Honours even as Drogheda deny Shelbourne once again

RTÉ News19-05-2025

It was the defences who came out on top as both Shelbourne and Drogheda played out an entertaining goalless stalemate at Tolka Park in which both teams will feel they had chances to take all three points.
The champions, who welcomed back Damien Duff to the dugout after his suspension, were desperate to bounce back from Friday's costly defeat to rivals Bohemians, in which they lost their skipper Mark Coyle and Ali Coote to dismissals at Dalymount, but showed no signs of ring-rust early on.
A flowing move down the right side eventually saw Harry Wood cross to the back post to James Norris. The on-loan Liverpool full-back cushioned a header to Ellis Chapman, whose first-time strike was bravely blocked by Elicha Ahui.
The Drogs, who have been enjoying the tussle at the opposite end of the table to what most would have predicted, had been unbeaten against the hosts this season with a win and a draw and defended resolutely.
Both sides went into the clash desperately seeking a win - with matching records of one victory in their last seven games - and there was nothing to separate the sides as the half developed.
Growing in confidence, they began to grow in confidence and almost took the lead themselves when Conor Kearns misjudged Ahui's cross but it just trickled wide.
The home side were dealt a blow when Kearns seemed to pick up a knock after his error, receiving treatment before departing to allow Lorcan Healy to make his league debut
But despite the loss it was the home side who finished the half the stronger with Wood having three chances in quick succession. The first of which the Englishman showed great movement to get on the end of Tyreke Wilson's deep cross, but saw the flick towards goal go agonisingly wide..
The start of the second half followed the same pattern as the first ended as Shels looked to pin back the FAI Cup winners, but they just lacked a cutting edge in the final third with the final killer ball lacking.
Kevin Doherty's side sent a quick reminder of the threat they possessed when Douglas James-Taylor got a free run to get on the end of Owen Lambe's out-swinging corner but failed to hit the target.
Another long ball from Dennison caused all sorts of confusion for Shels defence with the towering Andrew Quinn winning a header before the ball was eventually scrambled away.
The tension was palpable as the game entered the dying embers, with one goal looking like it would be enough for either side.
With time running out, James-Taylor was brilliantly denied by the impressive Healy, having shown excellent feet to twist and turn inside the area.
Substitute Thomas Oluwa had a glorious chance to nick a winner, showing his power and pace to get in behind before rounding the onrushing Healy who forced him wide before saving low and on the rebound, the busy Markey failed to get his shot through a sea of bodies in the box as it remained 0-0.
Shelbourne: Conor Kearns (Lorcan Healy, 29); Sean Gannnon, Kameron Ledwidge, Tyreke Wilson; Evan Caffrey, Ellis Chapman, JJ Lunney (John Martin, 65), Kerr McInroy, James Norris (Ryan O'Kane, 72); Harry Wood (John O'Sullivan, 72), Mipo Odubeko.
Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; Owen Lambe, Elicha Ahui, Conor Keely, Andrew Quinn, Conor Kane; Ryan Brennan, Luke Heeney, Shane Farrell (Darragh Markey, 74); Warren Davis (Thomas Oluwa, 72), Douglas James-Taylor.

Drogheda in talks with UEFA with European place in question over multi-club ownership rules

IRISH soccer side Drogheda United say they are in talks with UEFA with the organisation's multi-club ownership rules posing questions over the Drogs' place in Europe next season. The League of Ireland side qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League following their FAI Cup victory over Derry City last November. However, the Drogs' participation in Europe for the first time in 12 years could be at risk after Danish side Silkeborg also qualified for the competition yesterday and are due to enter at the same stage. Both Drogheda and Silkeborg — as well as English League Two side Walsall and African side Trivela FC Togo — are owned by Trivela Group. The organisation took control of Drogheda in February 2024 and acquired Silkeborg 10 months later. However, UEFA has strict rules around clubs with the same owners competing in the same European competition. 'Ongoing discussions' In a statement after Silkeborg qualified for Europe on Sunday with a 3-1 defeat of Randers in the Danish Superliga European play-off match, Drogheda said it had been 'working proactively' on the issue. "Drogheda United Football Club can confirm that it has been engaged in ongoing discussions with UEFA in recent months regarding a regulatory matter that has now arisen following Silkeborg IF's qualification for the UEFA Conference League qualifiers," it read. "As supporters will know, Silkeborg IF is also part of the Trivela Group ownership structure, which includes Drogheda United. "UEFA's regulations regarding multi-club ownership and participation in UEFA Club Competitions require careful consideration, and the club has been working proactively with the relevant authorities. "At this time, due to the confidential and ongoing nature of the process, Drogheda United is unable to provide further comment. "However, the club remains committed to transparency and will provide updates as soon as there are any significant developments to share. "We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our fans, partners, and wider community." Similar cases Premier League club Chelsea faced a similar situation last month when both they and French side Strasbourg — both owned by BlueCo — were on course to qualify for the Champions League. Ultimately, the London side qualified while Strasbourg finished 7th in Ligue 1, qualifying for the Conference League play-off round instead. Similarly, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis diluted his control of the Premier League club in anticipation of qualifying for the Champions League by placing his shares in a blind trust. Olympiacos, who are also owned by Marinakis, qualified for the competition after winning the Greek Super League, while Forest ultimately finished in seventh, qualifying for the Conference League play-off round. Drogheda have had five previous European campaigns, the last in the 2013-14 season when they lost 2-0 on aggregate to Swedish side Malmo in the first qualifying round of the Europa League. The club's best performance in Europe was in the 2008-09 season, when they reached the second qualifying round of the Champions League, where they narrowly lost 4-3 on aggregate to Dynamo Kyiv. Silkeborg, who competed in the group stage of the Conference League in 2022-23, have qualified for Europe for the third time in four seasons. Love Island star Toby hoping for call-up from Irish national football team

Love Islander Toby has designs on playing for Ireland while Catherine is game for Dancing with the Stars Catherine Agbaje and Toby Aromolaran launch Virgin Media Play: Get Play,Your Way Love Island star Toby Aromolaran is hoping for a call-up from not just a League of Ireland side but the Irish national football team. The 26-year-old, who finished second on the hit TV show in 2021 when he reached the final alongside Chloe Burrows, is a footballer with semi-professional club Hashtag United, and its men's team plays in the Isthmian League Premier in the UK. 'If an Irish team gave me a trial in the Irish league, I would, why not? It would be a bit of fun,' Toby says. 'My mum (Victoria) is from Crossmolina in Co Mayo and I've got an Irish passport. 'I play as a forward with Hashtag United, both on the wings and as a striker.' Toby is setting his footballing sights high. 'I don't see why Ireland don't call me up, why not? I'm just waiting for the manager to call,' he winks. Finalists Toby and Chloe Toby, who grew up in Essex and whose dad is from Nigeria, is a regular visitor to Ireland. 'I was in Mayo last year, the October half term. It was quite funny cos I got recognised a bit,' he explains. 'Mum's dad is from Wexford, then he moved to Mayo and my mum grew up in Mayo. I still have my cousins and aunt that live in Foxford. I've been going there since I was quite young, nearly every summer.' Toby confirms he's 'young, free and single' right now. 'I wouldn't say no to going a date with an Irish girl,' he smiles. But he draws the line at Maura Higgins. 'Yeah I am familiar with Maura. She's a nice girl, she's alright, not a bit of me though. There's nothing wrong with her but she's just not my type, we're just not compatible. 'The age gap wouldn't work — I'm not her type and she's not my type,' he insists. The 24-year-old student and real estate agent from Blanchardstown was in season 10 of Love Island in 2023, entering on day one before being dumped on Day 38. Earlier this year Catherine also featured on Love Island All Stars. During her time in the villa she bonded with Welsh goalkeeper Scott Van-Der-Sluis. 'He played for Shelbourne, he's a goalkeeper,' says Catherine, who now lives in London. 'We talked a lot about Dublin, I think that was what we bonded about, that he lived in Dublin and trained here. He only lived 10 minutes away from where I lived in Blanchardstown, so we did talk about Dublin a lot.' Catherine is also currently single and has a couple of celebrity crushes. 'Looks wise, I like Michael B Jordan, but personality wise I love the streamer called Kai (Cenat), he's the biggest streamer. 'He's so funny. I'd love someone I could just sit down with and laugh for hours,' she says. Toby also has his own personal favourites. '[American singers] Madison Beer and SZA,' he raves when asked about his dream date. Both stars giggle when asked about the possibility of them dating each other some time, given they live close to each other in the London area. 'We're going on holidays after this, maybe Miami, we haven't decided yet,' jokes Toby. Catherine is enjoying travelling and has a number of projects on the go. Catherine Agbaje and Toby Aromolaran launch Virgin Media Play: Get Play,Your Way News in 90 Seconds - 09 June 2025 She would like to follow in the footsteps of fellow Dublin Islander Yewande Bialado and take part in Dancing With The Stars. 'I'd love to do it. I'd be open to it, as it would be a challenge, like Yewande did,' she said. 'I didn't know Yewande beforehand. I think we have some mutual friends, but I didn't know here personally. I watched the show.' Catherine and Toby have their own bits of advice for the new batch going into the 12th series of Love Island tomorrow.. 'My tip is be yourself, go for what you want, stand your ground,' she says. Toby adds: 'Just enjoy the process and let yourself enjoy the experience, because there's only limited time you're going to be in that village, so enjoy it while it lasts — connect to people, just let go, don't be uptight.'
