
As a museum guard, he stood in silence for a decade, but now world is listening
'All the Beauty in the World' author, former Met security guard Patrick Bringley on art and loss, his unexpected global journey and what's next
Patrick Bringley never imagined that his memoir about working as a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York would resonate globally. But when 'All the Beauty in the World' became an international bestseller, finding especially enthusiastic readers in South Korea, he knew something profound was at play.
'I wrote this book 7,000 miles away, sitting in an apartment in New York City. I had no idea if what I was writing would land with anybody. Because after all, it was about a job where I was mostly by myself, quietly thinking thoughts in solitude,' said Bringley to a packed room of 400 readers at Kyobo Book Center in Seoul, Saturday.
'There is clearly something universal about art, about beauty, about loss, and I'm just so grateful that it's struck a chord here. It's something I never would have expected.'
His debut memoir, published in Korea last year, received an enthusiastic response, selling 250,000 copies and topping the country's bestseller list for the first half of the year.
The 41-year-old author said that while he had traveled extensively within the United States for book talks, his international visits had been limited to few countries, including England, the United Arab Emirates, and now Korea.
'I'm bewildered but there's probably not one simple reason. It's clear that something about the music of the book has resonated in this country. So many people felt a connection with not only the story but with its tone and mood,' said Bringley in an interview with The Korea Herald afterward.
Finding solace in art
Before becoming a museum guard, Bringley worked at The New Yorker, where he once thought he had landed at the top of the world. But when his older brother, Tom, was diagnosed with cancer, and later passed away, Bringley found himself unable to return to the office.
Instead he sought refuge in the quietest place he knew, where time seemed to stand still -- working as a security guard at the Met.
'For 10 years -- almost 2,000 days, I got nothing done. And you know that was the job. If my hands were empty, my head was up and I was looking around to see the way things are, I was doing my job perfectly.'
He said he had done nothing but those long, quiet hours of standing watch for 8-12 hours a day with the museum's greatest masterworks, became a time for profound reflection and appreciation.
In time, Bringley transformed his experience into a story: part portrait of the Met, and part memoir about the loss his family suffered and the solace he found in the museum. He encourages museumgoers to approach art with the same patience.
'My first piece of advice when entering an art museum is to quiet yourself down. And to spend minutes or hours just feeling small.'
But he also believes art should empower, not intimidate.
'There's another way of thinking about art museums because these museums are showcasing the talents and capacities of human beings -- of you and of me. We should feel proud, empowered, challenged and engaged rather than just silent and invisible and small.'
Bringley emphasized that it's important not only to learn about art, but also to learn from it.
'Don't feel intimidated. Don't feel as if there's anyone upstairs that has the right answers. Nobody has the right answers. Everyone is qualified to have their own thoughts.'
Acting debut and next book
Bringley recently took his storytelling a step further, adapting 'All the Beauty in the World' into a one-man play in which he made his debut as playwright and actor. The 80-minute monologue premiered at the Charleston Literary Festival in South Carolina, in November last year.
'Memorizing the lines was very hard,' he admitted. 'And it's different because (in talks) I can be just casual whereas in the play, I'm pretending to be myself from the time when I was a guard. So even though I'm just being myself, it's like having to create a work of art.'
Bringley said the play will soon open in New York this spring for at least two-month run.
He is also in the early stages of writing his second book, which he hopes will explore the act of seeing -- how to truly look at art, how to let it come to you, and how to absorb as opposed to just glancing around.
'I want to begin with art but then bridge out to other things because one of the reasons we look at art is to teach ourselves to see the world out there.'

'Maybe Happy Ending' triumphs with 6 Tony Awards, including best musical
Broadway hit adapted from a Korean musical caps winning streak at Tonys This year's Tony Awards marked a milestone for the musical "Maybe Happy Ending," a heartwarming South Korean robot romance that began its Broadway life at the Belasco Theatre in November 2024. Shen as Claire, the show blends science fiction with poignant emotional realism, bringing to life themes of connection, obsolescence and hope. "The musical's win marks the first successful transition of a small-scale Korean production from Seoul's Daehangno theater district to a major Broadway stage, earning recognition for both its artistic excellence and commercial viability. It also stands as a historic milestone, as it is the first time a Korean creator has won Tony Awards in the musical categories for best book and best score," Choi Seung-youn, a South Korean musical critic and professor, told The Korea Herald on Monday. The sweep by "Maybe Happy Ending" came as little surprise, as the season had already been a remarkable winning streak for the musical, originally written in Korean by playwright and lyricist Park with music by longtime collaborator Aronson. The duo, known for their bilingual productions, saw their work earn six honors at the 69th Annual Drama Desk Awards, including outstanding musical. The show was also named best musical by the 89th New York Drama Critics' Circle and secured two major awards at the 91st Annual Drama League Awards: outstanding production of a musical and outstanding direction of a musical. Formula for success Experts say the success of "Maybe Happy Ending" is largely driven by its powerful universal themes. Speaking last week at a conference at K-Musical Market, an annual showcase of Korean musicals, Sean Patrick Flahaven, chief theatricals executive of Concord Theatricals, remarked on the show's strength in the licensing market: 'It's not so much dependent on being a Korean story as it's a more universal story. So I think that's an important aspect to have — that a compelling specific story can have universality as well — and that kind of universality speaks to success in future licensing.' The musical critic Choi shared that view. 'This achievement owes much to the show's universal themes. The story's portrayal of love and friendship between soon-to-be obsolete beings resonates deeply with audience members,' she said. Choi also emphasized the impact of Aronson's refined and delicate score, particularly his enhancement of jazz numbers to give the music a distinctly 'American' resonance for Broadway audiences. 'Equally important were the meticulous scenic design and direction, which carefully rendered a digital world tailored to the emotional arc of the story,' she said. The show's origins go back to 2014, when it was developed with funding from Korea's Wooran Foundation. It premiered in Seoul in 2016 and ran for five seasons in small theaters in Daehangno, before its English-language adaptation made it to New York's Belasco Theatre in November 2024. During its development, the Broadway production generated anticipation with the involvement of producer Jeffrey Richards, an eight-time Tony Award winner. Park and Aronson, who met in New York when Park was an international student at New York University, worked on four musicals together. The duo's recent project, "Il Tenore," which premiered in Seoul in 2023, also won top honors, including the grand prize and composition award at a major Korean musical awards ceremony. Three decades of effort Though Park is the first Korean national to win a Tony Award in the musical theater category, Korean musicals have been striving, through various forms and evolving strategies, to break into Broadway for more than three decades. The first major push for a Korean musical to reach Broadway began with "The Last Empress," which premiered in 1995 and was invited to New York's Lincoln Center in 1997. Although it wasn't a full-scale commercial run, it marked the first Korean musical to appear on a US Broadway-affiliated stage. Efforts continued with tryouts and workshops in 2002, but a full Broadway debut never materialized. In 2003, the nonverbal hit Nanta became the first Korean production to enter Off-Broadway, later expanding to Las Vegas and London's West End. By the 2010s, Korean companies had shifted focus to investment-driven collaborations, with CJ ENM co-producing Broadway hits such as "Kinky Boots" (2013), "Moulin Rouge!" (2021) and "MJ the Musical" (2022), all of which received multiple Tony Awards. In 2023, "The Great Gatsby," produced by Shin Chun-soo of OD Company, marked a new strategic step, with a Korean producer leading the development and financing of a Broadway-bound production from the ground up. At a press conference for "Squid Game" Season 3 in Seoul on Monday, director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who won best director for a drama series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2022, said he was 'pleasantly surprised' by the news. 'Among the four major awards ceremonies — the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Tonys — I always thought the Tonys were the most distant," he said. "So I am incredibly proud to hear a Korean musical won such prestigious awards there." President Lee Jae-myung also issued a statement celebrating the historic win. Say 'kimchi': How photobooths have filled Korean streets
With tiny photos, Koreans turn moments into memories "Look at the camera and pose within 10 seconds after you hear the sound beep." After the countdown cue begins, put on your best smile, strike a pose, switch it up and let your best angle shine. And get ready for the next shot. After the minute-long shoot, flip through the snap photos, pick your favorites and print them out to take home. This is a scene at a self-service photo booth where anyone can snap fun shots and instantly print out bookmark-sized keepsakes that capture the moment. The photos are taken using automated cameras, lighting and backdrops. These unmanned photo "studios" are open 24 hours, meaning you can pop in whenever it strikes your fancy. Instructions are available in English, Japanese and Chinese as well. Walk through Seongsu-dong or Hongdae and you will be struck by how many of these unmanned photo studios there are, usually crowded with people casually stepping inside to snap memories as if it were a daily routine. Among the many studio booths, global selfie brand Life Four Cuts leads the pack. The name is a reference to its "four-cut" photo service — similar to traditional passport photos, with four snapshots framed in a vertical strip, with two printed copies costing 4,000 won ($2.91), 8,000 won for four copies and 12,000 won for six prints. Ha Yoo-ra, 20, a university student in Seoul, is among those who stepped into a four-cut photo booth with two friends for a fun memory. "(The three of us) have been friends since elementary school, but somehow never took a nice photo together, believe it or not, until now. So we decided to have a little makeover and dress nicely to mark our years of friendship. One day, I hope we will reminisce about the memories of the day we took the photo, what we ate and how we looked," Ha told The Korea Herald. "Also, the self-photo booths edit the pictures by making our skin look better and brighter, which is cost-friendly for college students," Ha added. To stand out in the fast-growing photo booth market, many brands are teaming up with K-pop stars, actors, popular cartoon characters and even sports figures. These time-limited designs add to the appeal by creating a one-of-a-kind experience. For example, Photoism opened an artist frame on May 26 that allows users to take photos with a frame featuring singer-songwriter IU to mark the release of her new EP "A Flower Bookmark, Pt. 3." The special edition frame will only be available until June 30. Yoshi from the K-pop group Treasure is another frame option available at Photoism. Released to mark his May 15 birthday, the frame will be available through June 15. Park Jun-seo, a college graduate who is an avid fan of boy band Enhypen, visited Photoism in November last year to to be in the same frame as her favorite idol. "Honestly, I think it is embarrassing to enter a self-studio photo booth to take a picture of yourself, but I wanted to be in the same picture with my idol. It wasn't about how pretty I looked in the picture but about the fact that I printed a photo of me standing next to my favorite singer, even if it was just a photo frame," Park explained. For sports fans, exclusive photo frames featuring baseball players from all 10 KBO teams are available through a partnership with the Korea Baseball Organization during the baseball season. During the baseball sesason fans can capture fun and personalized memories, posing "next" to their favorite player. The special edition frames are available through October. The photo-booth craze has also spread overseas. Korea's Life Four Cuts and Photomatic are now available in Singapore and London while local companies have jumped in on the market in Indonesia with homegrown brands like Photograms and Palette ID making big waves. "These pictures come with great quality at a budget-friendly price, which is why the MZ generation are preferring self-photo studios," a senior official overseeing marketing at Life Four Cuts told The Korea Herald. A total of 120 million visits have been made to Life Four Cuts since its launch in 2017 and the company runs around 410 stores in Korea, according to the company. Another reason driving the trend is that the pictures come out in formats that are easy to share on social media, according to the official. Also, limited-edition photo frames could trigger FOMO among people and lead to more repeat visits for photos with different celebrities in the frame. "The trend also aligns with the desire to capture and document everyday moments. With stylish frames and creative setups, these photo booths let anyone step in, take photos and express themselves comfortably and without feeling self-conscious," the official said.
