‘Laughed it off' – Joseph Parker reveals Usyk's reaction to face-to-face challenge rival opens door to Fury trilogy

JOSEPH PARKER has revealed he had a frank conversation with Oleksandr Usyk after meeting him at a recent bareknuckle boxing event.
The pair were in attendance at Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship's inaugural event in Italy in late April and had some of the best seats in the house for the Florence fisticuffs.

Former WBO heavyweight king Parker saw a golden opportunity to try to convince the undefeated Usyk to share the ring with him before he calls time on his Hall-of-Fame career.
But the best heavyweight of the modern era cruelly dashed New Zealander's hopes of trading heavy leather with him with a James Bond villain-esque laugh.
Speaking exclusively to SunSport thanks to Casino Hawks, the 33-year-old Kiwi said: "I saw Uysk in Italy last week.
"And I walked up to him and said,' Hey, you got two fights left.

"'Why don't you fight Dubois and fight me?'
"He just laughed it off. He didn't really reply."
Parker's disappointment at missing out on the chance to share the ring with Usyk was compounded when the former two-weight undisputed champion opened the door to a trilogy fight with Tyson Fury.
He continued: "And then now, I'm seeing that he's calling out Tyson and [Anthony] Joshua for his last fight in his career.

"Maybe he's looking for the bigger and sort of financial-making fights. I'm not quite sure."
Parker is in pole position to fight the winner of Usyk's rematch with Daniel Dubois at Wembley on July 19, which will be for all the heavyweight marbles, as he's he mandatory challenger for the WBO strap.

But he's refusing to put the cart before the horse, saying: "I know Frank Warren said a few things that I might be next to fight for undisputed unification.
"But there were no discussions. And for me, it's just words at the moment.
"It'd be nice to get something in writing and to get something solid.
"But at the moment, it's just words.
"If it can happen, I'll be extremely over the moon."

Max Verstappen's blunt comment on F1 ban says it all after George Russell U-turn
Max Verstappen is one penalty point away from incurring a Formula 1 race ban ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, following his collision with George Russell in Barcelona Max Verstappen said it would "not be the end of the world" if he were banned from taking part in a Formula 1 race. That's despite his title defence already looking difficult with the Red Bull racer 49 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri. Verstappen has 11 penalty points on his racing licence, having been given three last time out at the Spanish Grand Prix. That, alongside a 10-second time penalty, was his punishment for driving into George Russell towards the end of the Barcelona race. It means he is one more penalty point away from becoming only the second F1 driver to be banned under the current system, after Kevin Magnussen last year. Not that he appears to be too concerned about the prospect of being forced to sit out a race. Asked if he felt being so close to a ban in might change the way he and others will battle on track at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen said: "It's there, right? There's nothing that you can do about it. "So we just focus ahead and try to do the best that we can every single time. It's not changing my approach – I cannot speak for others. If you look at it in general, missing a race is not ideal, but it's not the end of the world." Russell said in the aftermath of that Barcelona incident that he felt Verstappen had deliberately driven into his Mercedes. Speaking in Montreal, the Brit said he had changed his view on that, but showed little sympathy for his Red Bull rival's predicament. He said: "If [Verstappen] gets to 12 points, [a ban] wouldn't be unjust. At the end of the day, that's why the penalty points are there. If you keep driving recklessly you will accumulate points, and get punished with a race ban. You've got it in your own hands and it doesn't go without risk. "He was trying to run me off the road. I don't think he was trying to intentionally crash into me. He wanted to just sort of scare me a bit, but he just misjudged it. Again, it wasn't going to scare me, it was just all a bit surprising." Verstappen issued a statement the morning after the Barcelona race in which he admitted he was wrong to have collided with Russell. That social media post did not include an apology, though Russell says he is not after one and was simply surprised to see Verstappen shoulder the blame. "I'm not looking for an apology. His actions cost him and they benefited me, so I should be almost thanking him. Obviously, I'd be feeling very differently if it took me out of the race. But it is good to see that he took accountability. I was a bit surprised about that."

Thomas Frank appointed Tottenham boss on three-year deal
Thomas Frank has been confirmed as Tottenham's new head coach on a three-year deal. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy moved swiftly for former Brentford boss Frank after they dismissed Ange Postecoglou only 16 days on from Europa League glory. Following negotiations with Brentford during the past week over Frank's release clause and backroom staff, the 51-year-old has been announced as Tottenham head coach and will bring with him Justin Cochrane, who will return to the club where he started his coaching journey more than a decade ago. Postecoglou's dismissal sparked a flurry of tributes from Spurs players and Frank's initial task in north London will be to stabilise a shocked dressing room. However, the Danish coach has gained a reputation for excellent man-management skills during his impressive seven-year spell in charge of Brentford, where he won 136 of his 317 matches as head coach. After a rocky start, Frank turned Brentford into one of the most entertaining teams in the Championship and clinched play-off success at Wembley in 2021 – despite the departures of Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma. Ex-Brondby boss Frank showed his supreme adaptability once in the top flight as his previously free-scoring side switched to a disciplined and organised unit, which frequently changed between a 4-3-3 and a 3-5-2 system. It enabled Frank to establish Brentford as a Premier League regular despite a modest budget and even the loss of Ivan Toney last summer failed to halt their momentum. During the 2024-25 campaign, Brentford recorded their best tally of top-flight wins (16) and goals (66) to secure a 10th-placed finish which further caught the attention of Tottenham. An official approach from Spurs was made on Monday before negotiations concluded on Thursday after an agreement had been reached over Frank's release clause – reported to be in the region of £10m – and his backroom staff. This move will also reunite Frank with Andreas Georgson, who spent a year at Brentford as a set-piece coach and now moves from Manchester United to Spurs, and technical director Johan Lange, who worked with Frank at Lyngby in their native Denmark and tried to bring him to Aston Villa in 2022. Even though Frank has failed to win any major silverware, he can change that when he manages Spurs for the first time competitively on August 13 in the UEFA Super Cup against Champions League winners Paris St Germain. Later on Thursday night, Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero sent out a cryptic post on Instagram, saying: 'Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons. 'From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist. 'Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters. I wish you the best because you deserve the best, and thank you for everything.'
