Mountain rescuers out of action 'for weeks' after theft
Mountain rescuers have been put out of action for at least a "couple of weeks" after their equipment was stolen.Volunteer rescuers from the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team (NOTMRT) and Wales' Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO) had travelled to Middlesbrough at the weekend to deliver training to the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team.But when they returned to their vehicles at their accommodation, they found their equipment had been stolen.Mark Silmon, chair of NOTMRT said it was "really sad" and "extremely disappointing" that more than £1,500 worth of his rescue team gear was missing and that his van had been damaged.
"What happened is unpleasant, unnecessary," he said."We're all volunteers, we give up our time for free."Specialist equipment, including helmets and climbing gear, was stolen from the two trainers' vehicles.
Mr Silmon said he expected himself and the other trainer to be "off the hill for at least a couple of weeks"."I can't just go out and spend £1,500 on equipment that wasn't planned for," he said.He said other rescuers had offered to lend him equipment, and he was working with his insurance company to replace the gear.Team leader for the Cleveland Mountain Rescue team Tim Wood said the situation was "massively frustrating"."It reduces their availability and ability to respond to call-outs," he said."We're talking hundreds of pounds, and that's gone."Mr Wood asked people to "think twice" if they were offered the stolen equipment.Cleveland Police said it received reports two vehicles in the car park of the Premier Inn on Marton Way in Middlesbrough had been broken into on Saturday evening.A spokesperson added that an investigation was under way.

Influencer died after fall on 3,000ft Snowdonia peak
An influencer died after falling down a Snowdonia mountain, an inquest heard. Maria Rosanova Eftimova, 28, was hiking up 3,000-foot Tryfan when she slipped and fell 60ft to her death on Feb 22. Neil Oakes, who was among a group of about 18 on the peak when the party split in two, said he had been ahead of Miss Eftimova and turned around to check on his companions. He said in a statement: 'I turned around again and saw Maria tumbling through the air below me. I knew there was going to be an impact. I was shouting 'no, no, no'. When I turned back she had hit the ledge below.' Jed Stone, of Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team, said the accident happened on the north ridge of Tryfan, an area of steep rocky ground and many cliff faces. Miss Eftimova, a civil engineer who had lived in England since 2015 and studied at the University of Salford, died on the mountain. She had more than 10,000 followers on social media and was an experienced climber who had recently completed an ice-climbing course in Norway. Kate Robertson, senior coroner for north west Wales, said: 'Very sadly, it seems Maria was scrambling with others when she'd unintentionally and unexpectedly fallen. During the course of that fall, she sustained the injuries, which have sadly led to her death. That fall was entirely accidental.' Severe head injuries A conclusion of an accident was recorded. A pathologist had found multiple injuries including severe head injuries. Miss Eftimova's Bulgarian family were on a video link to the inquest. The coroner passed on her condolences to them and said: 'The way Mr Eftimov described Maria shows she was a very bright and conscientious individual.' In a statement, Rosen Eftimov, her father, said: 'We learnt about Maria's death from a telephone call from her friends with her at the time of the accident. 'Maria had climbed Tryfan several times on different routes.' Mr Eftimov said his daughter had been snowboarding, surfed, entered marathons and did yoga, pole dancing, and glacier climbing in Norway. Harry Jones, another witness to the tragedy, said about seven of the group on the peak had been going from ledge to ledge. Miss Eftimova was ahead of him and slipped as she pulled herself up. 'All I saw was her flying over the top of my head and down the mountainside,' he said. Mr Jones said he 'froze' but dialled 999. A rescue helicopter and mountain rescuers arrived at the scene. A fund-raising appeal was launched to support the family of Miss Eftimova. The appeal's organisers said: 'Maria was an ambitious, bright and cherished 28-year-old, whose vibrant personality, energy and aura touched and uplifted all around her. 'She had an insatiable thirst for life and exploring our world's beauty.'

Beloved gay adult entertainer Colton Ford has died at the age of 62 in a mysterious hiking trail accident, according to his friends. The star, whose real name was Glenn Soukesian, was found dead on Monday night on the Goat Trails in Palm Springs. His remains were discovered after police revived a report of a missing hiker hours before. Mystery surrounds the nature of the fatal accident, as police have yet to reveal any additional details. Hiker dies after Eryri mountain fall tragedy

More info A hiker has died after a fall from an Eryri (Snowdonia) mountain. The tragedy happened on Saturday, May 10 at Glyder Fach. A witness called mountain rescuers for help. An Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation statement said: "10 May - Glyder Fach. A solo scrambler was seen to fall down the main face of the mountain, the witnesses called for help and attempted to assist the casualty, but they had not survived the fall. "Team members were flown onto the hill by Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter, and the casualty was lowered and carried to a point they could be flown to base." The mountain rescue team also confirmed members witnesses a fatal road collision on the A5 near Capel Curig and helped at the scene, after attending Glyder Fach. A man died and a woman was left with serious injuries following the collision, which involved a red Honda motorcycle and a white Volkswagen Caddy van. The male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female pillion passenger was flown to hospital in Stoke with serious, potentially life-changing injuries. An OVMRO statement added, while returning from the Glyder Fach callout: "Team members witnessed a collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle near Capel Curig and stopped to give help. "The team leader phoned 999 to report it and the team was asked to respond, team members worked with @welshambulanceservice, @heddlugogleddcymru, @air_ambulance to treat the rider and their passenger, sadly, the rider did not survive and the passenger was flown to hospital. The thoughts of all involved are with the families and friends of the casualties."
