Italian telecom giant TIM selects Abu Dhabi for regional HQ, plans IoT and AI excellence centre
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has entered into a strategic partnership with TIM Group (Telecom Italia), Italy, to support the company's expansion in the region.
The move advances TIM's international expansion, while bolstering Abu Dhabi's position as a global hub for advanced digital connectivity and next-generation technologies.
The strategic partnership was formalised during a ceremony at the Italy-UAE Business Forum in Rome, witnessed by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy.
Under the partnership, TIM's regional headquarters in Abu Dhabi would introduce its expertise in secure communications, cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) applications to enhance industrial productivity and strengthen Abu Dhabi's digital infrastructure.
Abu Dhabi-TIM digital collaboration
As part of this effort, the company will assess opportunities to develop advanced cyber and quantum communication solutions for secure and resilient public and private networks.
TIM will also explore the possibility of implementing broadband and telecommunications technologies to support the rollout of 5G and 6G projects in collaboration with local and international partners.
A key focus of TIM's potential expansion into Abu Dhabi is the creation of a Centre of Excellence dedicated to IoT and AI.
Leveraging TIM's expertise, the centre would drive innovation in areas such as smart cities, smart homes and smart energy systems.
The company is also exploring establishing edge computing as a service in the emirate, which would enable faster and more efficient data processing to enhance IoT and entertainment applications.
The company's Abu Dhabi headquarters would serve as a strategic base to oversee operations across the Middle East, North Africa and India.
Through this initiative, TIM also aims to play a central role in strengthening the local digital ecosystem by collaborating with universities, investors and technology firms to drive research, generate intellectual property and support talent development in critical sectors.
Badr Al-Olama, Director General of ADIO, said the collaboration with TIM is poised to introduce transformative technologies to critical industries, furthering the emirate's broader diversification objectives and accelerating economic growth.
'By strengthening our technological infrastructure and attracting high-impact investors, we ensure that innovation not only drives Abu Dhabi's competitiveness, but also constitutes the foundation of its economic development,' he said.
Pietro Labriola, CEO at TIM, said the collaboration with ADIO will potentially enable the company to introduce its cutting-edge digital and telecom solutions, creating opportunities for businesses and governments alike.
'Abu Dhabi is home to the fastest internet connectivity globally and its strategic location, advanced infrastructure and commitment to innovation make it the ideal base for our proposed expansion in the region and to cooperate with our partners on development projects in geographic areas of mutual interest,' he said.

Watch: Abu Dhabi conducts test flight of driverless flying taxi
Abu Dhabi has taken a giant step into the future of air mobility with the landmark public demonstration of a test flight of an autonomous flying taxi conducted in the Capital. In a 50-second video clip released by Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) on Friday, the electric driverless vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is shown taking off from the helipad of Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, and cruising above the Abu Dhabi Marina. Watch the video here: ADIO, in collaboration with @ehang and @multilevelgroup, hosted a landmark test flight of an autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Abu Dhabi. @saviabudhabi @gcaauae Learn more: #InvestWithAbuDhabi — Abu Dhabi Investment Office (@InvestAbuDhabi) June 13, 2025 The test flight was conducted with the support of Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC), Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), in collaboration with Chinese technology company EHang and Multi Level Group (MLG). ADIO did not mention how many minutes the EHang-powered flying taxi was up in the air but underscored the test flight 'was aimed at evaluating the efficiency and operational capabilities of flying taxis.' 'The trial was also a pivotal step towards integrating urban air mobility into everyday life,' ADIO noted, adding, 'The (test flight) validated critical technologies, including hot-weather performance in Abu Dhabi's climate alongside airspace coordination, route planning and vertiport operations.' 'Conducted under the oversight of the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the flight provided live proof of the regulatory, operational and infrastructure frameworks essential for safely scaling this new mode of transport,' ADIO continued. 'We are proving that urban air taxis will be a part of everyday life, here in Abu Dhabi and around the world. This is how we diversify our economy, cultivate homegrown capabilities and make the emirate a global leader in next-generation transport,' added Badr Al Olama, director-general at ADIO. Two-seater flying taxi The flying taxi tested was EHang's EH216‑S. It is touted as the world's first certified, pilotless, two-seater eVTOL aircraft. The EH216-S features eight arms equipped with 16 propellers. Each propeller is powered by a dual-motor system, totalling 32 independent electric motors. According to EHang, the design ensures efficient vertical take-off and landing capabilities with a high level of operational safety and redundancy or the practice of having multiple independent safety systems in place to ensure that if one system fails, another will take over. ADIO noted the Chinese technology-powered flying taxi is 'tailored for urban environments and purpose-built for applications such as sightseeing, short-distance connections and tourism.' It operates with minimal noise and no runway, making it ideally suited to the evolving infrastructure of future cities. Meanwhile, EHang earlier confirmed plans to establish regional operations in Abu Dhabi, including a final assembly line and support facilities, according to ADIO.

AI‑Powered 'RIQ' Sets New Reinsurance Benchmark
Arabian Post Staff -Dubai Abu Dhabi‑based IHC, in collaboration with BlackRock and Lunate, has officially launched Reinsurance Intelligence Quotient—RIQ—a global, AI‑native reinsurance platform headquartered in the Abu Dhabi Global Market. Anchored by over US $1 billion in initial equity, RIQ aims to underwrite more than US $10 billion in liabilities, spanning property and casualty, life, and specialty lines. The platform unites human talent with advanced artificial intelligence to refine risk selection, cost control, underwriting, and customer service. Its AI core provides real‑time insights and precision decision‑making, seeking to optimise capital deployment on a global scale. Registered with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of ADGM, RIQ is in the final stages of securing full regulatory approval. ADVERTISEMENT The board of directors, chaired by Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, includes notable figures such as Syed Basar Shueb, H E Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Sofia Abdellatif Lasky, and RIQ CEO Mark Wilson, former leader at Aviva and AIA. The governance structure positions RIQ to balance regional expertise with global vision, leveraging its strategic partners. The initiative builds on a May plan unveiled by IHC, BlackRock, and Lunate to establish an AI‑powered reinsurer targeting US $10 billion in liabilities with over US $1 billion in capital. BlackRock will contribute its Aladdin technology and insurance asset management services, while Lunate brings private and public market investment capabilities. IHC CEO Syed Basar Shueb has emphasised the venture's role in accelerating Abu Dhabi's and the wider region's nascent insurance and capital market ecosystems. 'RIQ is the embodiment of IHC's vision to invest in the next frontier of global financial services,' Shueb stated. Meanwhile, RIQ CEO Mark Wilson described the platform as purpose‑built for a changing market, combining speed and flexibility backed by deep capital. Dr Al Jaber, who also serves as UAE's minister of industry and advanced technology, said the platform would 'connect global capital with high‑growth markets, all from the heart of Abu Dhabi's thriving financial centre'. This reflects a broader strategic push by Abu Dhabi to position itself as a hub for innovative financial services and AI‑driven offerings. Analysts have observed that RIQ's AI‑native architecture could challenge traditional reinsurance models, where legacy systems often hinder real‑time pricing accuracy and capital efficiency. With global risk landscapes evolving due to climate change, cyber threats, and geopolitical instability, the deployment of AI in underwriting and risk transfer represents a notable shift in industry norms. Industry commentators note that IHC, already one of the region's largest investment houses, continues to accelerate its diversification strategy, adding reinsurance to its growing portfolio that spans technology, energy, real estate, healthcare, and food production. Its ability to marshal more than US $455 billion in assets and maintain tight ties to the Abu Dhabi ruling establishment adds strategic depth to RIQ's capital and governance framework. Key trends marking this launch include the convergence of finance and bleeding‑edge technology, a stronger regional emphasis on insurance capacity, and elevated geopolitical importance of financial resilience. RIQ is set to capitalise on these developments, channeling global capital into emerging markets, while establishing Abu Dhabi as a next‑generation centre for financial innovation.
