Dear Rachel,
My partner and I have been together for nearly five years and we moved in together about 18 months ago. We have enjoyed some good times, and our sex life would probably be considered 'normal', whatever that means. However, since we have been living together, she has started to limit the amount of sex she allows me, where physical contact is regulated and directly proportional to the gifts and lifestyle I afford her.
I recently bought her an electric car and, once promised, I noticed that she cut back drastically on what we normally enjoyed, until it stopped altogether. Once she had the keys in her hand, she 'rewarded' me with sex. It has reached the point where she no longer makes excuses, she just openly asks for gifts and then begins to tease and deny me until she gets what she wants.
I have spoken to her about the matter, but she treats it as some sort of game, rather than considering it a 'problem' as such. She told me that every relationship needs a spark to keep it alive, and that I need to work hard to keep her and maintain what we enjoy – and not assume it will always be the same if I stop trying or paying her attention.
Parts of her argument make sense and I find myself complying, but a close friend has advised me to walk away as I am being used. Can you give me an impartial opinion please?
– Anon
Dear Anon,
What an interesting letter, touching on so many under-explored aspects of male-female relations, from Pretty Woman (rich, older white knight in the gorge shape of Richard Gere saves lady of the night) to Indecent Proposal (gorge billionaire Robert Redford tries and eventually succeeds to bag a night with Woody Harrelson's wife for a million dollars), and so many more. These movies play on the latent transactional basis of so many relationships. Women trade their dewy youth and loamy beauty for power, status, security and money. One of my favourite jokes around the commercial (as opposed to emotional) exchange that underpins so many of these asymmetric relationships goes, 'Today's maths problem: if Sadie is 28 and Sam is 72, how much money does Sam have?'
There is no doubt that women have always had to use sex and their physical allure simply in order to survive, and that exchange continues to this day. Their looks – and therefore their youth – could be their only capital, as the saying 'your face is your fortune, my pretty maid' reminds us. I have often observed that extremely wealthy men are not… lookers. They're often toad-like, spectrumy oddballs (like Elon Musk) and yet they have no obvious problem attracting a series of identical trophy wives to separate them from half their worldly goods when the marriage fails and they are on the hunt for a younger replacement.
Which brings us to you and your girlfriend. I have to say – as someone who hates asking for anything, and has never asked for money or presents even once in my whole life – I find her attitude foreign, unfeminist and freakish, but not completely unfathomable. She appears to regard going to bed with you like a sex worker turning a trick, and no wonder you find it objectionable. It's humiliating and expensive, and also, she doesn't appear to know you well enough to understand, or to try to care, why you might be so offended by her nakedly mercantile attitude to what should be a free and generous exchange of tender intimacies, complete with murmured endearments. She is not interested in sweet nothings and providing the girlfriend experience; she's turning your sex life into a bizarre game in which she holds all the cards, doling out sex like Good Boy Choc Drops as a reward for when you've done what she wants, which is buy her stuff.
Most people, I think, will share my dusty attitude to this, but the therapist Sophie Laybourne (find her at eastlondontherapy.co.uk) points out that there may be some method to this apparent madness.
'Is this naked exploitation or a way of keeping things sexy?' she wonders. 'As much as it's tempting to disapprove, she won't be the first woman who gets turned on by being bought things. And some men, believe it or not, get turned on by doing the buying.'
Here we go then.
'I've treated ' sugar daddies ' who hook up with Instagram models via dedicated agencies – 'daddies' are means-tested before they're allowed on the books – and they like nothing better than to pick up the bills. Sometimes they don't even want sex,' Laybourne tells me, explaining they get pleasure from spending money on someone.
'Obviously this antediluvian relational-sexual scenario is not one likely to thrill feminists. But as we've noted before in this column, what turns people on is remarkably hard to legislate for,' says Laybourne. She points out that even in 2025 women get turned on by money and power – she reminds me of a wife who would shut up shop until her husband pulled off a megabucks deal worth millions – and it's still standard for men to pick up the bill on a first date.
Laybourne says even avowed feminists get the ick if the man doesn't pick up the bill on a first – or perhaps any – date (again, I think that's old-fashioned). 'I had a boyfriend who split every bill, no matter how tiny, and it was a totalturn off and deal-breaker,' Laybourne continues. My impartial opinion and Laybourne's professional one meet somewhere here. You lost me, to be honest, at 'I recently bought her an electric car.' If you break down your sex life with your girlfriend, it is based on a barter economy whereby you expend large sums of cash for access to her body. Most relationships involve a bit of give and take but not quite as baldly as your arrangement.
'It doesn't sound like your reader is turned on by this, so he and his girlfriend are not a good fit,' Laybourne concludes.
I agree. Oh, and I asked a couple of blokes at random what they thought of your letter and they were both horrified. 'Ditch her and move on,' said one. 'A lot of women are doing that and not making it explicit,' said the other, in a more nuanced reaction.
One final thought before you do 'ditch her', though. Do you think there is a faint chance that your girlfriend does find this transactional arrangement 'hot' and is dangling sex in exchange for presents as a way of upping the ante when it comes to your bedroom activity? You say your sex life is ''normal', whatever that means'. Maybe you should entertain the possibility that your materialistic and acquisitive partner is trying 'to elevate' – as Meghan Markle might say as she sprinkles flower petals onto plain old scrambled eggs – your sex life into something more interesting and appetising. Eliminate that remote possibility before you give her the order of the boot.

Meghan and Harry part company with SIX more staff after hiring firm behind Duchess's infamous twerking video to boost their profile

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have parted ways with six more members of their team as their PR machine undergoes another dramatic shake-up just weeks after enlisting the agency behind the Duchess's cringe-worthy twerking video. The latest departures from Team Sussex include Kyle Boulia, their Los Angeles-based deputy press secretary, and Charlie Gipson, who had been serving as the couple's European communications director. Lianne Cashin, formerly head of operations at their Archewell Foundation, has also exited - just a month after a spokesperson described her as 'exceptional' and said she embodied the 'strength and vision' of the Duke and Duchess. They're not alone. Deesha Tank, Archewell's director of communications, a personal assistant, and Meghan's social media manager have all reportedly gone too. The mass exodus comes in the wake of Prince Harry's eyebrow-raising BBC interview, where he launched a fresh attack on his father King Charles and complained of an 'establishment stitch-up' after losing his legal battle over taxpayer-funded police protection in the UK. Sources say the interview didn't go down well behind Palace gates. But insiders claim the writing was already on the wall for some team members following January's damning Vanity Fair exposé, which alleged that several staffers were left needing 'long-term therapy' or took extended breaks after working with Meghan. Prince Harry, meanwhile, was painted as a lonely figure who has failed to make friends across the pond. The social media manager is said to have departed before Meghan released her now-infamous 'twerking' video, which showed the royal couple dancing in a hospital delivery room while waiting for the birth of their daughter, Princess Lilibet. The clip, which dropped on the Duchess's Instagram earlier this month, caused a stir online - with viewers torn between laughter and disbelief. The couple have since hired Method Communications, a slick US-based PR firm, in an effort to revamp their public image - a move widely seen as a sign they were unhappy with their previous media strategy. Joining their rapidly expanding comms empire is Emily Robinson, a former Netflix publicity director who worked on hit shows like The Crown. Meghan has also brought on Sarah Fosmo, who previously worked for Bill Gates, as her first chief of staff, while Harry has promoted long-time aide Miranda Barbot to the same role on his side. Overseeing the overhaul is Meredith Maines, appointed in February as the couple's first-ever chief communications officer. She confirmed the exit of Mr Boulia and Mr Gipson after barely a year in post, saying: 'As the Duke and Duchess's business and philanthropic interests grow, I have made the strategic decision to move toward a more traditional communications structure of specialist agency support. 'Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access, and critically, faster response times to enquiries.' The Duchess, meanwhile, is focusing on growing her As Ever lifestyle brand, although her messaging has appeared inconsistent in recent weeks. She told Fast Company magazine that she wasn't planning to launch new products until early 2026, saying on her podcast she was pressing 'pause' until the business was 'completely stable'. But in a surprise move, she took to Instagram days later to tease that fans' 'favourite' items would be returning this month - along with 'a few new things' she 'can't wait to show off.'

Two-bedroom house goes on sale for £240k with the most 'bizarre' bathroom feature ever

A two-bedroom house has gone on sale for £240,000 - but potential buyers may be puzzled when they enter the bathroom. The property in Levenshulme, Manchester is situated in a quiet area with great transport links to the city centre. And at £240,000 the property situated at the end of a row of terraced houses is a well-priced prospect for potential buyers. However the only bathroom in the home does feature some unusual decor which may leave some to look elsewhere. The bathroom floor is decorated with a children's road map, similar to those seen on rugs usually aimed at those aged three and older. The home was posted on TikTok by @HousingHorrors who noticed the peculiar design in the otherwise unassuming house. He said: 'This house has the most bizarre bathroom carpet I have ever seen. 'It is so weird because you go through the property and everything looks pretty standard. Walls are painted white, grey carpet. 'But wait until you see this bathroom because everything is so boring and beige and then bang they have got this massive kind of roundabout roadworks carpet. This is so nostalgic. 'I am pretty sure they used to have these carpets in primary school but why would you want it in your bathroom. 'I mean fair play to them it is a little bit cool, a little bit quirky. I have never seen anything quite like it but it just feels a little bit out of place. 'But do you know what it is probably the most interesting room in the house because every other room in this house is very beige very boring. I would love to know the reasoning behind them having this. After originally believing the flooring was carpet, The social media personality eventually worked out the flooring was Vinyl. Referring to the popular children's play mats, he added: 'I remember these used to be carpeted.' In conclusion, the TikToker suggested the size and location of the house made it an attractive proposition for buyers, despite the bizarre floor design. 'This is very very unusual. It is so weird because everywhere else in the house is so normal. To be fair, two-bed end of terrace property. For the area, £240k, a lot of people might say it is a little bit expensive but it is actually a relatively nice size for the area.' The listing for the property describes it as a 'fabulous plot' which has benefitted from a brand new modern kitchen. It says the period end terrace is located in one of South Manchester's most sought after locations. Levenshulme features a host of independent shops, cafes and businesses just a ten-minute walk away from the home. The nearby train station also takes passengers to Manchester Piccadilly in around eight minutes. The home comprises of an entrance hall leading to an open plan living room and dining room, which is described as a 'blank canvas ready to put your stamp on'. A brand new modern kitchen boasts a range of wall and base units with ample space for appliances and storage. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, with the main bedroom stretching the full width of the property. The family bathroom has a three piece suite and shower over the bath. Externally, the property also features a low maintenance yard access for off road parking if desired.

Former EastEnders star Anita Dobson ‘utterly thrilled' after being made OBE

Former EastEnders star Anita Dobson has said she is 'utterly thrilled' after being made an OBE. The 76-year old London-born actress, best known for playing Queen Vic landlady Angie Watts on the BBC soap, was recognised for services to charitable fundraising and philanthropy. Advertisement Dobson is a patron for several charities including Thames Hospice and Focus Foundation, which provides support for grassroots charities and local organisations. Speaking about the OBE, she told the PA news agency: 'I'm utterly thrilled and completely honoured and a bit bowled over and very excited. And all my friends have been texting and sending support. It's just been wonderful. It's very moving and I'm thrilled. 'It's not like a little one, where a few of people in the world know – everybody knows. And so it feels like you you're having a big hug. 'My face is so stretched you can't believe it. This is a very happy day and I just feel very lucky and people have just been texting in and being so supportive and so lovely. Advertisement 'I hope everybody that's got an honour from the honours list has the same thing happening to them, that lots of people are making them feel special. Because I sure am.' The actress is an ambassador for the Sick Children's Trust and a former president of Phab, a charity that helps children and adults with and without disabilities to feel independent and confident. Speaking about her motivation to get involved with charities, she said: 'I think it's really important to, particularly in my industry, to pass things on. To pass anything that you've learned along the way, or little hints you can give on to the next generation. Anita Dobson with her husband Brian May after he was made a knight bachelor in 2023 (Victoria Jones/PA) 'I've always felt like that you should help people. And there's a lot of people with nothing now, with no hope, no homes to live in, not much food, not much clothing. So if you've got a lot, then it doesn't hurt, does it, to give a bit of it away and share it and make people's lives a little bit better, really? Advertisement 'I sort of work on a very kind of basic level. I just think, if someone's in trouble, you help them. 'I had nothing when I was younger, and it's been the hard slog getting to anywheresville, and look where I am now. It's a good feeling to pass things on. 'I do lots of phoners where people ring in and they're in trouble and maybe you can't solve their problems, but you can sure as hell help them feel heard and that they matter, and that there is somebody in the world who has got the time to listen to them and maybe give them some advice that might point them in the right direction, or introduce them to somebody else who can help them in a better way than you can.' Dobson recently reprised her role as Angie for EastEnders' 40th anniversary, appearing in the Queen Vic as a ghost while her adopted daughter, Sharon Watts, played by Letitia Dean, was seen fighting for her life after an explosion in the pub. Advertisement The shock return won the series the scene of the year gong at the 2025 British Soap Awards. Anita Dobson with Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies (Ian West/PA) She also played mysterious character Mrs Flood in the long-running BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, having joined the series on Christmas Day 2023. During Ncuti Gatwa's second season as the Time Lord, it was revealed that Mrs Flood was a disguised incarnation of the Rani, a renegade Time Lady and villain. She added: 'I had a lovely message from Russell T Davis (Doctor Who Showrunner) this morning saying congratulations, which is lovely. We'll see what happens in the future, or whenever. Advertisement 'I just have had a lovely time working for them. It's been a real blast. Russell said to me, come and have some fun. And I did. I just had fun. It was a real gift of a job.' The actress is also known for her stage performances and in 2003 was nominated for the best actress Olivier Award for her role in Bryony Lavery's Frozen at the National Theatre Cottesloe. Dobson was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing with professional Robin Windsor in 2011, but was voted off after nine weeks. Born in 1949 in the east end of London, the actress has been married to Queen guitarist Sir Brian May since 2000.
