Edwards appointed Middlesbrough manager
Middlesbrough appointed Rob Edwards as the club's new manager on a three-year deal on Tuesday.
Edwards, who left Luton by mutual consent in January, replaces former Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick, whose reign was brought to a close earlier this month after the Teessiders missed out on the Championship play-offs.

The 42-year-old guided Luton to promotion to the Premier League in the 2022/23 season before overseeing their immediate relegation back to the second tier.
Luton then dropped down to League One last season after Edwards departed.
"Rob brings a wealth of experience, having led Luton to the top flight during his first season at the club, and he followed that by managing the Hatters in the Premier League," Middlesbrough said in a statement.
Edwards' task will be to re-establish Boro as promotion contenders after a disappointing 10th place finish at the end of last season, which extended their top-flight exile to eight years.

Neymar extends contract with Santos until the end of 2025
SAO PAULO (AP) — Neymar has extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos until the end of December. The 33-year-old forward returned to his boyhood club in late January but has been limited by injuries. His current deal was set to expire next week. Neymar and Santos confirmed the extension Tuesday. 'I extended my contract with Santos. I went, I came back and I stay where it all began and where it will never end,' Neymar said in a video on his social media channels. Neither side explained why he did not extend his contract until the middle of 2026, when many Brazilians still expect him to play in the World Cup. Earlier in June, new Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti hinted he is counting on Neymar's recovery to play in the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Since he left Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal for Santos, Neymar has played 12 matches, scored three goals and provided three assists. He had two extended periods of absence due to muscle injuries. Neymar played 225 matches for Santos in his first spell. He scored 138 goals, many of them key to winning six titles at the Brazilian giant, which was relegated in 2023 and returned to the top division last year. His latest appearance for the team was a frustrating one; he was sent off in the 76th minute of Santos' 1-0 loss to Botafogo at home on June 1 after using his hand to score. Realizing he was not going to reach the ball with his head before a defender could clear it away, Neymar used his right hand to push the ball into the net. The Brazil forward already had a yellow card and was shown his second by the referee, who then disallowed the goal. Botafogo then scored the winner in the 86th. Saudi club Al-Hilal terminated Neymar's contract with mutual consent, six months early, after he played only seven matches. An ACL injury sidelined him for a year until October. Al-Hilal said Neymar could no longer perform like he used to. Neymar also left Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain to criticism, despite delivering silverware and goals. Santos is in the 15th position in the Brazilian league with 11 points after 12 matches. ___ AP soccer:

FIFA opens case against Gustavo Cabral after allegation he racially abused Antonio Rudiger
FIFA has confirmed that the organization's disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against CF Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral after the Argentine was accused of racially abusing the Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger during Sunday's Club World Cup group stage fixture. Rudiger, a German international, immediately notified the match referee Ramon Abatti after the pair appeared to square up during injury time of Madrid's 3-1 win over the Mexican team in Charlotte. The referee performed FIFA's crossed arms protocol gesture to signify that racist abuse had been alleged. Cabral, the 39-year-old Pachuca captain, denied the allegation after the match. Advertisement FIFA said on Tuesday night that the decision to open proceedings has been made 'following an assessment of the match reports' by the officials. Cabral will be permitted to play in the competition while the investigation continues. Pachuca play their final game of the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal on Thursday night but cannot progress into the knockout stages after losing against RB Salzburg and Real Madrid in their first two matches. He told journalists after the match: 'It was a fight, we collided, he said that I hit him with my hand and then there was an argument and the referee made the sign of racism. In Argentina we say 'cagon de mierda' (a profanity used to call someone a coward), all the time I told him the same thing.' The Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso had announced on Sunday that an investigation into the incident had begun. He said: 'Toni has told us something, the FIFA protocol is activated and an investigation is under way,' Alonso said during his post-match press conference. 'We believe him. It is unacceptable.' Upon hearing of Cabral's explanation, Rudiger's camp reiterated his position to The Athletic. The Pachuca head coach Jaime Lozano told the post-match press conference on Sunday: 'I only found out now that you are telling me, we haven't talked about it in the dressing room. I haven't spoken to Cabral about it. 'Nothing justifies that, but I will talk to him but knowing him from before this has never happened with him, nor with any of these Pachuca players in our league. I tell you I can put my hands in the fire for my captain.' The Athletic reported on June 16 FIFA had decided not to show videos, signage or marketing assets in venues hosting the Club World Cup in the United States which explicitly mention challenging racism or discrimination during the opening days of the tournament. Advertisement This represented a significant rollback from previous FIFA competitions, such as the Women's World Cup in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand and the men's World Cup in 2022 in Qatar. The federation faced criticism from human rights groups, who called for a reverse of the decision, and FIFA did not explain the reasoning behind the rollback. FIFA then displayed anti-racism and discrimination messaging at the tournament for one day on Wednesday to mark International Day for Countering Hate Speech. This included a video explaining FIFA's anti-racism protocols and the 'universal anti-racism gesture' being played on the screen before the fixture between Manchester City and Wydad AC at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. FIFA has declined to comment when asked if the current political climate in the U.S. played any part in its decision amid hostility towards companies who support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Neymar extends contract with boyhood club Santos until December
Neymar has signed a contract extension with boyhood club Santos until December. Neymar, 33, spent the second half of the 2024-25 season with Santos on a six-month contract following his exit from Al Hilal in January. He made 14 appearances on his return, scoring three goals for the club where he graduated from the youth system and scored 136 goals in 225 games during his early career. Advertisement 'I made a decision and I listened to my heart,' Neymar said in a statement on the club's website. 'Santos is not just my team, it is my home, my roots, my history and my life. 'Here I was a boy who became a man, and I am truly loved. Here I can be myself, truly happy. And it is here that I want to fulfil the dreams that are missing in my career. And nothing will stop me. I go, I come back and I stay. Where it all began and where it will never end.' A post shared by Santos Futebol Clube (@santosfc) The forward played just seven times during his 18-month spell in Saudi Arabia, after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee while playing for Brazil in October 2023. Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, has not received a call-up for the national team since he suffered the injury against Uruguay. He scored 105 goals over four seasons with Barcelona after joining the Catalan club as a 21-year-old in 2013. He won two La Liga titles, a Champions League and the Copa del Rey on three occasions during that period, and joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for €222million, which remains the world-record transfer fee. He went on to help PSG to five Ligue 1 titles, three Coupe de France victories and four Trophée des Champions, but could not guide them to a maiden Champions League trophy. Neymar recorded 118 goals and 79 assists in 173 matches for the French club, before moving to Al Hilal for £80million ($102m) in August 2023.
