Capital curling event returns after six years
Some 24 teams took to the ice at Curl Edinburgh to contest the Edinburgh International Curlers Gathering
The competition returned after a gap of six years and the demand for places from international teams was high, with eight teams from North America, nine from Europe and seven from Scotland.
After the initial phase of 3×6 end games teams were ranked 1 to 24 and redrawn into six new divisions, for three more six-end games.
On the concluding day each division was undecided until all games were played.
Each of the six division winners were presented with crystal glasses, etched with the competition name and year as a momento plus extra prizes.
The tradition of presenting a friendship quaich to one team was continued in memory of Penicuik CC member Ronnie Hope who passed away on 2022, and was a great supporter of the Gathering and a friend to many of the competing teams.

The Czechia team Curling Brno Legia were presented with the quaich.
Team Denver from USA was the overall winner, topping Division One. They were presented with the new Gathering Quaich, which will be engraved with their team name.
They received engraved mini curling stones, engraved glasses, plus a selection of Moonwake Beer from the sponsors.
The Edinburgh team, Game of Stones, finished in second place and also received Moonwake Beer.
The event also proved a major social occasion with a dinner and ceilidh held in the Watsonian pavilion at Myreside during which auction lots included a jacket and broom from Bruce Mouat donated before flying out to Canada where and his rink excelled by winning the world championship.
All told £700 was raised and will go to hosting future gatherings along with a further £1043 from various sources.

The Mets chased Senzatela after he walked Alonso and Jeff McNeil to open the sixth, which brought in Jake Bird for the bullpen. Bird hit Tyrone Taylor to load the bases but recovered. He caught Brett Baty looking for the first out, went 3-1 on Francisco Alvarez before striking him out and then fanned Ronny Mauricio on three pitches to get out of the jam without allowing a run. New York broke through against Tyler Kinley in the seventh. With one out Marte and Soto singled up the middle and Alonso followed with a double to the gap in left-center field to bring home both runners. The Rockies tied it in the seventh when Sam Hilliard tripled to right and scored on Moniak's single. Free agent RB J.K. Dobbins visits Broncos
June 5 - Free agent running back J.K. Dobbins was set to visit with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, coach Sean Payton confirmed at the team's offseason program. Dobbins, 26, played last season for the division rival Los Angeles Chargers, who applied an unrestricted free agent tender on him in April. The tender is worth about $1.1 million, according to ESPN, and would allow the Chargers to count Dobbins toward the compensatory draft pick formula for 2026 if he signs elsewhere before July 22. "We'll have a chance to visit with him, and then we'll see where it goes," Payton said. The Broncos' running back depth chart currently includes second-round pick RJ Harvey, second-year back Audric Estime and veteran Jaleel McLaughlin. "Just another good football player that we've seen first-hand (that) I've seen for a while," Payton said. "Just the importance of that position group. We really like the group right now we're working with. "It's just another opportunity to possibly bring in another good football player to help us win." Dobbins led the Chargers in rushing last season with 905 yards and nine touchdowns on 195 carries. Avalanche ink pending UFA Brock Nelson to 3-year deal
June 4 - Forward Brock Nelson signed a three-year contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday. Financial terms were not disclosed by the team, however multiple media outlets reported it was worth a total of $22.5 million and carries an average annual value of $7.5 million. Nelson, 33, recorded 56 points (26 goals, 30 assists) in 80 games split between the New York Islanders and Avalanche in the 2024-25 season, He was acquired by the Avalanche on March 6 after spending 11-plus seasons with the Islanders. "My family and I are excited to be staying in Colorado," Nelson said. "Having spent my entire career with one organization, we weren't totally sure what to expect when we arrived in Denver. But getting the opportunity to play for the Avalanche, to compete with a great group of teammates in that locker room, and in front of the tremendous fans at Ball Arena, we knew this was where we wanted to stay." Nelson could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. "We're thrilled to have reached an agreement with Brock to keep him in Colorado for the next three seasons," Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said. "He's been a great center in this league for a long time, and he brings professionalism and a dedicated work ethic on and off the ice. We think he's a great fit and is a stabilizing presence to our second-line center role with his size and ability to touch all areas of the ice. "We're excited to see what his contributions will be over a larger sample size with the Avalanche." Nelson has totaled 587 points (301 goals, 286 assists) in 920 career games.
