China's humanoid robot sector enters mass production with Unitree, AgiBot among pack

China's
humanoid robot manufacturers are charging full steam ahead to mass production, which a new report said would boost the total value of automata made on the mainland this year to about 4.5 billion yuan (US$616 million).

Six out of 11 domestic humanoid robot makers, which had set their mass production initiatives in 2024, plan to manufacture more than a thousand units this year, market research firm TrendForce said in a report released on Monday.
Along with
Tesla CEO
Elon Musk 's target to produce thousands of
Optimus robots this year, China's
robotics supply chain is expected to benefit from this development, according to the Taipei-based research firm.
The advent of mass production reflects intensifying competition in China's robotics industry, which is fuelled by an
artificial intelligence boom and the country's drive for technology self-sufficiency.

After 3 up days, S&P 500 falls on trade announcement

After 3 up days, S&P 500 falls on trade announcement Besides trade, markets on Wall Street also digested key US inflation data. Photo: AFP Wall Street stocks finished lower on Wednesday despite positive movement in the US-China trade conflict and a benign US inflation report. Following two days of talks in London, top US and Chinese negotiators announced a "framework" agreement late on Tuesday, but stocks fell in what described as a "sell the news" response to a breakthrough that had been largely priced in. The S&P 500, which rose the last three days, finished down 0.3 percent at 6,022. The Dow Jones was flat at 42,865, while the Nasdaq dropped 0.5 percent to 19,615. Besides trade, markets digested key inflation data. US consumer prices rose 2.4 percent compared with a year ago, up from a 2.3 percent reading for the prior month, a modest uptick that analysts said still did not fully reflect the impact of Trump's tariffs. Sam Stovall of CFRA Research described Wednesday's session as a "rollercoaster," positing that the negative finale may reflect unease at reports Trump could appoint a "shadow" Federal Reserve Chair to try to influence monetary policy without firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Stovall also highlighted the possibility that "the market is overbought and due for some sort of digestion of gains." Among those falling, large tech names including Amazon, Facebook parent Meta and Apple lost more than one percent. (AFP)

Mainland China scientists build electronic war game for Taiwan and nearby waters

A PLA mobile electronic warfare platform deployed southeast of Taiwan activates its emitter, shattering the electromagnetic silence with powerful pulses, which are initially blocked by the island's towering central mountain range. Advertisement But while the key eastern military bases are unaffected at first, gradually the signals navigate the complex terrain, reflecting like mirrors off slopes and scattering across rough surfaces. Eventually, they cross the peaks to blanket the entire island and its surrounding waters. Signals in parts of eastern Taiwan could rival the strength of those in the west. Even distant Taipei detects disturbances, though some shielded valleys remain signal-free – potential hideouts that require vigilance. This war game scenario is played out in an ultra-detailed simulation that for the first time covers a vast theatre spanning Taiwan and adjacent seas, modelling intricate landforms with nanosecond-level precision. The simulation was created by an electromagnetic battlespace emulator built by a team of researchers led by professor Shao Shihai from the University of Electronic Science and Technology in Chengdu, the capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan. Advertisement 'This method significantly improves computational speed while maintaining precision and high time-delay resolution,' they wrote in a peer-reviewed paper published by the Chinese-language Journal of Electronics & Information Technology in March. '[It] fulfils the computational requirements for channel modelling in large-scale battlefield environments,' they added.

Vice premier He calls for equal dialogue with US

Vice premier He calls for equal dialogue with US At the London trade talks are, from left, Jamieson Greer, Howard Lutnick, Scott Bessent, He Lifeng, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, and Chinese International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang. Photo: AFP The United States should resolve trade disputes with China through equal dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation, Vice Premier He Lifeng said. China reiterates that the United States should work with China to honour their words with actions and demonstrate sincerity in keeping commitments and concrete efforts to implement consensus so as to jointly safeguard the hard-won outcomes of dialogue, He said. The vice premier made the remarks during the first meeting of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism held in London on Monday and Tuesday with the US delegation led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. During the talks, the two sides held candid and in-depth talks and thoroughly exchanged views on economic and trade issues of mutual concern. The two sides reached a principled agreement on implementing the important consensus reached by the two heads of state during their phone call on June 5 and the framework of measures to consolidate the outcomes of the economic and trade talks in Geneva, and made new progress in addressing each other's economic and trade concerns. Calling the meeting an important consultation held under the guidance of the strategic consensus reached by the two heads of state on June 5, He said China's position on Sino-US economic and trade issues is clear and consistent. Noting that the essence of Sino-US economic and trade relations lies in mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, he said cooperation in the economic and trade field benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both. There are no winners in trade wars, he said, adding that China does not seek conflict but will not be intimidated by one. The vice premier urged the United States to resolve trade disputes with China through equal dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation, adding that while China is sincere in pursuing economic and trade consultations, it also has its principles. Next, the two sides should, in accordance with the important consensus and requirements reached by the two heads of state during their phone call, make better use of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism and work to enhance their consensus, reduce misunderstandings and strengthen cooperation, He said. The two sides should maintain communication and consultation and promote the steady and sustained growth of Sino-US economic and trade relations so as to inject more certainty and stability into the world economy, He added. The US side said that the meeting had achieved positive outcomes and further stabilized bilateral economic and trade relations, adding that it would walk in the same direction as China in accordance with the requirements of the phone call between the two heads of state to jointly implement the consensus reached at this meeting.
