Baby name experts list six 'outdated' names new parents should steer clear of

Choosing a name for your newborn can be a tricky and daunting task, but two baby name consultants have shared six old-fashioned names that new parents might want to avoid.
British professional baby namer SJ Strum and Boston-based consultant Colleen Slagen have compiled a list of names they recommend to clients, but there are a select few they suggest bypassing.
Colleen advises against sturdy, old-school monikers like Linda, Karen, and Janet, which she believes are falling out of fashion, while SJ warns parents off what she terms "1990s norm-core dad names" such as Gary, Stuart, and Ian.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, SJ described pregnancy as "such a bamboozling time. She added that picking a name is just one of the overwhelming number of decisions expectant parents face, reports the Mirror.
She believes that enlisting an expert to choose a baby's name can transform the process into "one of the most joyous and bonding parts of your pregnancy."
"Couples want a name that tells their story," she says, delving into personal details such as hobbies, university studies, and where they first met to find the perfect fit.
SJ also mentioned receiving last-minute messages from delivery rooms, with parents desperate for help naming their newborn.
She offers sage advice for resolving deadlocks when one parent is fixated on a name the other detests.
SJ offers a cheeky tip for those stuck with a partner's preferred boys' name they can't stand: "That normally gets them off it pretty quick," she reveals, suggesting you claim it's the name of an ex.
For parents-to-be mulling over names for their little girl, SJ recommends timeless options like Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, or Sofia, while James, Henry, Lucas, or William are equally classic choices for boys.
SJ also highlights some novel trends in baby naming, noting: "'Nature names are becoming popular: River is rising up the ranks. I'm also seeing a lot of whimsical names that hark back to virtues, such as Sage."
She observes that following the passing of celebrities or notable figures, there's often a spike in the popularity of their names, adding: "We saw lots of variations on Elizabeth after the late Queen passed away, and Bowie after David died in 2016."
Before finalising a name, SJ advises giving it a test run: "What does it feel like to say it out loud?".
Sharing her own experience, SJ points out practical aspects to consider: "Will you be asked to spell it in a coffee shop?
"I had a client who loved the name Persephone, but did the coffee shop test and decided it was far too much of a mouthful".

Bono's son Elijah Hewson says it 'shouldn't be controversial' to stand up for children in Gaza

More info Bono's son Elijah Hewson has said "it shouldn't be controversial" to stand up for the rights of children "being bombed" in Gaza. The second youngest son of the U2 rock star and his wife Ali Hewson was performing with his band Inhaler at St Anne's Park on Friday night. Speaking to the crowd, Eli said: "It shouldn't be controversial to stand up for the rights of kids that are being bombed in Gaza. "We stand with the people of Palestine tonight. Any kids that are being murdered for the sake of any ideology is wrong." Crowds cheered as the band then continued to perform. It comes in the wake of Belfast rappers Kneecap's advocacy for Palestine came under intense scrutiny after they used a performance at the Coachella festival in California last month to denounce Israeli attacks on Gaza. A video emerged from a November 2023 gig appearing to show one of the trio saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory." Last month, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, 27, was charged by the Metropolitan Police after the incident on 21 November 2024 at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London. Mr Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 18 June. In a statement posted on social media, Kneecap previously said: "We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves. "This is political policing. This is a carnival of distraction. 14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us." Podcast reviews: It's the season for sight, taste and smell, and these listens should whet your appetite

Festival organisers are now dusting off marquees and portable show kitchens, ahead of the four-day Taste of Dublin opening on Thursday in Merrion Square. Sharon Noonan of Best Possible Taste (Apple Spotify) recently talked shop with the event's marketing pro Nina Massey to discuss how Taste of Dublin has changed over 20 years, reflecting Ireland's ever-changing palate. And Noonan sure knows her onions: Best Possible Taste is Ireland's longest running food and drinks audio show, premiering on West Limerick 102FM in 2013. Its USP is interview with food and drinks producers and purveyors across the island, such as recent guests Eunice Power (Waterford chef and firebrand), Kian Louet-Feisser (successor of the family-run Carlingford Oyster Company) and Max Jones (West Cork-based traditional food conservationist and polymath). Chef Neven Maguire said of Noonan on the 10th anniversary of the series: 'Putting producers' names out there on a podcast like Sharon's and allowing them to share their stories is truly powerful and inspiring.' Smell is the most sneakiest of senses, triggering a long-forgotten memory without word or warning. Freshly baked bread, cut grass and the seaside commonly top lists of our favourite scents, but fragrance is so much more personalised when it comes to nostalgic recall. Smell Ya Later (Apple Spotify) is bright and breezy, but don't be fooled by each episode's introductory smalltalk – once co-hosts Sable Yong and Tynan Sinks get going (and, boy, do they take their sweet time), they take their subject seriously, chatting with the likes of Marie du Petit Thouars and Matt Bergson, founders of Maison Louis Marie, as well as hearing how AI is being applied in the fragrance world, learning from Christophe Laudamiel of Google spin-off Osmo. You don't have to even visit London's National Gallery to be enthralled by its new podcast Stories in Colour (Apple Spotify), which journeys through the trends and tech that have coloured our world. It's hosted by the NG's Beks Leary who chats with historians, curators, scientists and artists to discuss how humanity has harnessed and made sense of colour, such as the discovery of Prussian blue, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's deadly Yellow Wallpaper. The series kicks off vividly with Professor Anya Hurlbert exploring visual perception, such as 2015's viral dress debate (blue and black, or white and gold?).
