The 2025 BMW 540i xDrive is Probably More Car Than You Need
Our first encounter with BMW's all-new 5 Series came last year when we tested the four-cylinder-powered 530i. We came away impressed by its sub-6-second 0-60 mph time and excellent braking performance. Along with sharp styling and a significantly upgraded and luxurious interior, the new 5 Series seemed to have everything going for it ... except driver engagement. While we couldn't deny it's an excellent luxury sedan, it just wasn't a very fun one, regardless of what the test numbers said.
Which left us wondering, with a turbocharged six-cylinder under the hood, would the 2025 BMW 540i xDrive provide the extra kick we needed? Only one way to find out, so we hit the track and the results were ... surprising.
Power everywhere
The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder in the 540i xDrive puts out 375 horsepower, a full 120 hp more than the 530i. So it's no surprise the 540i crushes its little brother in acceleration. The BMW hit 60 mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds and breezed through the quarter mile in 12.6 seconds at 109.3 mph. For context, that's 1.4 seconds quicker than the 530i to 60 mph and 1.5 seconds quicker through the quarter mile with a trap speed that's a full 12.4 mph faster.

Max Verstappen blames frustration for a 'move that was not right' after colliding with Russell
Max Verstappen said Monday that frustration caused 'a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened', a day after he initially seemed unrepentant over his collision with George Russell at Formula 1's Spanish Grand Prix. Verstappen had been asked by his Red Bull team to give up a place to Russell following an earlier incident between the two drivers when he hit Russell's Mercedes. The race stewards ruled Verstappen had 'suddenly accelerated' before the collision and Russell said it 'felt very deliberate'. The stewards gave Verstappen a 10-second penalty which dropped him from fifth to 10th and left him 49 points off standings leader Oscar Piastri, who won Sunday's race. 'We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out. Our tire choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fueled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened,' Verstappen wrote on Instagram. 'I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you (at the next race) in Montreal.' Initially in the aftermath of Sunday's race, Verstappen had said that 'next time I will bring a tissue', responding to Russell claiming he set a poor example for young drivers. A series of setbacks The collision followed a series of setbacks for Verstappen, who had been in third and pressuring the two McLaren drivers in front before the safety car came out. Red Bull decided to bring Verstappen into the pits for fresh tires, even though the only ones he had left were slower hard-compound tires, a type that no other driver used. At the restart, Verstappen lost grip and was overtaken by Charles Leclerc, whose Ferrari made contact with Verstappen's Red Bull. Neither driver was ruled at fault for that. Verstappen then went off the track while defending against Russell and Red Bull asked Verstappen to give up the place to Russell, apparently because the team expected Verstappen would be given a penalty. The stewards later ruled they wouldn't have taken action against the Dutch driver for that incident. Risking a suspension Verstappen needs to be careful in the next two races because the penalty for the collision with Russell also brought him penalty points on his licence, taking him to 11 in the last 12 months. Drivers get a one-race suspension if they hit 12 points in a year. Two of those points expire at the end of the month, but until then Verstappen needs to get through the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix without any further penalty points. ___ AP auto racing:

Tesla's sale in Norway rises 213% year-on-year in May
OSLO (Reuters) -Tesla's sale of new cars in Norway rose by 213% in May from a year ago to 2,600 vehicles, registration data showed on Monday, boosted by a revamped Model Y compact SUV, the country's best-selling automobile in each of the last three years. Year-to-date sales rose by 8.3% from the first five months of 2024. Nine out of ten new cars sold in Norway last year were fully electric vehicles, and the EV share of sales year-to-date stands at 92.7%, the Norwegian Road Federation said, bringing it close to a goal of phasing out diesel and petrol automobiles. It redirects air from within the vehicle back into the AC system to be cooled again. This keeps the cabin cooler for longer. When you press it, your air conditioner will limit or shut off the amount of outside air it brings into the cabin. Your AC unit will continue to circulate already-cooled air within the vehicle itself. This can help maintain optimal temperatures quicker than if you were relying on outside air. It's also helpful during times when heavy pollutants are in the outside environment. Like pollen, smog, or smoke from nearby fires. Lou's Car Care explains: "The key to using the recirculate button is understanding when it should be used. If you need to cool down your car quickly, only use your AC system to pull in outside air. "This will cool off faster than recycled air. The recirculation button will reduce the amount of external contaminants entering your car. This is useful while driving at highway speeds or in areas with high levels of pollution. "Another useful tip is activating the recirculate mode right after starting your car. Let it run for some time before turning off the function. This the inside temperatures become more comfortable. "And allows your AC system more time to cool down without having to pull in hot outside air while doing so. This can also reduce outside pollutants from entering your vehicle. And improve passenger comfort and safety."
