Police confirm ages of youngest and oldest victims injured in Liverpool parade crash
A child of just nine-years-old was among those injured in the terrifying incident on Monday when a driver crashed into crowds at the Liverpool FC victory parade.
Merseyside Police have confirmed that the youngest victim, which took place on Water Street in the city centre, was only nine. The oldest person injured was 78.
It is understood that all those hurt are British citizens.
This new information emerged after police confirmed that the number of injured individuals had risen to 79. On Wednesday, the force stated that seven of these people remained in hospital, all in stable condition.
A 53-yea-old man from West Derby in Liverpool, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving while unfit through drugs, continues to be held in police custody, reports the Liverpool Echo.
On Wednesday, the investigation team were granted additional time to continue questioning the suspect in police custody, a process that is ongoing today.
The police have also addressed further queries about the roadblocks and diversions that were in place near the scene of the incident on Monday. This includes Dale Street, which the ECHO revealed was the route taken by the Ford Galaxy Car before it turned onto Water Street and crashed into the crowd.
The police confirmed a partial closure of an area of Dale Street between North John Street and Exchange Street East. They stated that traffic was directed down the latter road to prevent any vehicles from entering Water Street.
It was previously disclosed that the driver of the Ford Galaxy followed closely behind an ambulance, which was en route to Water Street to attend to a person suffering a suspected heart attack, before the driver ploughed into dozens of people.
It's understood that the barrier used to prevent vehicles from accessing Water Street was a flatbed lorry and traffic cones. Questions remain about how the Galaxy managed to bypass potentially several roadblocks on its journey to Water Street.
On Wednesday, the ECHO secured a variety of CCTV footage showing the car travelling along Dale Street from its starting point near the Queensway Tunnels before progressing along the bustling route towards Water Street.
Business proprietors in Dale Street expressed their shock and surprise that the majority of Dale Street had stayed open when hundreds of thousands of people were pouring into the city centre, but council officials stated this was necessary as the street houses hotels and flats that need access for guests and residents.
Officials also noted that Dale Street serves Victoria Street, which in turn serves the Mersey Tunnels.
