Barbie's about to get a brain — and it's powered by OpenAI
Barbie might get an AI upgrade. Mattel, the maker of Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Uno, has teamed up with OpenAI to bring artificial intelligence to its iconic toy brands, the companies announced on Thursday. By using OpenAI's technology, Mattel will "bring the magic of AI to age-appropriate play experiences with an emphasis on innovation, privacy, and safety," the California-based toy manufacturer said in a press release on Thursday. While details are still under wraps, the first AI-powered product is expected to drop later this year. Mattel isn't handing over its intellectual property in the deal. The company retains full control over the products being developed, said Josh Silverman, Mattel's chief franchise officer, in an interview with Bloomberg. Talks with OpenAI first began late last year, he added. It's not just about the toys. Mattel will also incorporate OpenAI tools like ChatGPT Enterprise into its business operations, the toy company said. Mattel shares rose 1.8% to $19.59 earlier Thursday, before edging down to $19.30 in after-hours trading. Mattel and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Toy sales slow The move comes as toy manufacturers face weaker demand, with consumers pulling back on spending amid uncertainty over President Donald Trump's trade policy. Mattel withdrew its annual forecast last month and said it would increase prices for some products in the US to offset Trump's tariffs. The company also said it would "adjust" its promotional activity to save costs. Its cost-savings target for the year rose to $80 million from $60 million, Anthony DiSilvestro, Mattel's chief financial officer, said in an earnings call last month. Over the past year, Mattel has leaned on entertainment — including movies, TV shows, and mobile games — to help offset a slowdown in toy sales. OpenAI, meanwhile, has recently inked partnerships with major consumer brands, including Starbucks. The coffee giant is rolling out a new OpenAI-powered tool called Green Dot Assist to help baristas remember drink recipes and suggest food pairings. Built using Microsoft Azure OpenAI, the tool runs on an iPad behind the counter in stores and will work as an in-store virtual assistant for baristas, Starbucks said in a press release Tuesday.

I tried 5 new AI tools this week — these are the ones I've started using daily
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of AI tools out there. Despite this, I end up using the same small collection each day. This isn't necessarily a surprise. Those few tools are made by those with massive training sets (and massively deep pockets). But that doesn't mean there isn't any value in trying something new. I spent the past week looking outside of AI's mainstream, trying a few new AI tools to see if anything would make it into my daily routine. These aren't all new AI tools, but they are new to me! Some of these have been going for years but through new updates or features, have found themselves back into my eyesight to try out. So, which ones were worth my time and which am I leaving behind? The concept of Magic Trips is simple. Put in a destination, the number of days you want to go away, and any filters you might have, and Magic Trips will generate an itinerary for you. The filters can include how much money you're willing to spend, what kind of experience you're looking for, any particular things you want to do there, and even a box to input your own specific requests. Once all of your request details have been put in (and you've entered your email, a required step in this process), you'll get a day-by-day itinerary for your trip. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. This is cool, and I like the simplified layout for it, complete with adjustable settings for your trip, but really, this can all be done in any of the major chatbots. Yes, you have to make your requests in ChatGPT without having pre-selected options, but it will produce an itinerary of a similar style. I do like that Magic Trips will pick out exact places for dinner and highlights for different cities but even then, it does all feel a bit generic. Squint your eyes and Komo could well be Perplexity, and that's because… well, it pretty much is. Komo follows the exact same formula of Perplexity, offering an alternative to Google, complete with different categories for whether you're asking a question, searching for something, researching or exploring topics. For those not particular about this kind of technology, it offers a search engine that scouts the internet to give you your answer. It searches articles, Reddit threads and more, compiling them all into one simple reply for you. Komo even has a 'discover' section that is nearly identical to Perplexity's discover page. That is not to say that Komo is a bad system. In my time using it, I had a lot of success with it, and it seems like a very usable system. If Perplexity didn't already exist, I would certainly now be using Komo. However, it really is identical down to the studs. Vizcom is an interesting premise. The website is for designers, offering a generative 3D model creator. You can either generate something completely from scratch, using prompts to describe what you're after. Or, you can draw something yourself and have it refined by AI. It's similar in nature to any of the big AI image generators you might have seen before, but here the focus is very much on a particular niche. In my time using it, I was impressed with how well it generated models. I was even more impressed with how well it could convert my bad drawings. While it's not a tool I need, it's a tool I like. isn't a new app. In fact, by the standards of the internet, is pretty ancient these days, starting way back in 2011. Since it first launched, it has become one of the go-to options for to-do lists and reminders. But last year, the company announced that users could now connect their account to ChatGPT. Through this, you can now tell ChatGPT to make an appointment, and it will connect it to your account. It can also find gaps in your schedule for meetings and give you a list of high-priority tasks. In other words, by connecting the two, turns ChatGPT into an even better assistant than it already is. You can also connect the app to a variety of other AI tools via Zapier. With this newest update, has since become my go-to reminders app, and I love it. I recently wrote about Hailuoai and its new update. The AI video generator has been on our radar for a while, but recently it has made an improvement with the ability to include camera angles and movements. This is done while also offering a fantastic free plan - something that is rarely seen in AI video generation, which is often pretty expensive to get involved with. While I don't think Hailuoai is the best AI video generator on the market, it's a fantastic option for those wanting to try out the technology for free.

Scale AI's Alexandr Wang confirms departure for Meta as part of $14.3 billion deal
Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang told employees in a memo on Thursday that he's leaving for Meta, confirming reports from earlier in the week about his departure and a large investment from the social networking company. Meta is pumping $14.3 billion into Scale AI as part of the deal, and will have a 49% stake in the artificial intelligence startup, but will not have any voting power, a Scale AI spokesperson said. "As you've probably gathered from recent news, opportunities of this magnitude often come at a cost," Wang wrote in the memo that he shared on X. "In this instance, that cost is my departure. It has been the absolute greatest pleasure of my life to serve as your CEO." Scale AI is promoting Jason Droege, the chief strategy officer, to the CEO role. Droege was previously a venture partner at Benchmark and an Uber vice president. A small number of Scale AI employees will also join Meta as part of the agreement, Wang wrote. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that the company has finalized its "strategic partnership and investment in Scale AI. "As part of this, we will deepen the work we do together producing data for AI models and Alexandr Wang will join Meta to work on our superintelligence efforts," the spokesperson said. "We will share more about this effort and the great people joining this team in the coming weeks." Meta's big bet on Wang fits into CEO Mark Zuckerberg's plans to bolster his company's AI efforts amid fierce competition from OpenAI and Google-parent Alphabet. Zuckerberg has made AI his company's top priority for 2025, but has grown increasingly frustrated with his team, particularly as Meta's latest version of its flagship Llama AI models received a tepid response from developers, CNBC reported earlier this week. Although Zuckerberg has traditionally placed long-standing employees into high-ranking position, he decided that the outsider Wang would be better suited to oversee AI initiatives deemed crucial for the company. Scale AI counts a number of Meta rivals as customers, including Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. Meta is one of Scale AI's biggest clients. The Scale AI spokesperson said that Meta's investment and hiring of Wang will not impact the startup's customers, and that Meta will not be privy to any of its business information or data.
