Palani farmers hit sweet spot with lime, rake in better profit

DINDIGUL: Farmers in Palani and nearby areas in Dindigul district are increasingly turning to lemon cultivation, finding it more profitable and marketable than traditional crops like tomato, sapota and guava. They say lemons could be directly sold to retailers or wholesalers, bypassing commission agents or traders.
Speaking to
TNIE
, B Raja, a farmer said, 'Lemon mostly grows in red soil, which is mostly prevalent in Palani and its surroundings. There are many varieties of lemon saplings - Rs 120 (3 years old), Rs 90 (1 year old), and PKM (Periyakulam variety) costing Rs 10 (2 months old). Around 80-90 saplings can be planted in one acre. The total cost of inputs including fertiliser and pesticide touch Rs 20,000 per acre. Each lemon tree, which lives for 6-10 years, yields around 1,000 to 2,000 lemons annually. The cost for plucking is Rs 500 per day, but if the farmer's family pluck it, the expense is reduced.'
Speaking to
TNIE
, G Radhakrishnan another farmer said, 'The wastage is less in lemon farmland. If a lemon falls on the ground, it remains the same without decaying for more than three days. But for the guava, it isn't. A guava starts to decay, the moment it falls on the ground. A guava farmer could lose more than 40-60 boxes (1 box-25 kilograms) per year due to decay.'
Besides, he mentioned that lemons are also procured by pickle factories and industries for a good price of Rs 90 per kg. According to the horticulture department, over 400 hectares of fresh plantations of lemon were noticed in Palani and Oddanchatram in 2024-25. Overall gross cropped areas in Dindigul have grown from 2,376 hectares in 2021-22 to 2,900 hectares in 2024-25.
Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association (Dindigul) secretary K Vadivel said, 'Many times, the price doesn't fluctuate and we find farmers often choosing farm produce whose price is mostly stable. Just as white ants destroy coconut trees, guava plants also suffer from infections, making lemons a safer choice.
An official from the Horticulture Department (Dindigul) said, 'Farmers switch from one crop to another if it is financially beneficial. Farmers in hilly areas prefer lemons to other crops in Palani and Oddanchatram taluks in Dindigul district and the overall crop pattern of the district remains largely unchanged.'

ITI courses remain popular, 1.2L apply for admissions

Pune: Over 1.2 lakh students have applied for Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) with an intake capacity of 1.4 lakh seats this year. Applications are 10% higher in state-run ITIs as compared to private institutes. Over the past 5-6 years, ITIs have seen a rise in demand due to work opportunities. A guaranteed apprenticeship after completion of the three-year course has raised the bar. Experts said that better job opportunities after course completion, direct second-year entry to engineering courses and new-age courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and the traditional electronic, mechanical, and information technology diploma courses were the main drivers for students to pick ITI. Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) has also announced a revised schedule for admissions to ITIs. Students can now submit their online applications till June 26. So far, over 1.39 lakh students have registered for ITI admissions, of which 1.25 lakh have completed and submitted their applications. This admission process covers 1,007 ITIs across the state, including 419 govt-run and 588 private institutes. The online application process began on May 15 . The first merit list will be out on July 9, followed by the first round of admissions between July 10 and 15. Subsequent admission rounds will go on till Aug with the final institute-level counselling round on Aug 21. Suresh Kadu, retired principal of a govt ITI in Pune, said, "Students opt for diploma, technical courses, skill-based course or vocational education after SSC. The demand for students with ITI diplomas is high in the market for a skilled workforce. Students also want these short-term courses and there is job waiting at the end of it." Affordable fees are another attraction. They range between Rs 15,000 and Rs 16,000 for govt-run institutes and private institutes charge around Rs 25,000. Student Vishal Jadhav said, "I will set up my startup in mechanics. My uncle has been in the business for over 20 years. The ITI course will qualify me to set up the business." CBI books Tata Consulting Engineers, JNPT officials for alleged running of cartel

MUMBAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI ) has booked the project manager of Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), the chief manager of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust ( JNPT ) and unknown officials for allegedly causing a loss of Rs 800 crore to the exchequer by running a cartel and awarding contracts to selected international bidders. According to a first information report (FIR) filed earlier this week, Sunil Kumar Madabhavi, the chief manager (PP&D) of JNPT at the time, in conspiracy with Devdutt Bose, the then project manager of TCE, a Tata Group company, allowed complementary bidding in the tendering process. By doing so, they allowed the formation of the joint venture by the solely eligible bidders - Boskalis Smit India LLP and Jan De Nul Dredging India (also known as BSI-JDN JV). The agency has alleged that the Competition Commission of India guidelines were violated in the process. The FIR adds that a shadow bidding arrangement was put in place to support the cartel formed by Boskalis Smit India and Jan De Nul Dredging India. It said "this was allowed by Madabhavi in connivance with Bose, project manager from M/s TCE and other unknown persons, thereby allowing the said cartel to participate in the bidding process for capital Dredging Phase-ll through their joint venture namely BSI-JDN JV." ET has seen a copy of the FIR. It also said that payments amounting to Rs 348 crore in phase-ll for work already executed in phase-l, without actually performing the work, was paid, thereby causing undue advantage to BSI-JDN JV. The dredging work was carried out in two phases - Capital Dredging Project Phase I and Capital Dredging Project Phase Il. The CBI has mentioned the period of the scam as 2003 to 2019, when the two phases were executed. The FIR said "several stringent Project Qualifications (PQ) criteria and tailor-made specifications were inserted in the tender documents of Phase - ll to eliminate the Indian bidders from the competition and to the advantage of the international bidders".
