2025 PERMAI Festival: Opportunity to introduce Perlis agricultural products to broader audience
KANGAR: Through the Perlis Mango and Agricultural Industry (PERMAI) Festival 2025, agricultural products from Perlis have the opportunity to be introduced to a broader audience, while simultaneously raising public awareness of the agricultural sector's significance and its positive contribution to the national economy.
The Raja Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, said the festival serves as a vital platform for farmers, breeders, and fishermen in the state to showcase their products and exchange knowledge on best practices within their respective fields.
'The PERMAI programme is held as a form of recognition and a marketing platform for agricultural products by the farming community in Perlis, with the aim of commercialising them on a large scale,' he said when opening the 2025 PERMAI Festival last night., being held from May 2 to 4, last night.
Meanwhile, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin expressed his pride upon learning that the Harumanis industry has been expanding rapidly, now involving more than 2,600 entrepreneurs and covering a cultivated area of 1,745 hectares.
'This achievement not only provides economic benefits to the people but also strengthens Perlis' image as a dynamic agricultural state,' said the Ruler.
He said that farmers, breeders, and agro-entrepreneurs should now begin adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technology in their daily operations, including the use of machine learning to monitor crop health and smart spraying systems to improve yields and product quality.
'I am confident that continuous efforts to modernise and empower this sector will play an important role in ensuring food security, driving the economy, creating jobs and preserving the environment so that the benefits can be enjoyed by the people,' he said.

Durian season begins: How to feast safely and where to get the best deals
Overindulging can lead to that dreaded 'heaty' feeling, often marked by sore throats, mouth ulcers or even mild dehydration. Photo for illustrative purposes only. (Canva) DURIAN season has officially kicked off in Malaysia, and with the King of Fruits flooding markets nationwide, it's the perfect time to indulge in this thorny delicacy. However, as any seasoned durian fan knows, overindulging can lead to that dreaded 'heaty' feeling, often marked by sore throats, mouth ulcers or even mild dehydration. To enjoy durian without the downsides, here are some tried-and-true tips: Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after eating durian to help your body balance the heatiness. Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Combining these with durian can strain your digestion and increase internal heat. Pair with cooling foods: Some swear by drinking coconut water or eating mangosteen (dubbed the "queen of fruits") to balance durian's effects. Moderation is key: As tempting as it is, avoid consuming too much in one sitting, especially in this hot, dry spell. With the heatwave persisting across parts of Malaysia, taking care while enjoying your seasonal favourites is more important than ever. Where to get your fix – Meet Syabab Fresh Amid the durian frenzy, Syabab Fresh is emerging as a go-to name for quality durians at fair prices. Known primarily for its thriving presence on TikTok Shop, Syabab Fresh made the leap to online retail in January 2023. Among the products that stole the limelight were salt belacan, honey belacan, pekasam sepat and lampam, as well as cordial Harumanis – which is synonymous with Perlis' identity and uniqueness.-Bernama photo TAWAU (May 11): The Jualan MADANI Koperasi held in conjunction with the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 Sabah has received an overwhelming and encouraging response, said Malaysian Cooperative Commission (Sabah), Malisah Sinin, senior assistant director (Development). She said the sale, which is organised by the commission, offers 51 essential goods at prices up to 30 percent lower than market rates. 'This sale aims to help ease the burden of rising living costs, and we've seen a very positive response from the Tawau community. Besides reducing household expenses, we also aim to boost the local economy. 'The three-day sale held offers essential items such as rice, sugar, eggs and cooking oil, as well as personal care and household cleaning products,' she told Bernama. Malisah added that the Jualan MADANI Koperasi, operated by Koperasi Emas Tawau Sabah as the main coordinator, plays a vital role in delivering essential goods to the community through a mobile sales approach. 'We want to expand the role of cooperatives as distribution centres for essential goods, reaching every corner of the country so people can truly benefit from the government's price control and subsidy initiatives,' she said. Malisah added that the commission brought together 19 cooperatives to participate in this edition of the sale. One of the beneficiaries, 38-year-old food vendor Nur Mastura Hamzah, said she managed to save nearly RM200 in business capital by purchasing supplies through the Jualan MADANI Koperasi. 'This is a big help for small entrepreneurs like me. Previously, the rising cost of raw ingredients forced me to cut down on production, but with the lower prices offered here, I can now increase my output,' she said. A resident of Taman Sri Tawau, Nur Mastura, said that the affordable prices allow her to maintain her pricing, enabling her customers to continue enjoying her products. Md Zainuddin Umar, 62, a retired civil servant from Bandar Sri Indah, described the Jualan MADANI Koperasi as a lifeline for pensioners and hoped that it would be held regularly in Tawau. 'With a limited pension and rising living costs, programmes like this are highly anticipated. I bought two months' worth of essentials with the same budget I usually spend for one month at regular stores,' he said. What impressed him most was that the quality of goods offered was on par with those sold in supermarkets, but at significantly lower prices.-Bernama Next Article Over 10,000 attend Tawau Mega Concert

Boost for development, economy: Nizam
Published on: Sunday, May 11, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 11, 2025 Text Size: Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan THE 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) serves as a development catalyst and has the potential to boost the local economy, said Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. The Apas Assemblyman said the initiative delivers government services to the people to help them raise their living standards. 'When large-scale programmes like this are brought to Tawau, we get upgrades in many aspects — particularly in street lighting... roads and other infrastructure. It also creates business opportunities for local entrepreneurs in the district and surrounding areas to set up stalls to promote their products. 'Although PMR runs for only three days (May 9 to 11), the benefits to the people do not end when the programme concludes. I hope all ministries and agencies involved will continue to serve and support those needing various guidance,' he said. He thanked the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (Pacu), the Prime Minister's Office and the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (Kuskop) for choosing Tawau to host the programme this year. 'The programme was held in Kota Kinabalu last year. Many people from the east coast of Sabah could not attend due to the distance (about 450km),' he said, urging Tawau residents to take the opportunity to attend the event and get information on the services offered by federal and state agencies. 'PMR significantly benefits urban and rural communities by providing the public direct access to government agency services. This programme serves as a platform for interaction between the people and the Government while directly conveying the principles of the Madani policies,' he added. Meanwhile, over 100 products specially flown from Perlis are featured at the 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) here, including garam belacan (fruit dip), belacan madu (shrimp paste), fermented fish and cordial made from Harumanis mango. Administrative Assistant for the Entrepreneurship Portfolio at the Perlis State Secretary's Office, Syazana Afiqah Nahar, said the Sabah PMR is an ideal platform to showcase Perlis's products and heritage to Sabahans and promote the State's tourism industry in conjunction with Visit Perlis 2024–2025 campaign. 'Among the products are various types of belacan…and Harumanis cordial, produced by the Koperasi Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti Anak Istimewa Perlis, a cooperative which plays an active role in supporting the development of children with special needs and disabilities in Perlis,' she said. Syazana Afiqah said they are also promoting tourist attractions in Perlis through various souvenirs, including fridge magnets that highlight the unique features of these locations. 'We hope programmes like this can provide an opportunity for the people of Sabah to get to know Perlis better,' she said. A visitor, Nuri Juliana Majuntis, 45, said she bought the fermented lampam fish, which brought back the nostalgia that reminds her of the visit to the State two years ago. 'I love Perlis fermented lampam fish. The taste is unique and unlike other fermented fish. I'm so happy to be able to buy it here again. I've purchased a lot to keep and share with my family,' she added. Irmawati Abdul Kadir, 38, said she was interested in the Harumanis cordial, which she claimed had the authentic taste of the state's famous Harumanis mango. 'When I heard that it's made from the famous Harumanis mango from Perlis, I immediately wanted to buy it. Unfortunately, the stock is limited. I'll try to order it online,' she said. The booth, managed by the Perlis Economic Planning Division, is in the sales section of PMR 2025. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
