Delhi records hottest day of year as temp crosses 45°C, AQI remains 'poor'
Delhi and parts of northwest India sizzled as the mercury crossed the 45 degrees Celsius mark on Monday. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain around 44 to 45 degrees Celsius this week, with some respite expected around 12 June, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The ongoing heatwave is likely to persist for the next few days, fuelled by a stalled southwest monsoon.
IMD issues orange alert
Residents in the Capital woke to hot and humid conditions on Tuesday, with maximum temperatures forecast between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius and minimums hovering around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions today. Mostly clear skies and dust-raising winds are expected, potentially driving temperatures even higher.
Delhi weather forecast for the week
The IMD has also warned of possible heatwaves in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and western Rajasthan in the coming days. Some relief is anticipated from 12 June onwards, with rainfall activity likely to increase in southern and northeastern regions, and isolated heavy showers expected.
Air quality remains in 'poor' category in Delhi-NCR
Delhi's air quality index (AQI) remained in the 'poor' category on Tuesday, following a brief improvement. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reimposed Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (Grap) across the Delhi-NCR region with immediate effect to tackle rising pollution levels.
On 10 June, Delhi's AQI was recorded at 220 at 8 am, compared to 212 on 9 June, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
According to the CPCB, AQI values are categorised as follows: 0–50 'good', 51–100 'satisfactory', 101–200 'moderate', 201–300 'poor', 301–400 'very poor', and 401–500 'severe'.

Himachal not spared, Una sizzles at 44.2C Shimla: Heatwave-like conditions continue to grip parts of Himachal Pradesh, with low and mid-hill areas sizzling on Tuesday. Both minimum and maximum temperatures remained above normal. Una recorded the highest maximum temperature at a scorching 44.2°C, according to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla. This figure was 5.8°C above the seasonal average. Bilaspur recorded a maximum of 40.8°C, Mandi and Kangra 40°C each, Sundernagar 39.5°C, and Bhuntar 38.6°C – also 5.8° above normal. Chamba recorded a maximum of 37.1°C, Nahan 37°C, Solan 35.5°C, and Seobagh in Kullu district 35.6°C. Among the tourist destinations, Manali recorded a day temperature of 31.2°C, Kasauli 31.6°C, and Shimla 29.5°C. Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti recorded a maximum of 30.4°C, while Kalpa in Kinnaur registered a day temperature of 27.8°C. At 29.3°C, Neri in Hamirpur district recorded the highest minimum temperature on Tuesday. Severe Cold Front Brings Snow In South Africa
Johannesburg: A severe cold front sweeping across South Africa since the weekend brought heavy snowfall which has led to road closures, power outages and a fatal road accident, officials said. Five people were killed in a road accident along the N2 highway due to the adverse weather, Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose told local broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Tuesday. The South African Weather Service warned citizens late last week there would be a big drop in temperatures this week across the country, accompanied by disruptive rain, damaging winds, and snow over eastern areas. South Africa regularly receives snowfall during its winter months from June through August, with temperatures diving below zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). Snow has been reported since Monday across provinces including Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, prompting closures along sections of the N2 highway that connects the provinces, according to the KwaZulu-Natal transport department. Power utility Eskom said in a post on X that it was "experiencing a high number of customer calls nationally, due to widespread power outages caused by inclement weather." More resources were being secured to ensure prompt resolution to the power outages, Mr Eskom said. The weather service forecast that the cold front would persist through midweek.
