RIYADH — Public bus transport projects across Saudi cities recorded a sharp increase in ridership during the first quarter of 2025, surpassing 23 million passengers in 15 cities, according to quarterly data released by the Transport General Authority (TGA).
The Q1 total represents a 34% increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, signaling growing public confidence in bus services as a reliable mobility option that contributes to daily convenience and improved urban quality of life.
In Riyadh, ridership exceeded 15 million, while Makkah saw more than 4 million passengers, bolstered by the Ramadan season and continued expansion of services.
Madinah recorded over 1.3 million passengers, and Jeddah logged more than 1.1 million.
In the Eastern Region (Dammam and Qatif), over 748,000 passengers used public bus services, reflecting ongoing service growth in one of the Kingdom's largest metropolitan areas.
Qassim saw more than 193,000 riders, Taif recorded over 161,000, and Jazan logged more than 104,000, continuing a rising trend in ridership across various regions.

Hospitals and health teams gear up to tackle heat stress cases at holy sites
Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — The Health Affairs Department at the Ministry of National Guard has allocated an integrated center to address heat stress cases in Arafat as part of its health plan for this year's Hajj season. The center, with a capacity of 20 beds, is fully equipped to quickly respond to cases of heat strokes and heat-related stress. The ministry also equipped its Mina hospital with a capacity of 26 beds, including emergency units, inpatient beds, cardiopulmonary resuscitation rooms, isolation rooms for infectious diseases, and specialized units for the immediate treatment of heat stress cases. The department has made available 10 state-of-the-art ambulances to handle emergency cases and transport them when needed. These ambulances are staffed around the clock by medical and nursing teams specialized in critical specialties, including emergency, critical care, internal medicine, preventive medicine, and epidemiology. Through this plan, the Health Affairs Department at the Ministry of National Guard seeks to ensure comprehensive and effective medical care for pilgrims. These services include preventive and curative care, infection control, water and food safety monitoring, and awareness and vaccination campaigns, which started before the start of the Hajj pilgrimage. The Ministry of Health has given top priority for the prevention of heat-related illnesses. It urged pilgrims to use umbrellas, drink water regularly, even if they are not thirsty, and wear light-colored, lightweight clothing. Symptoms of heat stress include headache, dizziness, excessive sweating, thirst, and nausea. Upon noticing these, pilgrims should immediately move to a shaded area, cool down with water, and drink plenty of fluids. Pilgrims are advised to avoid direct sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm, refrain from walking on hot surfaces, and exercise caution when engaging in strenuous activities, such as climbing mountains, on the Day of Arafat, which can increase the risk of heat stress. The ministry affirmed that the health sector is highly prepared, with over 34 equipped field health units strategically distributed across the holy sites. These units provide urgent medical care and rapid response for heat stress cases, enhancing pilgrim safety. The ministry has also launched a health awareness kit, available in eight languages, offering comprehensive healt h guidelines.

Port of NEOM receives Saudi Arabia's first automated cranes ahead of 2026 launch
NEOM — Port of NEOM has taken a major step toward becoming one of the world's most advanced and sustainable trade hubs with the arrival of Saudi Arabia's first fully automated, remote-controlled cranes. The milestone supports NEOM's plan to open Terminal 1 by 2026 and reinforces the port's strategic role on the Red Sea's East–West global trade route. The Ship-To-Shore (STS) and Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (eRTG) cranes are now operational at Port of NEOM. These next-generation machines will boost port automation, enabling high-volume container operations managed from secure remote stations, marking a shift toward a future-ready logistics workforce. Sean Kelly, Managing Director of Port of NEOM, described the achievement as a 'tangible milestone' for the region's industrial and trade ecosystem. 'We're not only accelerating industrial growth in northwest Saudi Arabia, but we're also setting a new benchmark for performance, efficiency, and innovation,' he said. The port's infrastructure build-out is progressing rapidly, including the completion of a 900-meter quay wall and deepening of the access channel to 18.5 meters—capable of accommodating the world's largest vessels transiting through the Suez Canal. Terminal 1 will feature fully automated container transport systems, increasing port efficiency and enhancing supply chain resilience across Saudi Arabia and beyond. SFDA elected to Management Committee of MedDRA, the 6th global regulatory body
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — In a move that highlights Saudi Arabia's growing prominence in global pharmaceutical governance, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been officially elected to the Management Committee of the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA). The authority has thus become the sixth regulatory authority worldwide to join this prestigious global medical body. This election marks a pivotal milestone for both Saudi Arabia and the international scientific community, reflecting global confidence in the SFDA's regulatory excellence and the Kingdom's strategic role in advancing international harmonization in drug safety and medical product oversight. MedDRA, developed by the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), is a globally recognized standard for coding and analyzing safety data across the lifecycle of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products. It plays a central role in regulatory communication, post-market surveillance, clinical trial reporting, and signal detection. SFDA's election to the MedDRA Steering committee was confirmed during the ICH Management Committee meeting held in Madrid, Spain, from May 11–12, 2025. With this appointment, SFDA joins a group of regulators, including the European Commission, U.S. FDA, UK MHRA, Health Canada, Japan's MHLW and PMDA, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), which participates as an observer. This strategic appointment reaffirms SFDA's active leadership within ICH working groups, particularly in the areas of medical terminology and pharmacovigilance. Among its most impactful contributions is the linguistic and technical leadership demonstrated in the translation and validation of over 20,000 MedDRA terms into Arabic—a landmark initiative completed between May and October 2022. This achievement significantly facilitates the implementation of MedDRA across Arabic-speaking regions and enhances inclusive pharmacovigilance throughout the MENA region.
