Crews investigate damaging fire at CVS, Publix in St. Pete Beach shopping center
ST.PETE BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – Several stores, including CVS and Publix, at the Dolphin Village shopping center are severely damaged following a fire on Tuesday.
Marissa Bauer, an employee at a shop in the plaza, called 911 when she heard fire alarms sound, Tuesday afternoon.
She described, 'I mean, it was just a wall of orange flames and black smoke coming from the top.'
Dozens of crews responded to extinguish the flames believed to have started at the CVS.
'I kind of went out the front door, and I saw a bunch of people running outside of CVS, and I popped my head in and saw the whole store engulfed in flames. I ran in and grabbed my coworker,' said Bauer. 'My heart dropped a little bit, I started freaking out. I definitely started to worry it was going to spread over into our store quickly.'
According to leaders with St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue, the fire reignited at approximately 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and spread from the CVS to a nearby Publix and other surrounding shops.

Families who live in the area are surprised by the extent of the damage.
'Unrecognizable, I mean it's not even the same structure,' Max Sparrow said
Fire department leaders are investigating what sparked the fire. Several stores experienced extensive damage.
CVS released the following statement:
'We're grateful to St. Petersburg Fire Rescue for quickly responding to the fire at our Gulf Boulevard store this afternoon. We're cooperating with investigators as they try to determine the cause and are thankful no one was seriously hurt. The store is closed due to extensive damage. Patients with immediate prescription needs can visit the CVS Pharmacy at 3501 54th Avenue South for assistance.'
Publix released the following statement:
'Our store is not open currently and we are following the direction of the local fire department on reopening. We will refer all questions to the local fire and police departments. As always, our priority remains the safety of our associates and customers.'

"Our beloved dog Zeus was sitting peacefully in the lanai with my dad when he heard a small animal in the backyard," wrote Alkhatib. According to the owner, Zeus "ran out the doggy door to investigate" and "within seconds," the alligator "grabbed the dog and dragged him back into the water." "We rushed outside with a flashlight and were shocked to see Zeus swimming back toward us, wounded but fighting to survive," Alkhatib continued. "My mom waded into the water to help him out, and we rushed him to the nearest emergency vet as he was bleeding heavily from his mouth." One family member recalled the attack to WFLA, "All of a sudden, I couldn't hear him anymore. My dad came in frantic. I'd never seen him like that. He said, 'The alligator just took Zeus.'" "The alligator had just let go of Zeus," Alkhatib told the outlet. "We started yelling at him to come toward us. When he got closer, he got tired. So we had to kind of go into the pond a little bit to get him." Zeus suffered a displaced jaw and multiple puncture wounds to his neck in the vicious attack, according to the GoFundMe page. The page has raised over $6,800 of its $10,000 to help cover veterinary bills. Photos released by the dog's owner show the pooch bleeding from his neck and his injured jaw. Alkhatib called the dog's escape from the attack "a miracle" on her GoFundMe page. "The vet told us the gator had just missed his jugular — it looked like Zeus's entire head had been in the gator's mouth. The fact that he made it out alive is nothing short of a miracle," she wrote. Person who wrote bomb threat on Florida flight sought by FBI
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The FBI Tampa Field Office is searching for a passenger who seemingly wrote a bomb threat on an Allegiant flight at Florida's St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. Investigators said the threat was found on Allegiant Airlines Flight #2006's lavatory door on April 25. The flight was departing St. Pete-Clearwater Airport and headed to Cincinnati. The crew discovered the threat while the plane was taxiing from the gate before departure. The person wrote, 'Bomb on flight check cargo. All Allegiant flight.'
