Puppy Socialization Is The Secret To Puppy Training

Forbes21-03-2025

National Puppy Day is March 23, and there's no better way to celebrate than with fun puppy socialization activities.
Puppy socialization involves exposing puppies to many different sights, sounds, smells and experiences in a positive way during their first three to four months of life, according to Amanda Farah, national training and behavior coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society, an animal welfare nonprofit that operates America's largest no-kill animal sanctuary.
'It's a developmental period where they are most likely to benefit from exposure to a wide variety of things,' she says. 'It's setting up how they'll feel about new things for their entire life, which is why it's so important.'
The idea is to prevent puppies from developing fear that leads to reactive behavior, like barking, lunging or biting. For instance, a dog who fears other dogs might try to attack them on neighborhood walks.
That's where puppy socialization classes — aka puppy parties — come in. Farah recommends finding a 'well-run' class where a trainer introduces them in a way that isn't scary.
'If your puppy is hiding under a chair, they're not being forced out,' she says. 'Once the puppies get in there and they're all playing together, it's super cute. They're learning to wrestle. Dogs in general are the best teachers of each other. They teach each other things that we can't teach them. They know we're not dogs. So having puppies be able to teach each other in a group like that is really great.'
While veterinarians used to counsel clients to isolate their puppies from other dogs until their second round of puppy vaccinations, The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends puppy socialization start after their first round of shots — and before the second set — because it's so critically important. Without socialization, puppies can develop unwanted behaviors that make dog training more difficult – and can lead to them being relinquished to animal shelters.
So with an eye to health precautions, puppy socialization parties are a safer choice than dog parks or off-leash dog beaches, which should be avoided, according to Farah. (As she quipped: 'You're not throwing them into a big pile of unknown, potentially unvaccinated dogs.')
After their first round of puppy shots, she's also a fan of taking puppies out into the world to meet a variety of people, such as outdoor malls or big box stores like Home Depot.
'The main point is to be able to predict what your puppy will be around,' she says. 'We want to give them lots of new experiences introduced in a gentle, controlled way.'
This can include body handling (including paws, gums and ears), novel sounds like sirens, music, doorbells, laughter, crying and cheering), walking on different surfaces (such as grass, pavement, sand, tile, tin foil, dirt, carpet and hardwood) and meeting all kinds of people and pets.
Many dog trainers provide puppy socialization checklists, or you can brainstorm one of your own (try it with other family members, dog lovers or roommates) that could include:
'We do lots of fun games with the puppies where we're just doing really crazy things around them so that when they go out into the world, if they see someone doing something odd, it doesn't scare them,' Farah says. 'Think about all the things an adult dog might be confronted with.'
Ultimately, the time you spend socializing your puppy will benefit them for the rest of their life — but don't despair if you adopt a dog after their puppy socialization window, according to Farah.
'I can't emphasize enough the importance of socialization, but also if you're missed those first 14-16 weeks with your puppy, I do want to emphasize that all is not lost,' she says. 'You can still do lots of things with your puppy to help open them up to new experiences. You might have to go a little more slowly if some fears have started to form, but I don't want people to think that if they don't have the puppy by the time they're three months old, that they're going to miss out.'
While puppies take a lot of work, she feels they're worth the effort.
'Puppies are absolutely fantastic,' she says. 'I always tell my clients that the first few months are following them around and helping them make good choices, just like you do with a child. So it's very rewarding.'

2 cars slam into Home Depot store in Niles, Illinois

Two cars plowed into a Home Depot store in the north Chicago suburb of Niles Monday afternoon. The crash happened at the Home Depot on Civic Center Drive, near the southeast corner of Oakton Street and Waukegan Road. One of the cars crashed directly into the Home Depot building and caused damage. The other hit a protective cage where propane cylinders are located. Due to the involvement of the propane cylinders, hazardous materials crews were called and the Home Depot building was evacuated. All nonessential personnel were directed to the parking lot. There was no immediate word on injuries or the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Orland Park mental health event organizer: ‘I needed to do something positive'

The trying times Josette Songco and her two sons went through years ago taught them the importance of bringing more attention to mental health. The Songco family came out to volunteer Saturday at the Be Kind to Your Mind Mental Health/Wellness Fair and Walk to let other people know there is help out there for depression and other forms of mental illness. The event at Centennial Park in Orland Park was held the last day of Mental Health Awareness Month. The family helped put together bird feeder kits and planters donated by Home Depot and do face painting for attendees. The three received emotional support from Michelle Maxia, who organized the event and who runs Toy Box Connection in Orland Park, a charity that donates toys and used books, clothes, food and furniture to shelters, nursing homes, veterans' children and other with people in need. They remembered being volunteer gift-wrappers for the nonprofit at Orland Square mall years ago on a Christmas eve, when they had no place to go. 'We ran into some tough times,' said Songco. 'This set up a tradition for us.' She said Maxia taught them there are always a lot of people here with less. A main attraction was a 2K Drop the Rock walk, a meditative stroll where walkers picked up a rock that represented their problems, found 'positive affirmations' as they walked and then dropped the rock at the end, letting go of their distress. There were 30 mental health/wellness vendors, including Personal Balance Counseling and Aligned Modern Health, two sponsors both from Orland Park. Uniquely You Behavioral Health, and the Orland Fire Protection District also participated. There were food trucks, a bounce house, teen obstacle course, games, arts and a craft tent. Maxia, who lives in Orland Park, said she hoped the first-time event caught on. 'We decided to give something a little different back to the community,' said Maxia, a former Cook County sheriff's police officer. It was during her years in that job that she saw many people struggling with mental health problems, including battered women and the homeless. 'Because of what I saw … I knew where the struggle was and the need was,' she said about starting Toy Box Connection. 'I saw a great many homeless people who clearly did not have the resources or insurance to get the help they needed.' She was reminded about the need for mental health help when her nephew took his own life four years ago, a good friend died by suicide two years ago and a close friend in September 2024. 'I felt like I needed to do something positive,' said Maxia. 'I wanted to capture a day when there would be help, resources and people lifting each other up.' Elizabeth Frantz, a counselor with Healing Hearts Equine and Animal Assisted Mental Health Therapy in New Lenox, and Brooke Shawaluk, of Sarah's Stables in Willow Springs, brought a pony for attendees to pet and learn about the therapy. 'Mental Health is something there's a stigma around and not everybody wants to talk about it,' said Frantz, a counselor who uses animals in her therapy. 'Everyone at some point suffers from something.' She said simply having a pet can teach people mindfulness. Angel Espinosa and his dad, Oscar Espinosa, said they attended because they know the importance of getting help. 'Mental health is a key thing,' said Angel Espinosa. 'You have to speak clearly and communicate well with people to help you succeed in life. … It takes a lot to think clearly every day when you have mental health struggles.' Another mental health event this month is a seminar about diagnoses, treatment and recovery, self-care and resources by the National Alliance for the Mentally ill South Suburbs of Chicago. It will be held at 9:30 a.m. on June 7 at the Bremen Township Senior Complex, 15350 Oak Park Ave., Oak Forest. The Dolton Park District recently had a program on upcoming mental health services coming to the community with information from Envision Unlimited on The Living Room, the Drop-in Center, and Cultural and Faith Based Empowerment Program, in addition to NAMI South Suburbs. The Park District has a Teen Dating Violence Conference from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 7, at its fieldhouse, 721 Engle St., Dolton.
