Liverpool stadium announcer Sephton, 'The Voice of Anfield', to step down
George Sephton, Liverpool's stadium announcer whose voice has echoed around Anfield for over five decades, will step down at the end of the season, the Premier League club said on Friday.
Sephton, 79, took the job in 1971 when Bill Shankly was manager of the team and soon became known as "The Voice of Anfield".
"I've been privileged to have a front-row seat at some of the greatest occasions in football history – memories I will cherish forever," Sephton said in a club statement.
"Anfield has been my second home for over 50 years and I've loved every moment. But the time is right to pass the microphone on."
Sephton will leave after Liverpool's final game of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday, when he will see the team lift the league trophy for a 13th time since he took his seat in the gantry.
"George Sephton is more than just a stadium announcer – he is a part of the fabric of Anfield," said Paul Cuttill, Liverpool's vice-president of stadium operations. REUTERS

South Africa beat Australia by five wickets to win World Test Championship
Cricket - 2025 ICC World Test Championship Final - South Africa v Australia - Lord's Cricket Ground, London, Britain - June 14, 2025 South Africa's Aiden Markram raises his bat to acknowledge the crowd and walks back to the Lord's Pavilion after losing his wicket, caught out by Australia's Travis Head off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers REUTERS LONDON - South Africa won the World Test Championship on Saturday, completing a remarkable turnaround to beat Australia by five wickets as they successfully chased down an imposing 282-run target. But it was an edgy finish as they took 27.4 overs to slowly score the 69 runs needed to secure success on the fourth day at Lord's after resuming at 213-2 overnight. In so doing, they completed a successful pursuit of the joint second-highest winning fourth-innings total in test history at the London venue. It was a first major cricket triumph for South Africa, who had earned an unwanted reputation for failure when on the cusp of victory over the last decades in limited overs competitions. Lionel Messi magic needed for Inter Miami as injuries pile up
– Inter Miami will have to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's firepower as they prepare for their Club World Cup opener against Al Ahly on June 14 (June 15, Singapore time), with coach Javier Mascherano forced to reshuffle his backline owing to a string of injuries. Fullback Jordi Alba, fellow defender Gonzalo Lujan and defensive midfielder Yannick Bright have all been ruled out of the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium. 'They are not available for this game, hopefully they will be for the second game,' Mascherano told a press conference on June 13. Alba, one of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, is sidelined with a hamstring issue. There were also concerns regarding the fitness of centre back David Martinez. 'David had some kind of pain yesterday and we did not want to take any risks,' added Mascherano. 'Obviously we would have loved to have everyone fit for this game and have our full roster, that would allow us to be stronger... The reality is that throughout the season, the team have dealt with injuries, but the players who stepped in rose to the challenge. That gives us peace of mind.' Miami have conceded 16 goals in their last six competitive games and much of their chances rest on Messi's shoulders. 'He's in good shape this season. There were moments when we had to give him some time to rest, but he's played the last 15 games, except for the match against Dallas when we rested the entire squad,' said Argentinian Mascherano. 'We were also fortunate he was able to rest during Argentina's last two games,' he added, referring to Messi playing 111 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia earlier in June. 'It's our responsibility to create the right environment for him to shine.' Miami will also take on Porto and Palmeiras in the 32-club event. Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro, who took charge in May following the departure of Marcel Koller, believes Messi still has what it takes to shine despite being 37. 'He is a player who can turn the game around at every moment. He's a player you cannot forget at any moment,' he told a press conference. 'His skill has always been his vision of the game and that has not changed. He is not a coach but he guides the players around him, he's surrounded with young talent.' Al Ahly have won four of the last six African Champions League titles. REUTERS, AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Manchester City spends big to cash in on Club World Cup
Manchester City's Rayan Cherki and Nathan Ake during a training session ahead of the Club World Cup. Cherki, who transferred to from Lyon to City for a reported €36.5 million, is one of the new signings for the club. REUTERS Can there be too much football? The inaugural Fifa Club World Cup, kicking off this weekend, puts that question into practice. A long English Premier League season saw many teams crawl over the line, in desperate need of a summer's rest. That included Manchester City, the fallen champions, who needed a final-day win at Fulham to qualify for the Champions League. While Liverpool, Napoli and Barcelona, champions of England, Italy and Spain, are absent from the tourney in the United States, Manchester City take their place. Pep Guardiola, like Paris Saint-Germain coach and former teammate Luis Enrique, has been notable about his ambitions to win the new trophy.
