‘I hope it inspires people to get outdoors': Woodland walk opens in Lisburn named after Lady Mary Peters
A woodland walking trail has officially opened in Lisburn named after Lady Mary Peters, the first landmark of its kind to be named after the Olympic gold medallist.
It was officially opened on Thursday by the athlete who was joined by the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh, Councillor Kurtis Dickson.
The woodland trail, set within the scenic grounds of Aberdelghy Golf Course, was proposed by pupils at Fort Hill Integrated Primary School in recognition of Lady Mary's historic victory at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
Lady Mary said that she was 'deeply honoured' and that, knowing the idea came from young people in the local area, makes it 'even more special'.
The 1.2km walk links the Lagan towpath with the golf course and travels down Conway Lane reconnecting with the towpath.
Over the past 12 months pupils at Fort Hill Integrated Primary School have worked with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council to participate in a series of planting schemes designed to enhance the biodiversity of the area.
Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Kurtis Dickson, said: 'This woodland trail is a fitting tribute to Lady Mary Peters — a local legend whose achievements continue to inspire generations. It's a wonderful addition to our parks network, offering a peaceful and scenic route that celebrates both her legacy and the natural beauty of our area."
Speaking at the launch, Lady Mary Peters said: "I am deeply honoured to have this beautiful woodland walk named after me. Knowing that the idea came from young people makes it even more special. I hope this space inspires people to get out and enjoy the outdoors and cherish our natural environment."

Councillor Jonathan Craig, Chair of the council's Communities and Wellbeing Committee, said: 'Lady Mary's Woodland Walk is a shining example of how we are enhancing biodiversity while creating beautiful, accessible green spaces for everyone to enjoy.
'Our parks and open spaces across Lisburn & Castlereagh are among our greatest assets.
'Projects like this demonstrate our commitment to protecting nature and promoting wellbeing through enhancing and developing our parks and outdoor spaces."
To support local wildlife, a native hedgerow has been introduced, featuring species such as Blackthorn, Crab Apple, Hawthorn, Hazel, Holly and Rowan trees—providing both habitat and nourishment for birds and other wildlife. Additionally, native wildflowers and pollinator-friendly bulbs have been planted to sustain vital pollinators throughout the seasons.

Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and actor James Norton have taken part in a wild sea swim for a marine conservation charity. On Friday, the two were among those to take the plunge in a 10-hour endurance ocean swim at Joss Bay in Kent, to raise money for the Blue Marine Foundation, a charity committed to addressing overfishing. Ahead of the event, they shared their earliest memories of the sea and pressed the importance of allowing future generations to 'experience the magic of healthy seas'. Ms Adlington told the PA news agency: 'I've always felt a deep connection to water, so when the opportunity came up to support coastal restoration through this event with Talisker and Blue Marine Foundation, it just felt like a natural fit. 'As a swimming challenge, this one stands out because of its direct impact on protecting and preserving marine life, with £150 from every kilometre swum helping to fund essential conservation work.' The two-time gold medal swimmer added: 'I hope people see this event as more than just a challenge, it's a call to action.' A report published by Blue Marine Foundation in July 2024 noted a 92% UK reduction in seagrass meadows and a 95% decline in native oyster reefs over the last century. Happy Valley actor Norton said: 'Like everyone, I'm in awe of the ocean. It's wild, powerful, and under threat. 'Taking a stand is about protecting biodiversity and ensuring future generations can experience the magic of healthy seas.' He added that his family goes by the mantra 'you'll never regret a swim' but admitted he had never been involved with this level of endurance swimming. New government regulations came into force on Friday which give water industry regulator Ofwat the power to retrospectively prevent bonuses paid in cash, shares or long-term incentive schemes to chief executives and chief financial officers for breaches of environmental, customer service or financial standards in a given financial year. Ms Adlington did not have a direct challenge for water companies in the UK but added that the Blue Marine Foundation was committed to coastal regeneration and improving UK waters. Ahead of the event, Norton said: 'My earliest memories of the sea are going on day trips to Scarborough. 'My whole village would cram into a coach and head to the beach for a day of fish and chips, rock and candy floss.' For every kilometre swum by participants at Joss Bay between 7am and 5pm on Friday, Talisker, who are supporting the event, will donate £150 to the foundation.

Host more events to inspire the next generation, says Neita
Daryll Neita has called for the UK to host more world-class sporting events to inspire the next generation. The European Athletics Championships come to the UK for the first time next summer with Alexander Stadium in Birmingham playing host. It will mark the first time that the UK has hosted a standalone major athletics championships since the 2017 World Championships in London, with Neita among more than 100 signatories of an open letter released this week calling for the showpiece event to return to the capital in 2029. Racing in front of a home crowd at Birmingham 2026 is an opportunity that Neita is relishing as she plays her part in trying to give athletics a spotlight in non-Olympic years. "I'm all for inspiring the next generation," she said. "I have an athletics community where I plan sports days and it's super important for me that young kids have the opportunity to be inspired by sport and see it live. "For people who watch us on television, to have the opportunity to come down and see us in person is brilliant. "That's what we need as a sporting country. We need this legacy of putting on top events more often." The past two London Athletics Meets have drawn in sell-out crowds and the 2025 event is no different, which Neita feels is part of a wider boom in interest. "This sport has been growing in the past few years and it's been great to be part of that evolution,' she added. "For so long there was this talk of athletics needing to be picked up and needing help to get more eyes on it, so it's great to see the amount of opportunities that are now coming through. "People are interested in it, we just need the exposure."
