Mithi River desilting fraud: Cops probing bank transactions between Dino Morea, arrested accused
MUMBAI: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police has found a couple of bank transactions between actor Dino Morea and Ketan Kadam, one of the arrested accused in the Mithi River desilting fraud case, officers said. The transactions are from the period of the alleged financial irregularities found in the desilting work contracts, from 2019 to 2022, officers added.
An EOW officer said the agency learned about the financial transactions between Morea and Kadam, who have known each other for around 25 years, after the latter was arrested and interrogated. The officer, however, refused to divulge further details such as the amounts involved in the transactions and who paid whom.
Morea and his brother Santino were also called in for questioning on Wednesday regarding the transactions. The siblings reached the EOW's office around 1 pm and were questioned until late in the evening, the officer said. They were also asked to bring some documents, which are being verified, added the officer.
This was the second time this week that the Moreas were called in for questioning. They were interrogated for eight hours on May 26 after the EOW came across phone records indicating the brothers had been in contact with some people linked to the case. The agency has also found that Santino Morea and Ketan Kadam's wife, Punita, are directors in a private company, UBO Ridez Private Limited, which operates Victoria-style electric carriages in Mumbai.
The EOW has also initiated the process of hiring an audit firm to assist it in the investigation. Since there are multiple firms and bank accounts involved, a forensic audit is required to get clarity in the case, said the officer.
The agency has booked 13 people so far in the case, including three Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers. The EOW has also sought certain documents from the civic body, as it is investigating how Ketan Kadam's desilting services company, Woder India LLP, got various civic contracts. Kadam was arrested on May 7, along with Jayesh Joshi, who is associated with Virgo Specialties Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai-based industrial product manufacturer.
The case involves alleged financial irregularities, inflated tenders, and corrupt practices linked to desilting work for the Mithi River, which, according to the EOW, led to a loss of ₹65.54 crore for the BMC.
The accused BMC officers are accused of publishing tenders for desilting machines and equipment with tailored specifications such that a Kochi-based company, Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd, got a monopoly. When contractors approached Matprop to buy the equipment, they were directed to Joshi and Kadam, who, in connivance with the company, rented the machines at inflated rates, according to the agency.

Turkey gets more punishment for supporting Pakistan as India cancels major deal with..., Modi govt teaching Erdogan lesson by...
(File) India Turkey relations: In another major move to punish Turkey for supporting Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cancelled a major deal to to procure robotic lifebuoys from a Turkish robotics firm. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani Monday said the Mumbai civic body has scrapped its plan to procure robotic lifebuoys manufactured in Turkey. The robotic lifebuoys, remotely-operated rescue machines designed to assist lifeguards in saving people from drowning, were to be deployed at the Girgaum Chowpatty, Shivaji Park Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai beaches in Mumbai, the BMC said, according to news agency PTI. Equipped with dual water jets powered by a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery, each robotic lifebuoy unit had the load capacity of up to 200 kg, and could travel 800 metres into the sea at speeds up to 18 km/h and operate for about an hour, according to details. The BMC faced sharp criticism from politicians, including from the ruling BJP and its ally Shiv Sena, for its plan to buy these automated lifebuoys from Turkey in the wake of Ankara extended diplomatic and military support to Islamabad during last month's India-Pakistan military clash. Political leaders raised questions about why the civic body was procuring equipment from a foreign supplier instead of promoting indigenous alternatives. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and China, were the only country that openly supported Pakistan in its recent military confrontation with India which escalated after Indian armed forces conducted Operation Sindoor– a series of precision strikes on terrorist infrastructures inside Pakistan– to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Following Turkey's open support to Pakistan, India took a slew of measures to downgrade ties with Eurasian country, including cancelling major business deals with Turkish firms. FIR against IT firm accountant for not making PF, ESIC payments
The Mumbai police Tuesday registered an FIR against the accountant of an IT company who allegedly defrauded the company of over Rs 21 lakh by not making Provident Fund (PF) and Employee State Insurance Scheme (ESIC) payments on behalf of the company for nearly three years. The accused woman allegedly made fake PF and ESIC challans to claim payments were made on behalf of the over 60 employees. In addition to this, she allegedly edited other bills and payments that were to be made to clients and diverted the money to other accounts instead of making the entire payment. As per the FIR registered by the Pant Nagar police in Ghatkopar (east) on Tuesday based on a complaint by the director of a company, the accused was working at the Bhandup-based company since 2014. The company found that from November 2021 to November 2024, the accused had not made the payment towards PF and ESIC on behalf of the employees. An official said when a company employee responsible for transferring the money to PF and ESIC accounts told her that the payment status was not visible on the portal, she told him that the company had a financial problem and that the payment would be done once it was solved. When one of the employees complained to her that he was not receiving an SMS every month about PF being deposited in his account, she told him that since the company had not completed the KYC, the employees were not receiving messages. When he was about to complain to the director, she allegedly told him she can give him Rs 50,000 to help him financially. The company further found that several payments that were due to other clients too were not made in its entirety and fake ledger entries were made to conceal the same. Senior inspector of Pant Nagar Rajesh Kevale said that after the company started receiving intimations from PF and ESIC about no contributions being received, they started checking their accounts and found out about the fraud. Kevale said that based on the director's complaint, they registered an FIR against the woman on charges of cheating and forgery. No arrest has been made as yet.
