World's best airline for 2025 named by AirlineRatings.com

CNN09-02-2025

How important is extra legroom on a plane? Extremely important, if the results of the AirlineRatings.com annual round-up of the best airlines across the globe is anything to go by.
Korean Air has been named Airline of the Year for 2025, beating out last year's winner Qatar Airways, in the Australia-based aviation safety and product rating agency's official list of the top 25 full-service airlines.
The South Korean flag carrier's commitment to 'passenger comfort' was cited as one of the main reasons for its triumph — both Korean Air and Japan Airline provide the most spacious economy class seating of any global airline.
Korean Air was commended for maintaining its original seat configuration and prioritizing the needs of economy travelers.
'While many airlines have added a 10th seat per row on 777 aircraft and reduced seat pitch in economy to 31 to 32 inches (down from the previous 32 to 33 inches), Korean Air has chosen not to follow this trend,' AirlineRatings.com CEO Sharon Petersen said in a statement.
The airline's recent merger with Asiana Airlines — the largest consolidation in Asian aviation history — was also noted as a contributing factor to its place at the top.
Air New Zealand was third on the 'carefully selected' list, while Cathay Pacific came in fourth place on the 'carefully selected' list.
The top 25 airlines all meet a list of specific requirements, such as providing a comprehensive full-service experience, and having an economy seat pitch of a minimum of 31 inches.
'These awards are not a popularity contest or a people's choice award,' added Petersen
'As airline experts, we conduct a meticulous assessment of each category to help travelers identify the best airlines for quality, value, and safety.'
Meanwhile, AirAsia topped AirlineRatings.com's list of the best 20 Low Cost Airlines for 2025, beating out Jetstar and AirBaltic, which came in second and third place respectively.
This year, the product rating agency added a new category, Best Hybrid Airlines, in a move to celebrate hybrid airlines and their 'significant positive impact on the travel industry.'
Jetblue came in at number one, followed by Westjet in second place, and
'These airlines deserve recognition for their excellence in hybrid operations and their innovative offerings,' said Peterson.

Upcoming Stock Splits This Week (June 9 to June 13)

These are the upcoming stock splits for the week of June 9 to June 13, based on TipRanks' Stock Splits Calendar. A stock split is a corporate maneuver that increases the number of shares outstanding by issuing more shares to existing holders, all while keeping the company's total market value unchanged. This lowers the price per share, often making the stock more affordable and potentially more appealing to retail investors. Confident Investing Starts Here: In contrast, a reverse stock split reduces the number of shares by consolidating them, which raises the price per share without affecting the company's valuation. Companies typically turn to this strategy to meet stock exchange requirements – like Nasdaq's minimum price threshold – and avoid delisting. Whether intended to boost investor interest or maintain compliance with exchange rules, these adjustments often serve as key signals for traders tracking a company's strategic direction. Let's take a look at the upcoming stock splits for the week. Nektar Therapeutics (NKTR) – Nektar Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company developing novel drug candidates. Following stockholder approval on May 23, the company formalized a 1-for-15 reverse stock split. The split takes effect on June 8, with trading on a split‑adjusted basis beginning June 9. Fangdd Network Group (DUO) – China-based Fangdd is a technology-driven real estate platform. The company confirmed a 16-for-1 reverse share consolidation, effective June 9, aimed at boosting its share price and maintaining compliance with listing standards. Bone Biologics (BBLG) – Bone Biologics develops orthobiologic products for spinal fusion procedures. After gaining shareholder approval on May 30, the company filed for a 1-for-6 reverse stock split, which takes effect on June 10. The goal is to elevate its share price back into compliance with Nasdaq's minimum pricing rules and enhance its appeal to institutional investors. Cero Therapeutics Holdings (CERO) – Cero Therapeutics is a biotech firm developing engineered T-cell immunotherapies for cancer. Following shareholder approval in November and board action on December 25, it enacted a 1-for-100 reverse stock split effective on January 8, consolidating every 100 shares into one. The move aimed to boost the stock above $1.00 and secure compliance with Nasdaq's listing standards. Inuvo, Inc. (INUV) – Inuvo specializes in AI-powered marketing technologies and is gearing up for a 1-for-10 reverse stock split on June 10. The move is designed to lift its share price, restore Nasdaq compliance, and strengthen its financial foundation for future growth. O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) – O'Reilly Automotive is a specialty retailer of automotive aftermarket parts and accessories. On March 13, the company declared a 15-for-1 forward stock split, with the distribution of additional shares set for June 9 and split-adjusted trading beginning June 10. SaverOne 2014 (SVRE) – Israel-based SaverOne develops driver safety systems that block mobile-device distractions in vehicles. The company executed a 1-for-3 reverse ADS split, effective June 11, adjusting its American Depositary Share ratio to strengthen its Nasdaq standing and enhance market appeal. China Natural Resources, Inc. (CHNR) – China Natural Resources is focused on mining exploration in Inner Mongolia and is working toward picking up Zimbabwe's Williams Minerals lithium mine for up to $1.75 billion. The company executed an 8-for-1 reverse stock split effective June 12 to meet Nasdaq's $1 minimum bid price requirement, converting every eight shares into one to boost its per-share value and comply with listing rules

Major Coles move to take on Chemist Warehouse, Bunnings, Amazon after $400 million loss: 'Stood still'

Coles is beefing up one particular section of its supermarket empire to take on rivals that aren't Woolworths or Aldi. Chemist Warehouse, Bunnings and Amazon have been soaking up the health, beauty and household categories while the grocery giants fight it out on food and other essentials. Coles lost an estimated $400 million to these other rivals in this sector, and it is making some changes to get a bigger piece of that pie. Leanne White has been appointed the supermarket's new general manager for health and home, and she revealed Coles' recent "step change". 'We have all been working with a real supermarket lens on how to execute our offer and potentially have not lifted our eyes enough on the broader market set,' she said. Coles, Woolworths shelves reveal devastating reality for coffee lovers: 'From $49 to $62' Centrelink payment change happening next week: 'Will increase' ATO capital gains tax warning as Aussies caught doing the wrong thing: 'Focus area' 'We have also lost sight of the importance of health and home. The reality is we have stood still … we really, really need to lift our eyes.' The health, beauty and household category is a large sector to tackle. It includes items like makeup, supplements, cleaning products, and everything in between. Bunnings and even The Reject Shop became unlikely sellers of household goods like laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid, with their prices often decently lower than Coles and Woolworths. Meanwhile, there has been no shortage of articles raving about beauty items that have been selling out left, right, and centre at Chemist Warehouse, which has massively expanded its beauty and fragrance Chinese marketplace Temu has also carved out a space in the household sector by selling items for a fraction of the price of Coles and Woolworths. You can pick up an electric toothbrush from one of the big supermarkets for $25 to $50, depending on whether it's on special. But on Temu, they sell for just over $10. Coles wants to hop on this bandwagon and has reportedly asked suppliers in the health, beauty and household categories to give the supermarket an inside look at their promotional campaigns up to a year in advance. White told The Australian that having a much longer view of how these products would be sold to the big players would hopefully give her a "significant opportunity" to grow in this sector. 'By moving towards a 9 to 12 month planning timeline, we create better opportunities for Coles, our suppliers, and ultimately, for our customers," she said. "Many of our suppliers are already adopting this best-practice approach, with this enhanced planning allowing us to be agile to customer trends.' These non-supermarket players have raked in roughly $100 million per year over the last four years from the new trio sector, according to analysis produced by Coles. Woolworths chief Amanda Bardwell admitted earlier this year that it too was facing "increased levels of competition" from the likes of Bunnings, Amazon, and Chemist Warehouse, as Aussies "increasingly" shop at multiple retailers to get the best price. But Coles believes it could claw back as much as $1 billion in annual sales if it's able to stamp a bigger imprint in the health, beauty, and household categories.

Miracle after man, woman lost in blizzard

A pair of hikers have been rescued from a dangerous blizzard in the shadow of Australia's tallest mountain, with shocking footage showing the treacherous conditions they faced. The 31-year-old man and 28-year-old woman became stranded in a blizzard below Mount Carruthers, about 3km from Mount Kosciuszko, on Saturday, with rescue efforts hampered by a 'white out' blizzard and strong winds. Alpine rescue staff from the SES and police had gone out to help the pair, along with paramedics and the police rescue squad. About midday on Saturday, the rescue party got within 1.2km of the stranded bushwalkers, but the extreme conditions forced them to turn back. Specialist emergency services were then forced to take over the search, and were finally able to reach the pair, who were unharmed, in the early hours of Sunday. About 10.30pm the specialist alpine police and SES crews hiked to the stranded pair. Footage released by police shows at least nine people trudging through darkness, as wind drives snow sideways. Just after midnight Sunday, the pair were escorted to a makeshift camp set up by rescuers, but the group had to wait there again as the Snowy River rose, and more strong winds and heavy snowfall inhibited their descent. Everybody got off the mountain about 4am Sunday, police said. The incident comes as the ski season officially kicks off in Australia's alpine regions. Monaro police Acting Inspector Andrew Woods said bushwalkers need to be prepared and should consult checklists such as the Think Before Trek guide. 'As we move into the snow season, it's vital that Kosciusko National Park users are properly prepared before venturing into alpine regions. 'It's highly recommended that park users monitor weather forecasts closely and continually as conditions change quickly. 'The use of the online National parks and Wildlife Services Trip Intention Forms and personal locator beacon is strongly encouraged.' The ski resorts at Mount Kosciuszko have received up to 30cm of snow since Saturday - the official start of ski season in Australia. In Victoria, more than 20 people became stranded in their cars about 10.50pm on Saturday near Mount Hotham. The convoy was snowed-in overnight into Sunday, remaining stuck for about 19 hours as more than 50cm of snow fell. A man in his 40s had minor injuries after his vehicle rolled, and a fire truck became stuck after being deployed to help. Rescue crews rode snowmobiles into the Blue Rag Range Track, near Dargo High Plains Road, with People in the stranded vehicles had food, water and protection from the elements, emergency services said.
