PETALING JAYA: When V. Saravanan left Perak earlier this season to resume his career in Finland, he did so with hope – that the club he once starred for would continue thriving and nurturing future national players.
Now, that hope is in tatters.
The former Perak striker was left stunned after learning that the Seladang had pulled out of the Super League season next year, following an announcement by the club's backers that they could no longer afford to fund the team.
Saravanan, 47, who played for Perak from 1998 to 2004 and helped the team lift two Malaysia Cups (1998, 2000), said it was devastating blow.
'First, it was announced that the team wouldn't be sending squads for the President and Youth Cups. I thought maybe the owners wanted to focus solely on the first team,' he said.
'But now, to hear that they are shutting down completely and only pay 20 percent of six months' worth of owed salaries. It is heartbreaking.
'Perak have been a cornerstone of Malaysian football. If they disappear, it would be a massive loss for the country.'
Saravanan, who briefly returned as Perak's assistant coach in 2023, said he personally witnessed the emergence of several promising talents - and now fears for their future.
'Moses Raj and Ahmad Daniel Hakimi (Ahmad Azmil) were among the players I helped groom. Moses even made it to the national Under-19 team,' he said.
'I worry for these youngsters. They'll now have to scramble for new clubs. It's tough, and I really empathise with them.
'I still hope someone will step in to save the club and rebuild it. Perak must not die.'

It was Pearly-Thinaah's eighth defeat to Shengshu-Tan Ning in 11 meetings. Pearly-Thinaah were playing in their fourth straight tournament but refused to blame their defeat on fatigue. "We are disappointed. Towards the end, I made two mistakes. I rushed a bit," Pearly told the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "This is what I still need to learn day by day, so I still need some time and I hope I can be better in the future. "All four of us were really tired and it was point by point towards the end. "Tiredness was not a big issue. I think it's the mindset. They were calmer than us while I made two silly mistakes. I need to learn from this''. On the positives from the match, Thinaah said: "I think the main positive is the support that we gave each other throughout the match. "We always tried to lift each other's spirits when we were leading and trailing." Pearly-Thinaah's best achievement previously was capturing the Super 750 French Open in 2022. After struggling with inconsistency in the past, the pair are slowly improving their form and growing in confidence. Pearly-Thinaah have reached three finals so far this year after triumphing in the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up in the Indonesian Masters in January. The duo also became the first Malaysians in the women's doubles to make it to the Indonesian Open final since Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, who won the title in 2009. KUALA LUMPUR: The Netherlands-born playmaker, Hector Hevel, is impressed by the standard of Malaysia's Super League. The 29-year-old said the competition was better than he expected. Hevel, who recently debuted for Harimau Malaya, confirmed he will be signing for Johor Darul Ta'zim following his stint in Portugal with Portimonense. "You can tell the quality of the Super League by the local boys in the national team," said Hevel. "They have a certain level and most of them play in the Super League, so it says something about the quality here." Hevel, whose grandfather is from Melaka, has featured in top-flight football across Europe. Still, he noted that the Super League here holds its own in terms of competitiveness and technical ability. "Maybe the rhythm is a little faster in Europe, but overall, football is football," he said. "Every country has its own style. What matters is how well teams execute their ideas." Hevel made an instant impact on debut for Malaysia, scoring against Nepal in Harimau Malaya's opening Asian Cup qualifying match in March. His performance quickly endeared him to fans and showed that he could be a key figure for both club and country. Hevel will be counted upon to lead Malaysia's midfield against Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier in Bukit Jalil on June 10.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- To those who question his eligibility to play for Harimau Malaya, midfielder Hector Hevel has this to say: 'My grandfather hailed from Melaka'. Though he doesn't know much about his late grandfather, the 29-year-old said that was the connection that kickstarted talks which culminated in him playing a starring role for Malaysia in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Nepal in March. For the record, Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. bootstrap slideshow The other six are strikers Rodrigo Holgado and Imanol Machuca and centreback Facundo Garces (from Argentina); defender Jon Irazabal and left-back Gabriel Palmero (Spain); and striker Joao Figueiredo (Brazil).
