Platense reach Argentine Apertura final after 1-0 win over San Lorenzo
Platense booked their place in the final of the Argentine Apertura competition with a 1-0 win at San Lorenzo on Sunday, thanks to a second-half goal from substitute Franco Zapiola.
Platense, who beat River Plate in the quarter-finals, will face Huracan in the final after they overcame Independiente 6–5 in a thrilling penalty shootout on Saturday.
San Lorenzo struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, and their progress was further hindered when Ezequiel Cerutti was forced off due to injury as the game was halted for a few minutes.
Platense pressed hard, with efforts from Augusto Lotti, Ronaldo Martinez and Vicente Taborda testing San Lorenzo's defence and goalkeeper Orlando Gill made some fine saves, ensuring the home side remained in contention.
The visitors finally broke the deadlock through Zapiola, who came on for Lotti in the 70th minute, and two minutes later, scored the winner following a corner kick.
"Netting the goal was a huge thrill. Today, we are wearing a shirt bearing a patch in memory of the late Pope Francis, and that means a lot to us as Argentines. We will wear it in every game now. I think it helped us today," Zapiola told TNT Sports. REUTERS

At the French Open, only one trophy but so many triumphs
Sport isn't fair, this is the plain truth, this is the deal athletes accept. Not everyone makes it, not everyone's haircut like Carlos Alcaraz's makes the news, not everyone's bank balance swells like Novak Djokovic's (US$187,086,939 or S$241,500,000, at last count), not everyone gets on centre court. Players shrug, it's OK, but what everyone desires is a chance. That's all. To be somebody. To get a shot. To be one of 128 in the French Open draw. This is harder than you think. The clay in Paris, 80 tonnes of it, comes from a single brick factory, but talent comes from everywhere and feels as omnipresent as the dust. The lowest-ranked player on the WTA Tour is No. 1,402, on the ATP Tour it's No. 2,133, and it's a suffocating, hardscrabble, physically punishing life. A player once spoke about cutting costs by sleeping in a brothel but didn't quite fully explain the economics of it. Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

The takeover has been approved by the Scottish Football Association, Rangers said in a statement, adding that the new leadership has committed to invest 20 million pounds ($26.95 million) into the club. "This new ownership phase represents a significant step forward for Rangers FC," said Rangers chairman Fraser Thornton. "The incoming shareholders bring not only funding but also deep expertise in strategic planning, infrastructure development, and sporting excellence." Rangers finished their domestic campaign second behind champions Celtic for the fourth consecutive year, last winning the league in 2020-21. Both teams are tied on 55 championships. "This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches," health insurance tycoon Cavenagh said. "We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance. Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs - at the top." Rangers will compete in the Champions League second qualifying round for a chance to play in next season's competition. West Ham fined for homophobic chanting during Chelsea game
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - West Ham United v Leicester City - London Stadium, London, Britain - February 27, 2025 General view of corner flags inside the stadium before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge/File Photo REUTERS West Ham United have been handed a fine of 120,000 pounds ($161,700) for homophobic chanting by their fans during their 2-1 Premier League loss at Chelsea on February 3, the Football Association said on Friday. An independent Regulatory Commission has also imposed an action plan on West Ham, the FA said. "It was alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters) did not behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, indecent or insulting way with either an express or implied reference to sexual orientation," the FA said in a statement. The club admitted the charge of misconduct, in relation to abusive, offensive, discriminatory, homophobic chanting by supporters. "The club has a zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory, abusive and insulting behaviour, and those identified will, in addition to any criminal charges they face, be issued with club bans," the East London club said. West Ham finished 14th with 43 points in the Premier League. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
