Ravinder reviews summer preparedness at Asha Homes
New Delhi: Social Welfare, SC/ST Welfare, Elections, and Cooperation Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh conducted a review meeting on Tuesday with officials from the Social Welfare Department and Public Works Department (PWD) to assess summer preparedness at Asha Homes in Delhi, which provides care for mentally disabled individuals.
The meeting focused on key arrangements under the Summer Action Plan, including heat protection, food provisions, healthcare services, and other essential amenities. Singh visited Asha Homes located in Rohini, Narela, Hari Nagar, and Timarpur to inspect the availability of air conditioners, desert coolers, room coolers, fans, and systems for cool and purified drinking water such as water coolers and RO units.He also reviewed sanitation and healthcare facilities and issued directions to ensure their proper maintenance.
Singh emphasised that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has issued strict instructions to avoid any negligence regarding the upkeep and services at Asha Homes. Continuous monitoring of heat protection, food supply, healthcare, and other basic facilities was stressed during the meeting.
The minister instructed officials to implement all necessary measures to shield residents from extreme heat. In addition to physical infrastructure, he recommended including fresh salads, curd, and lemon water in meals to suit the summer season. Officials also provided updates on structural maintenance, the construction of shade structures, and the use of water sprinkling to mitigate heat impact.

Ludhiana: 2 more test +ve for Covid; tally 18
With two new cases surfacing on Friday, the Covid tally has climbed to 18 in the district. A 22-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were tested positive on Friday. While the man is reported to be asymptomatic, the woman has been reported to be mildly symptomatic. At present, there are 13 active cases in the district as three have recovered and two persons have died of the infection. Both deaths include co-morbid patients. The first death was reported last Wednesday. The 40-year-old man was suffering from a lung ailment before contracting Covid. The latest death was reported on Wednesday which was of a 59-year-old woman suffering from typhoid for the last five months. She was also reportedly obese, according to health officials. Both deceased were admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh. Besides the woman found positive on Friday, all other active cases, as per health officials, are asymptomatic. According to a senior local health official, requesting anonymity, apart from an 18-year-old, all other cases include people who have already been vaccinated for Covid. The department advised the public to continue using masks in crowded areas and consult the doctor if they have any flu-like symptoms. Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh, who was in the district to hold a meeting of health officials and a few NGOs, said there was no reason to worry. 'The situation is normal. Punjab is fully equipped to tackle any situation,' he said. The minister also advised immune compromised individuals, such as pregnant women, elderly and those with conditions like kidney disease, high BP, cancer or respiratory issues to wear masks when stepping outside as a precautionary measure. He underscored the importance of vigilance while affirming the state's preparedness to handle any health challenges. De-addiction-cum-skill centre to come up in Mullanpur Ludhiana: Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh here on Friday that a centre of excellence for drug de-addiction and skill development was being established in Mullanpur here in collaboration with NGOs. Holding a meeting with members of over 35 NGOs, Dr Balbir Singh said that apart from saving the addicts from drug abuse, the centre would also help them in developing skills which would allow them to have a better livelihood. He said the aim of holding a meeting with the NGOs was to improve coordination and to get feedback from the members. Dr Singh stated that the centre in Mullanpur is being established in collaboration with Helpful NGO and a number of other NGOs have also stepped forward. Civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur among other officials of the health department were also present in the meeting. The minster also stressed upon 'Har Shukarwar Dengue Te Vaar' campaign wherein residents are being sensitised regarding cleaning and drying desert coolers, flowerpots, water containers, fridge trays, tank water and water storage containers, etc., every Friday to prevent mosquito breeding. The minister highlighted the state-wide efforts under the campaign, noting that 20,000 ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are actively inspecting homes across Punjab every Friday.

Rs 5,000 as aid to those caring for differently abled likely soon in Delhi
A financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to caretakers and attendants of people suffering from over 80% or above disability is likely to be provided soon by the Delhi government in a first-of-its-kind initiative, officials have said. 'This is going to be the first such scheme in the Capital where the caretakers will also receive financial assistance from the government…,' Delhi Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh said. 'A proposal has been prepared in this regard, and it was already discussed in the Cabinet meeting once… Some changes are being made. Once it is ready, the proposal will be presented before the Cabinet again for approval and further implementation,' he added. The Capital, the Minister said, has 1,000 such families with people having 80% or above disability, and who are completely dependent on their family members and others. For an accurate figure, however, the department is also planning to conduct a survey so that only those eligible can avail the benefits under the proposed scheme. 'This is a first-of-its-kind proposal not only in Delhi but across the country,' a senior official said. The Social Welfare Department's existing pension scheme provides persons with over 40% disability a monthly aid of Rs 2,500. As per official data, about 1.5 lakh specially-abled people are availing this pension scheme. However, no assistance is provided to their caregivers. 'The aim behind this scheme is to ensure that there is no negligence in the care of such persons with disabilities, especially those from economically weaker sections. Also, the attendants receive some financial support… because well-to-do families have separate nurses or caretakers to take care of such persons…But the case is different in poor families, so this scheme will help them financially,' the senior official added. Officials said the caretakers can be parents, siblings, or anyone who is taking care of the differently abled. Meanwhile, on Friday, the Social Welfare Minister also inspected the under-construction building for mentally challenged individuals in Narela on Friday. Once completed, individuals currently residing in overcrowded shelter homes like Asha Kiran Home in Rohini will be relocated here. The building, located within the Nursing College Hostel premises and the Primary Urban Health Centre campus in Narela, will accommodate 220 differently abled residents. This facility is expected to be operational within three months. The Minister directed the officials to ensure the building is wheelchair-friendly and there is no encroachment around the premises, so that ambulance movement does not face any obstruction. Indraj also said that multiple facilities are being developed across the city for differently abled people. Once the facilities in Mamurpur and Dallupura are completed, they will significantly improve access to services, safety, and healthcare for the differently abled, he added.

Caregiver support scheme likely for those with benchmark disabilities
New Delhi: To help persons with benchmark disabilities having serious mobility issues, Delhi govt is working on a proposal to provide them with financial assistance to avail themselves of the services of caregivers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Delhi social welfare minister Ravindra Indraj Singh told TOI that his department was working on a scheme and would soon bring a proposal before the council of ministers for its approval. "The project was discussed in the cabinet once. We will finalise the proposal soon and place it before the council of ministers again for approval," Singh said. The minister added the kin of persons with a benchmark disability of 80% or more would be provided with financial assistance, benefitting nearly 1,000 families. The department will soon conduct a survey on the number of people who will get the aid. Though the exact amount of the aid was yet to be finalised, the minister said, it could be around Rs 5,000. Delhi govt currently provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 to the disabled, but this amount is often too little for people from disadvantaged sections. Persons with benchmark disabilities are those who have not less than 40% of a specified disability, as per the disability certificate or the UDID card. There are 21 disabilities categorised, including locomotor disability, intellectual disability, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, among others.
