ECLAC Forum in Chile to Assess Latin America and Caribbean's Progress on Sustainable Development Goals
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is hosting a high-level forum at its headquarters in Santiago, Chile, from 31 March to 4 April. The forum aims to evaluate the region's progress towards achieving the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
ECLAC Executive Secretary Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Peru's Deputy Foreign Minister Felix Denegri, and senior UN officials, including Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, will deliver speeches at the event. Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS, reported on the forum.
The sustainable development programme, adopted in 2015, aims to eliminate poverty, improve healthcare and education, and reduce inequality. A new report will be presented at the forum, highlighting the region's advancements and challenges, particularly in health, gender equality, and economic growth. The report will also address obstacles to achieving faster progress.
High-level attendees include foreign ministers from Bolivia and Antigua and Barbuda, as well as Chilean ministers responsible for social development, health, and women's issues. Barbados will be represented by officials responsible for housing and social empowerment.

123 Palestinians killed in 24hrs as UN experts accuse Israel of genocide in Gaza
At least 123 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours as Israeli military operations continued across the Gaza Strip, amid mounting international accusations that Israel is committing crimes against humanity. In a report released on Tuesday, United Nations experts accused Israel of conducting 'a systematic campaign to erase Palestinian life,' citing the targeting of civilians sheltering in schools and places of worship. According to Gaza's Civil Defense, 31 people were killed on Wednesday morning by Israeli fire while attempting to reach a food distribution centre. Similar incidents have claimed dozens of lives near aid points run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation since late May, according to the Red Cross and local emergency services. Gaza's Government Media Office accused Israel of deliberately fostering chaos through starvation and of 'directly targeting starving civilians using drones, helicopters, and tanks.' On the diplomatic front, Israel's Channel 12 reported on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to 'end the war now' during a phone call held Monday evening. Citing unnamed sources, the channel said Trump used unusually strong language, telling Netanyahu: 'I want you to end the war.' In a bid to ease the escalating crisis, Netanyahu stated in a video posted to his Telegram account on Tuesday that 'significant progress' had been made in negotiations with Hamas over a potential prisoner exchange. However, he cautioned that it was 'too early to raise hopes.' Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi dismissed Netanyahu's remarks as 'deception,' accusing him of misleading the Israeli public and obstructing a genuine deal that could secure the release of captives. Mediated talks, led by Qatar and Egypt, are ongoing in Doha, though prospects for a ceasefire remain uncertain amid conflicting signals from the parties involved. On the ground, fighting persisted in southern Gaza. The Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, said its fighters were engaged in fierce clashes with Israeli forces in the city of Khan Younis. The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, also claimed responsibility for the sniper killing of an Israeli soldier in the nearby town of Abasan al-Kabira. Israeli media reported heavy combat in the area, with the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation confirming that four soldiers were wounded in separate incidents during the latest battles. Two were injured when an anti-tank missile struck a tank from the 74th Armoured Battalion, while two others were wounded in a separate shooting.

Over 26,000 New Sudanese Refugees Registered in Egypt
By Ahmad El-Assasy The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced the registration of over 26,000 newly arrived Sudanese nationals in Egypt during May 2025, as part of a broader wave of returns following recent military advances in Sudan. Sudanese Refugee Numbers in Egypt Climb While the UN agency did not confirm whether all newly registered individuals arrived within May or earlier, it reported that the total number of Sudanese registered with the agency since the conflict erupted in April 2023 has reached approximately 668,979. According to UNHCR estimates, Egypt now hosts around 1.5 million Sudanese refugees, in addition to 67,000 refugees of other nationalities who fled Sudan amid the ongoing conflict. Continued Cross-Border Movements Despite the rising refugee numbers, Egypt has also seen a large-scale return of displaced persons back to Sudan. Reports show that nearly 150,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed back into Sudan through the Arqeen and Ashkeet border crossings since the beginning of 2025. Egypt remains one of the main destinations for Sudanese fleeing war, with heavy congestion reported at its southern border crossings. Authorities have been working to improve transportation by reopening the Nile ferry route between Egypt's Aswan and Sudan's Wadi Halfa, aiming to ease the movement of returnees.
