Rung traders seek revival of India-China trade at Lipulekh border

Time of India5 hours ago

Pithoragarh: Traders from the Rung community, who have historically engaged in India-China border trade through Lipulekh Pass, are demanding its resumption and have expressed deep disappointment over its continued suspension this year.
Border trade has remained shut since 2019.
"Trade between India and Tibet through Lipulekh has been ongoing since ancient times. Though it was halted after the 1962 India-China war, it resumed in 1992," said Daulat Singh Raypa, general secretary of India-China Border Trade Association. The
Kailash Mansarovar yatra
, which also passes through Lipulekh, began in 1981. Both the pilgrimage and trade continued uninterrupted until 2019, when operations were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While the yatra has been permitted to resume this year, border trade remains suspended. "We were hopeful trade would also restart once the yatra resumed, especially since Lipulekh is now connected by road," said Raypa. The construction of the Tawaghat–Lipulekh road was completed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2022. "We were very enthusiastic because road connectivity reduces both time and costs and makes trade more viable," he added.

Since the Chinese govt granted permission to Nepali Rung traders to resume border trade in 2024, "the Indian Rung community must also be allowed without delay," said Jeevan Singh, president of the traders' union. "We met central ministers and urged them to restart the border trade," he added.
In 2019, 40 traders left unsold goods in godowns and shops, with an estimated Rs 2 crore worth of items stuck in the Chinese mandi at Taklakot, said Singh.

Virgo Daily Horoscope Today, June 21, 2025: Create, don't just try to prove

The stars encourage you to gently shift your energy from proving to simply creating. You often carry the weight of showing how capable and helpful you are. But today, that pressure can be replaced by the joy of doing something because it feels right—not because it must be perfect. Let your focus be less about performance and more about purpose. Even small efforts rooted in meaning will bring inner peace. Your quiet strength is already enough. Let it express freely. Virgo Love Horoscope Today Love today asks you to connect without trying to 'fix' the moment. If you're in a relationship, avoid trying to solve every emotion or explain every feeling. Sometimes, your calm presence is the best support. If single, you may meet someone who connects with your mind first—don't rush the bond. Just being open is enough. Let love be gentle. You don't need to earn affection by being perfect. You are already worthy of care and emotional closeness. Virgo Career Horoscope Today In your career, step into your own creative rhythm without comparing yourself to others. Someone may expect a quick response, but it's okay to take time and think. A new task may come that suits your quiet attention to detail. Take it on with confidence. Focus on what excites your mind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Even behind the scenes, your efforts matter. Lead by example, and trust that quality will always stand out. Virgo Money Horoscope Today Money feels calm, but your mind may still overanalyse. Instead of counting every rupee today, think of how to make your financial habits lighter and smoother. A small change in routine—like tracking your expenses or reducing one unnecessary item—can open new space. If someone asks for financial help, think before answering, and don't act from guilt. You don't need more—just smarter choices rooted in self-respect. Virgo Health Horoscope Today Your health may be affected by emotional tension or silent worry. If you've been sitting for too long or skipping small meals, your digestion may suffer. Take breaks, even for five minutes, and focus on deep breathing. Avoid cold or overly processed food today. Herbal teas or warm water will help settle your system. If sleep has been light or disturbed, reduce screen time and let your body relax in soft light. Restore through gentle routines, not force. "90s decade proves who misused public money": Chirag Paswan slams RJD

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 20 (ANI): Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Friday slammed RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and dismissed his claims of state administration 'forcibly' gathering people for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally, saying the RJD had no moral ground to speak of public welfare. 'The 90s decade proves who misused the public money. The 90s were a decade in which the people of Bihar had to leave their homes, villages, and businesses and leave Bihar.' He emphasised that under the current administration, there has been a positive shift. 'Gradually, reverse migration has started in Bihar. Around 25 lakh people have returned to Bihar after COVID-19... This is a double-engine government, not a jungle-raj...' Meanwhile, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha hailed PM Modi's visit to Siwan as a momentous occasion. 'It was a very historic way people welcomed and greeted the Prime Minister was tremendous... this is a historic day for the people of Bihar,' said Deputy CM. Apart from this, in a swift rebuttal Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary also questioned the credibility of Tejashwi's claims, saying, 'Is it Lalu Prasad Yadav's regime that the professors are not getting salaries? Has any government employee claimed that they are not getting their salaries? Tejashwi Yadav should reveal who is providing him with such information... In the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, Tejashwi Yadav will face a defeat greater than that experienced by Lalu Prasad Yadav.' Notably, PM Modi during his visit to Siwan on Friday flagged off a state-of-the-art locomotive built at the Marhowra Plant, for export to the Republic of Guinea, under the 'Make in India' initiative. The plant became the first export locomotive manufactured in this factory. They are equipped with high-horsepower engines, advanced AC propulsion systems, microprocessor-based control systems, and ergonomic cab designs, incorporating technologies like regenerative braking. PM also flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Patliputra and Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah. (ANI)

CM says ONGC to permanently cap leaking well in Sivasagar, US team in Assam

1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will permanently cap its leaking crude oil well in Sivasagar district after two emergency efforts failed to contain the gas blowout. "Plan A and B failed to control the escalating gas leak crisis at ONGC's Rudrasagar Field in Sivasagar. Today morning ONGC chairman informed me that the company will activate Plan C, which is permanent capping of the well for controlling the gas leak," Sarma said. "Capping of the well will begin tomorrow and will be carried out in consultation with the US experts. It is expected to be completed within the next four or five days," Sarma said. A three-member team from Cudd Well Control, USA, arrived in Sivasagar on Friday afternoon to assist with the crisis. The involvement of the US specialists marks a significant escalation in containment efforts, as nearly 350 families remain displaced in relief camps due to the prolonged emergency. Multiple containment attempts, including several "junk shot" operations by ONGC's crisis management team, have failed to stop the hazardous gas discharge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The US team, known for its expertise in well control and blowouts, began site assessments immediately upon arrival. "The international experts were given a detailed briefing on the situation and past efforts. They've conducted a firsthand assessment of the site and will begin their specialised intervention on Saturday morning," said a senior ONGC official. Following high-level consultations with ONGC leadership, the American team proceeded to the site for a detailed situational analysis to determine the advanced techniques required to cap the well safely. Meanwhile, ONGC engineers have been preparing for the capping effort by clearing non-essential equipment and developing an alternate access route to facilitate safer movement around the volatile zone. The ongoing crisis has raised concerns over environmental fallout and the wellbeing of displaced residents. The Sivasagar district administration continues to coordinate with ONGC to support for the 350 affected families staying in relief camps. "We are providing all necessary assistance to the families and remain in close coordination with ONGC's emergency team. Our top priority is public safety and supporting the well-control operations," said Sivasagar deputy commissioner Ayush Garg. The Rudrasagar oil field is a key production asset for ONGC in Assam, but operations have been halted while containment efforts continue.
