets, rugs or fabric decor.
Vacuums with HEPA filtration, like Shark's 'worth every penny' upright vacuum, are more effective at trapping these allergenic micro-particles than your standard vacuum, and can filter some particles from smoke and pollution, too.
'Most particles that trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, like dust mites and mold spores, are airborne for a short time and then settle as dust,' explained Dr. James Sublett, an allergist and air quality specialist for the Allergy and Asthma Network. 'Homes with carpets are a reservoir of allergens; each time someone walks across or vacuums the carpet, particles fill the air.'
While vacuuming won't completely remove all mites or dander from your environment, vacuums with HEPA filters 'help keep mites and mite waste from getting back into the air,' according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
The best practice? Use your HEPA vacuum at least once weekly, and run a HEPA air purifier at the same time (like this popular Levoit option). 'Using a HEPA vacuum will trap some particles, leaving others that are stirred up into the breathing space to be removed by room or whole house air filtration,' wrote Sublett. (For extra protection, wear a mask while you clean.)

Designed with a sealed HEPA filter to trap allergens and dust within the machine, Shark's upright vacuum purportedly captures 99.9% of allergens and dust with a staggering 1,416 watts of suction power. Folks love this thing so much, they're literally buying spares. 'For allergy sufferers this is 5-star stuff,' wrote one reviewer.
The vacuum is equipped with a large-capacity dust cup for longer cleaning sessions, multiple attachments, including pet hair and crevice tools, and a detachable pod for tackling spots high up.
While the Shark Navigator is beloved by reviewers, who've given the piece an impressive 80,000 5-star ratings, if you prefer a cordless option, this Dyson V15 vacuum is pricier but equipped with a HEPA filter and up to 60 minutes of run time.

'Wow, for this money, a total home run. HEPA, detachable handle and portable PLUS IT CLEANS.... love the adjustable suction control, floor to carpet height adjustment is easy access ..... My wife is a 'cleaner', first time she used it was off the charts happy. And for me, no nasty smelling air coming out of of the filter. Highly recommended.' — K. Wilson
'Absolutely a great vacuum. Only had a month, but after seeing reviews online it truly is amazing. Easy to assemble. Have two boxers who shed a lot. Suction and pickup is absolutely unbelievable. With HEPA filtration, no stinky vacuum smell. No more changing carpet to bare floor adjustments as on cheaper models. Easy to empty. Excellent feature for people who have stairs-canister easily removed and suction power is wonderful from hose. Noise is low. Easy to maneuver the unit across floor-not traditional wheels. Watch video comparison of models and you won't hesitate.' — Tom H
'I did a test with this unit out of the box. I vacuumed with my older canister vacuum with a HEPA filter, then I repeated with my Shark. It picked up small dirt and tons of dust. I was amazed, embarrassed and relieved to have a new unit that actually cleaned as I vacuumed. If you are questioning your older vacuum, give this a try and find out for yourself. I got this on sale and recommend to anyone who wants superior performance at a bargain price.' — Robert Wojnowski
'Absolutely love this. I've been using a cheapy stick vacuum for a year. No pets, just me, my husband, and our toddler. We have three carpeted bedrooms upstairs and one rug in the downstairs. I did a VERY quick once over all of the carpeted areas with this thing and this picture is the amount of dirt I got. Absolutely in shock. Prior to this, I was vacuuming at least 3 times a week with our stick handle crap vacuum and I try to keep the house very clean at all times (minimal amount of dust, grime, etc. we all have killer allergies). Heck, we use the highest quality HEPA filters for our HVAC AND have a large capacity air purifier. Still, the difference a good vacuum can make clearly can't be beat. This thing is no joke for suction, very powerful but still pretty easy to carry and maneuver considering it's size. Easy to click together after unboxing. Canister emptying seems easy enough, and I like that the lifespan of the filters is literally year s.' — Olivia Dunn

3 pillow materials that can make your allergies worse — and what to choose instead
Struggling to sleep due to allergies? Your pillow might be the last thing you suspect to be triggering them, but certain materials found in even the best pillows of the year are notorious for causing allergic reactions. So, depending on what you're currently sleeping on, you might need to shop for a replacement. As well as factors like your sleeping position, it's important to consider your health needs when purchasing a new pillow. And to help you choose with confidence, we've listed the three pillow fill materials most likely to trigger allergies, as well as three hypoallergenic options for you to consider instead. Let's dive deeper... Feathers and down make up the dream pillow fill thanks to the unmatched comfort and support they deliver, no matter what your sleeping position is. This is why most luxury hotel pillows feature a calculated blend of both, resulting in a plush yet supportive pillow. Unfortunately, feathers and down are the pillow fills most likely to trigger allergies among sleepers. This is because of a certain type of protein in bird feathers that causes allergic reactions such as sneezing, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing or rashes. Research has shown that synthetic fibers in pillows can harbor dust mites and common allergens at a much higher rate than natural feathers and down. This mainly happens due to two reasons: Firstly, dust mites tend to accumulate in a warm, humid environment where they feed on dead skin cells, and synthetic fibers, being less breathable and moisture-trapping, provide just that. Secondly, synthetic pillow covers tend to be looser than tightly-woven feather-proof encasings, allowing easier access for mites. Organic latex is naturally hypoallergenic, but what if you're allergic to latex itself? According to the Allergy and Asthma Network, latex allergy is quite rare, affecting roughly 1-6% of adults. Latex allergy is triggered by direct skin contact with latex or by inhaling latex particles. This can lead to irritated skin, rashes, hives, sneezing or a scratchy throat in some individuals, however in some cases an allergic reaction to latex can be life-threatening. Like the best memory foam mattresses, pillows made with memory foam are known to be supremely contouring, giving you pressure-relieving comfort and support, easing you into a good night's sleep. While it's man-made and factory-produced, memory foam is an excellent hypoallergenic pillow fill, thanks to its dense cell structure that prevents the accumulation of dust mites and other allergens. We'd specifically recommend that you choose CERTI-PUR US certified memory foam pillows, as this indicates that the foam is free from harmful chemicals and ozone depleters, and made with low emission materials for better indoor air quality. A down alternative fill mimics the same plush luxury fluffiness and support of natural down, but with hypoallergenic properties. This is good news for sleepers who want the temperature-regulating comfort of natural down, without enduring symptoms such as sneezing and coughing. Down alternative pillows are usually manufactured using synthetic materials like polyester and microfiber, which are produced to be at a certain thickness and weave in order to replicated that dreamy down feel. These are not be confused with the cheaper polyester fill pillows, as they may prove to be counterproductive for your allergies. Modern technology means that you can now get hold of specialized pillows treated to be immune against dust mites, bed bugs, mold and bacteria. Such pillows are often made by incorporating additional barriers using hypoallergenic materials, or by putting them through anti-microbial treatment. A great example would be the Westin Soft Hotel pillow, a top-tier hotel headrest that features both a hypoallergenic fiber fill and anti-microbial treatment. If you're a chronic allergy sufferer, choosing a pillow with a hypoallergenic fill is essential. However, no pillow is 100% free from all kinds of allergens, so you need to shop carefully. Regular care and maintenance is also required to ensure that your allergy tendencies won't be exacerbated due to dust mites, pollen or pet dander in your pillows. Just as you'd use the best mattress protectors to safeguard your bed against common allergens, it's important to have a pillow protector under your pillowcase, too. This ensures that there is an extra layer acting as a barrier against allergens. Experts also recommend washing your bedding every two weeks and drying it outside (if the weather allows), as sunlight has proven effects on bacteria and dust mites. Replacing your pillows every one to two years is also crucial to maintaining a clean and uninterrupted night's sleep.

Parents Are Obsessed With This Viral Stroller, So As A New Mom Myself, I Had To Give It A Try
Hello, friends. I'm Crystal and I became a first-time mom last year, which means I'm low-key obsessed with finding cool, interesting, and viral parenting products. Crystal Ro / BuzzFeed One of the places I see really interesting parenting products is social media (ESPECIALLY TikTok). And, thanks to ~algorithms~ the viral and highly beloved Bugaboo Butterfly stroller came up in my feed. So when I learned about the brand NEW, Bugaboo Butterfly 2, which just dropped June 3, I jumped at the opportunity to try one out! Note: I was sent the Bugaboo Butterfly 2 free to try out for editorial review, but was under no obligation to give a positive review. These are 100% my honest thoughts. So, the Bugaboo Butterfly 2 (which retails for $599.00) is a travel stroller, meaning it's designed to be lightweight, easy to carry, and something you can fold up in, like, one-second and with one hand. Obviously, there are many travel strollers out there, but the Bugaboo Butterfly (both the original and this new version) is considered top-of-the-line, hence the higher price range. And it comes up A LOT on social media and even Reddit. @houseofbebeuk / Via Google/Reddit For a breakdown, here are some of the highlights of the Butterfly 2 compared to the original: New back-seat pocket for easy-access essentials — perfect for your phone, keys, wipes, and snacks. Bigger, tougher wheels with full suspension for smoother rides — tested to handle over 2,485 miles. One-second, IATA-compatible fold — fits in overhead bins and tested for over 10,000 fold cycles. Upgraded sun canopy with a redesigned peekaboo window — gives better visibility and sun protection. Integrated comfort features — featuring a one-hand adjustable footrest, shoulder strap, and extra-padded harness. Ultra-lightweight at just 16 lbs — Bugaboo's lightest stroller yet. Bugaboo's lowest CO₂ footprint ever — 37% lower than the original, made with 60% recycled aluminum and bio-based plastics. And after "road testing" the Bugaboo Butterfly 2 for a couple of weeks — through the neighborhood, parks, malls, and even North America's largest IKEA — here's what I thought: I'm OBSESSED with how small and lightweight it is. For the last year-ish, I've been using a much larger "regular" stroller — which has been great for transporting our baby when he was younger in his infant car seat, which easily snapped into the large stroller, as well as being able to haul ALL the things needed for an infant — but I'd be lying if I said it was easy to use. Like, the thing is big and heavy. So, being able to use a travel stroller without the struggle I normally go through with my "regular" one felt incredible LOL. I looooove being able to open and close it with one hand. Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Crystal Ro / BuzzFeed As I mentioned above, our previous stroller was large and you cannot close it with one hand. It seems like a small thing, but being able to hold your child (or for demonstration purposes with a pillow of my cat as in the GIF above) while simultaneously opening and/or closing a stroller is, like, huge. Love how easy it is with this. It's really compact — did I mention how much I love how small the stroller is?!? For comparison's sake, above is a photo of our regular stroller in my car's trunk vs. the Bugaboo Butterfly 2 (diaper bag for scale). It's like night and day. Being able to have more room for groceries and just STUFF is major. Another win. Also, in case you are wondering, the Butterfly strollers are IATA-compatible and designed to be TSA-approved, meaning they can be stored in the overhead compartment of an airplane when folded. (I haven't had the chance to try this out yet, but this was another MAJOR plus to me!) The nearly-full recline is very handy. Apparently, the first version of the Bugaboo Butterfly did not recline as far as this one. Our regular stroller has a full recline, which was handy for when our baby was younger and slept all the time since newborns need to sleep in a flat position. I've also always found the full recline feature helpful for changing diapers when a changing station (or even a clean one) isn't nearby. And while this stroller doesn't have a full recline, it gets pretty close, and it was enough for us to do a couple of diaper changes! It's a super smooth ride. Our regular stroller has much larger, air-filled wheels, so it's a VERY smooth ride. And, TBH, I was a little suspicious if the Butterfly 2, with its smaller, hard wheels, would be as smooth. But, to my surprise, it was?! Admittedly, I didn't exactly "off-road" with this stroller, but even on pavement and a few different terrains, the stroller moved really smoothly and had some good shock absorption. As I said, I tested this baby out in North America's largest IKEA (in Burbank, CA) — which, if you've been to an IKEA, you know how busy it can get — and I was able to maneuver between small aisles and meandering people with more ease than the regular stroller. It can actually fit a decent amount of stuff even though the storage space in the under-carriage is significantly smaller than our "regular" stroller. I was pretty impressed at how much I could fit in the bottom of the stroller. Now, admittedly, if we were going to be out for a long day or in a situation where we needed to carry a full diaper bag, toys, food, etc., then it would be a struggle to make it all fit underneath. But for purposes of popping out to a grocery store, or just going for a walk, etc. this worked great. Other cool features I liked: The pocket in the back and the peep window on the sun shade. From what I'm told, these are small changes/additions to the Butterfly 2, and I think they're great additions. The pocket in the back came in handy a number of times while out and about — I used it for my son's hat, some sunscreen, and toys — and the peep window in the sun shade above is always nice to have to check on your child while out for a walk. For example, I like checking if he is pulling his sun hat off for the 50th time (the answer is usually yes!). A couple of things I think could be improved: adding a handlebar height adjustment and more padding for the handlebar. A big advantage of our regular stroller vs. this travel one is that you can adjust the height of the handlebar. For someone short (I am 5'2"!) who has a taller husband, this is an important feature to have. I'm guessing in order to keep the Butterfly 2 as lightweight and compact as possible, this wasn't an option. I also found that the handlebar of the Butterfly 2, compared to our regular stroller, was not as comfortable over a longer period of time. I found that my hands started to cramp up a little (although my husband didn't have this issue, go figure), so maybe thicker padding on the grip would help. It might be nice to see these features fine-tuned if they do a Butterfly 3 in the future! TL; DR — I LOVED the Bugaboo Butterfly 2 stroller. In fact, it's now become my go-to stroller over our regular one because of its easy-to-use features. So, if you've been considering getting one or you're in the market for a travel stroller, 10/10 would recommend!
