Texas County to Vote on Giving Musk's SpaceX Its Own City
The Texas launch site of Elon Musk's SpaceX could soon have its very own city.
Officials on Wednesday approved an election sought by the aerospace firm that would allow residents who live near its Starbase site—almost all of them employees—to carve out a new municipality in an unincorporated area of Cameron County near the U.S.-Mexico border.
If the May 3 vote is successful, the new city would share the Starbase name with the site, where the Musk-led SpaceX constructs and launches its colossal Starship rockets.
It would also likely be governed from within Musk's orbit.
The form of municipality that would be created, a Type C under Texas law, is led by a mayor and two commissioners. The only candidate for mayor, according to a petition, is SpaceX security manager Gunnar Milburn.
That December petition, signed by 70 residents, stated most of the roughly 500 people in the area, which includes 100 children, were SpaceX employees.
Musk first floated the idea of the city in 2021.
Construction began on the SpaceX launch site in 2014 and, according to the Associated Press, just 10 of the 250 lots of land within the proposed city limits don't belong to the company.
A Starbase municipality would mark a notable addition to Musk's rapidly expanding empire in Texas, where he has relocated several businesses and himself, citing the conservative state's light regulatory touch and limited taxes.
He moved the headquarters of carmaker Tesla, a publicly traded company where he's CEO, and his tunnel construction business Boring Co. to the Austin metro area in 2021. His social media company X followed in 2023.
Tesla's opened a sprawling, 10-million-square-foot Gigafactory to build Cybertrucks near Austin in 2022, where its headquarters is now located.
The Boring Co. also has its own small community of mobile homes, and a general store to serve its workers, but it is within incorporated lands.
The New York Times reported last year that Musk bought a sprawling Texas compound and helped purchase an adjoining property with plans to build a place for his no less than 11 children and two of their three mothers to live in close proximity.
Musk denied he owned or that he was building a compound in Austin, and also denied claims that he had offered his sperm to friends and acquaintances in a gesture that would see more mini-Musks.
Over 3,400 full-time SpaceX employees and contractors work at the Starbase site, according to a Cameron County study issued last year.
Space industry stakeholders have fretted in recent months about Musk's close relationship with President Donald Trump, who tapped the world's richest man to lead a federal spending task force, fearing that SpaceX could benefit from government contracts at the expense of competitors.
'People are concerned what's in place to stop it,' one industry lobbyist told Politico in November. 'You're talking about two of the most unpredictable people in the world getting together. It's not like chocolate and peanut butter, and you get a great combination. You're talking about world dominance here.'
There are already signs that Musk's companies more broadly stand to benefit from his role as Trump benefactor, surrogate and sycophant.
On Wednesday, Drop Site News reported that the federal government earmarked $400 million to purchase armored vehicles Tesla, according to a new State Department procurement data.

Cory Booker Responds To Ridiculous MAGA Republicans Accusations of Doing A 'Nazi Salute'
Source: Getty Images / Cory Booker / Elon Musk Cory Booker is shutting down claims he was out here throwing up a Nazi salute. MAGA Republicans and Elon Musk are losing their sh*t and doing their best to compare a moment where Cory Booker put his hand on his heart and waved goodbye to the crowd at the Democratic National Convention in California to when Musk clearly did a Nazi salute. Through a spokesperson, Booker shut down those ridiculous claims. 'Cory Booker was obviously just waving to the crowd. Anyone who claims his wave is the same as Elon Musk's gesture is operating in bad faith,' Maya Krishna-Rogers, spokesperson for Booker, said to Newsweek in a statement sent via email on Sunday. 'The differences between the two are obvious to anyone without an agenda.' Musk also doubled down on his acceptance of th use of the word 'retard' as an insult. 🤨 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 1, 2025 MAGA Republicans going hard trying to make something out of nothing about Cory Booker waving goodbye to the crowd, comes after Musk and Steve Bannon both were both accused doing nazi salutes during events. Musk was accused of doing a Nazi salute during Trump rally during his second inauguration following his unfortunate election win. Elon Musk has gone full mask off Nazi. He is actively promoting Nazism. Tesla is now a hate symbol. — James Jansson (@jamesjansson) January 20, 2025 Still despite Booker's statement and the video evidence, you can't tell these MAGA fools a damn thing as continue to take photos of other elected officials clearly waving bye, and using them as evidence of them doing Nazi salutes in order to vindicate the alleged ketamine abuser Elon Musk. 🤨 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 1, 2025 SMH. After Trump cuts, National Weather Service is hiring. What about Florida?
As an active hurricane season looms for Florida, the National Weather Service is hiring. The Trump administration, through billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has slashed workforces in multiple federal agencies including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which encompasses the NWS and the National Hurricane Center. With concerns rising over whether the stripped-down agencies will be enough to handle increasingly dangerous weather in the U.S., CNN has reported that the NWS has received permission to temporarily lift the hiring freeze and hire about 125 new meteorologists and specialists for its forecast offices around the country. The NWS is also hoping to continue hiring more people under a public safety exemption, CNN said. ➤ Weather alerts via text: Sign up to get updates about current storms and weather events by location As of June 3, any hiring is still in the planning stages. NWS spokesperson Erica Grow Cei told Newsweek that the agency is planning to hire additional staff members to "stabilize" the department to address people who took the voluntary early retirement option. In May, USA TODAY reported that the weather service was working to transfer meteorologists from well-staffed offices to fill 155 positions where they're needed. "Additionally, a targeted number of permanent, mission-critical field positions will soon be advertised under an exception to the department-wide hiring freeze to further stabilize front-line operations," Cei said. More than 550 of the 4,800 weather service employees have been dismissed, retired or accepted incentive offers to step down. Many of the country's 122 local weather service forecast offices, usually staffed 24 hours day, seven days a week, were left shorthanded with staff reductions from 20-40% and scrambling to cover staffing and maintain the usual quality and number of measurements. Several offices were forced to end or reduce weather balloon launches, which can reduce the agency's ability to predict weather, and CNN reported on May 2 that 30 NWS offices no longer had a lead meteorologist. NOAA, which studies Earth's atmosphere, oceans and climate, has also canceled events in a public awareness campaign on the importance of early preparation. 'This has never happened before. We've always been an agency that has provided 24/7 service to the American public,' Tom Fahy, legislative director for the National Weather Service Employees Organization, told ABC News. 'The risk is extremely high — if cuts like this continue to the National Weather Service, people will die.' The Trump administration laid off an estimated 650 NOAA employees in February in the name of cutting government spending, including two flight directors and an electronic engineer at NOAA's Office of Aircraft Operations, home of the NOAA Hurricane Hunters. That could affect the agency's ability to conduct the twice-daily flights necessary during a significant hurricane threat, according to former Hurricane Hunter and cofounder of Weather Underground Jeff Masters, especially if one or more becomes unavailable or sick. NOAA employees have been told to expect a further 50% reduction in its staff of almost 12,000. Hurricane season fears: Will federal cuts and state budget battle put Florida's hurricane readiness in peril? The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season began Sunday, June 1, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 30. However, storms can and do occur outside of those dates. AccuWeather is predicting the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season could bring: Named storms: 13 to 18 Hurricanes: 7-10 Major hurricanes: 3-5 Direct U.S. impacts: 3-6 NOAA is predicting a 60% chance of an above-normal season, a 30% chance of a near-normal season and a 10% chance for a below-normal season. Rocket Lab Successfully Launches Electron Rocket With Busy Year Ahead
Rocket Lab's Electron rocket continued its successful launch history this week by inserting the BlackSky Gen-3 satellite into a low-Earth-orbit target, 292 miles above the Earth. This is the seventh successful launch Electron has made this year, but the schedule is only going to accelerate from here. There are already a further 14 launches planned for the rest of 2025, with two more slated for 2026, and a further 10 within a 2025-2027 launch window. Rocket Lab has been developing its Electron rocket design for over a decade and has been successfully launching payloads for customers since the end of 2018. Although the industry has been dominated by larger rocket developers, like SpaceX, Rocket Lab has continually championed the smaller rocket industry. In April, it argued that there was a value in being able to control the orbital insertion angle, instead of just ride-sharing on someone else's payload in a larger rocket design, like a Falcon 9, or future Starship. Credit: Rocket Lab And Electron keeps proving the management right. Rocket Lab is ramping up its launch schedule to show it can be a responsive and prolific launch vehicle operator. The last Electron launch was a mere two weeks previously on May 17. It also managed three launches in March from the same launch site complex in Mahia, New Zealand. The BlackSky AI-surveillance satellite is the seventh of more than 20 planned launches this year. The launches are spread across a few different companies, mostly launching satellites into low Earth orbit. However, in 2025 alone it will also complete a joint mission with MIT to send an atmospheric probe to Venus and complete a contract for the U.S. Space Force to show its responsiveness to rapid launch requirements. Most of the upcoming launches will be from the same New Zealand-based launch complex, though a couple are slated to launch from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Virginia. Building on these successes, Rocket Lab plans to introduce its larger Neutron rocket before the end of 2025. It will have a payload up to 25 times that of Electron, and a reusable first stage, in a similar fashion to SpaceX's Falcon 9—though Falcon 9 can still carry substantially more cargo into orbit. This will represent Rocket Lab stepping into the medium payload space, one that the company feels will complement its existing small payload launch vehicle.
