Newport woman caught red-handed selling fireworks illegally
Newport trading standards seized fireworks from Carly-Ann Peterson's house in the city that were worth around £3,200 and contained 17kg of explosives.
She pleaded guilty to an offence under the Explosives Regulations 2014 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The 23-year-old defendant committed the offence on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 just before last Guy Fawkes Night.
(Image: Newport trading standards found fireworks that were worth around £3,200) At Cwmbran Magistrates' Court, Peterson, of Lime Crescent, Newport was fined £320 and ordered to pay £400 prosecution costs and a £128 victim surcharge.
The total amount of £848 will be paid off at the rate of £20 per month, starting on October 22.
A council spokesperson said: 'Our trading standards officers, working alongside Gwent Police, visited a house in Newport after receiving allegations that fireworks were being sold from the premises which was not licenced for the safe storage of explosives.
'We seized fireworks containing 17kg of explosives from the house, with an estimated retail value of around £3,200.
'Unlicenced sellers operate at risk to themselves and their local community.
'If you are buying fireworks, please only do so from licenced sellers.'

Gwent Police have now arrested three men in relation to the incident. 'Two men, aged 34 and 38, from Bristol were arrested on suspicion of robbery and have been released on police bail,' a spokesman said. 'A third man - a 33-year-old from Bristol - was also later arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault by beating of an emergency worker and released on police bail. 'Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to submit via the Major Incident Public Portal.' G4S vans are used to deliver and collect cash from a range of businesses, including pubs, cafes and shops. In a previous release from 2016, the company said it transported £300billion of cash every year. Its vans are armoured and fitted with CCTV, satellite tracking technology and SmartWater, which can link perpetrators to specific cash stolen. Cash boxes also contain dispensers that stain cash with ink when triggered, rendering notes unusable. A spokesman for G4S declined to comment on an 'active police investigation.'
