KUCHING (May 28): The vibrant 'Pesta Babulang dan Lumba Kerbau' will return to Batu Danau, Limbang, from July 4 to 6, marking its 20th edition as one of Sarawak's most unique and anticipated cultural festivals.
Organised by the Sarawak Bisaya Association, this year's celebration holds added significance as it also commemorates the association's 54th anniversary — a milestone marking decades of cultural preservation and community unity.
'This annual cultural festival has, over the years, grown into a vibrant gathering that brings together not just the Bisaya community but also visitors from across Malaysia and beyond,' the association said in a statement.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the festival on July 5, reflecting the state government's continued support towards cultural festivals that strengthen Sarawak's diverse identity.
'It is a time of reflection, pride and celebration, and we hope to share it with as many people as possible,' added the association.
Festival-goers can expect a packed programme featuring the thrilling buffalo race (Lumba Karabau), beauty pageant (Agak Asal), the symbolic 'Nakod Babulang', 'Tanding Bagandang', raft decoration and river rides, and the classic tug-of-war (Bintal Kalat).
Adding to the excitement, this year's edition will also include lively traditional song and music performances by ethnic groups from across Limbang Division, highlighting the spirit of inclusivity and cross-cultural appreciation.

National Youth Day celebration to showcase elements of Asean

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Youth Day (HBN) celebration on June 13-15 will be unique as it will showcase elements of Asean, in line with Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean 2025. The HBN secretariat said the programme for the celebration at Dataran Merdeka includes the Asean Pavillion and Asean Concert to create the spirit of the Asean community and strengthen the culture of Asean countries among the youth. "The role of youth is seen as vital to strengthening Asean's regional network, particularly future collaborations in the fields of economy, leadership, education, technological innovation and social. In fact, youth can also act as junior ambassadors who can elevate the country's image globally,' it said in a statement. Themed "Yakin Boleh' (Believe You Can), the highlight of the 61st HBN celebration will be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who will officiate the event and present the 2025 National Premier Youth Award (APBN) on June 14. "The theme illustrates the confidence, capability and competitiveness of the youth in facing challenges, including that of the current digital era. This theme also aligns with the Madani government's efforts to empower youths through various strategic initiatives as well as the values of confidence within the Madani framework,' it added. With the targeted presence of 4 million visitors, the Youth and Sports Ministry, through the National Youth and Sports Department (JBSN), has activated the HBN celebration at the grassroots level by implementing the Semarak HBN initiative in 113 districts nationwide since May 15. At the national level, the Semarak HBN initiative has been further enlivened by the inclusion of the National Youth Convention; eSports games and activities; career and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) carnivals; as well as programmes on fitness, leadership, arts, music and culture and awareness of mental health and cyberbullying. Other programmes include the Suara Belia (Voice of the Youth) podcast; the recitation of the Malaysian Youth Pledge at various levels; the 2025 HBN Special Islamic Affairs Premier Forum; and the implementation of Special Friday sermons nationwide through the collaboration of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) and State Islamic Religious departments. "Conceptualised as a festival and based on 15 segments/ports, it is an initiative with a 'youth for youth' approach that is designed to meet the needs and wants of today's youth. This structured programme is also based on the 10 elements of the Rakan Muda lifestyle,' the HBN secretariat added.- Bernama

‘Kaamatan for All' highlights Sabahans' community spirit

Spoilt for choice: Many come to buy handmade beads and Kaamatan-themed accessories at the Hongkod Koisaan. KOTA KINABALU: All eyes will be on the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association's (KDCA) Hongkod Koisaan in Penampang as the month-long Kaamatan or Harvest Festival will culminate in the grand finale, celebrated today and tomorrow. Since May 1, Sabahans have been celebrating Kaamatan with singing, dancing, traditional games and enjoying delicious food. But it is at the Hongkod Koisaan, which loosely means unity hall, where the energy truly comes alive. The celebration here is always the most colourful and exciting, bringing together people of all races and backgrounds to honour the harvest festival and Sabah's rich traditions. The Hongkod Koisaan, the heart of Sabah's native heritage, is a central hub where traditions, history and the way of life of indigenous communities are preserved, promoted and proudly celebrated. The Kaamatan celebration will be extra special as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are expected to attend the celebration today. This will mark the Prime Minister's third appearance at the Kaamatan finale. Sabah's Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman and his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin will grace the official closing ceremony tomorrow. Visitors can enjoy cultural performances, traditional sports like blowpipe shooting and stilt walking, as well as visit stalls selling handicrafts, traditional food and attire. They can also add handmade beads and Kaamatan-themed accessories to their collection. One of the highlights of the celebration is the Unduk Ngadau, a special event that honours Huminodun, the legendary maiden who gave her life to save her people from famine. The new Harvest Queen will be crowned tomorrow. This year's theme, 'Kaamatan montok Toinsanan' (Kaamatan for All), is a reminder that true strength lies in the unity and support of the community as everyone strives forward together.

#SHOWBIZ: Malaysia, Indonesia partner to boost film industries globally

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Indonesia are set to form a strategic partnership aimed at elevating their local film industries to international standards, positioning them as a global focus. To achieve this, a specialised team will be established, concentrating on script development and examining the financial structures necessary for film production. The initiative follows a meeting between the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) and an Indonesian delegation, led by Deputy Culture Minister, Giring Ganesha. The discussions took place during the recent Marche du Film event in Cannes, France. Finas chief executive officer, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, said he had previously discussed this collaboration with Indonesian Culture Minister, Fadli Zon, at a film event in Hong Kong. "Among the things we are discussing is producing a film project together. Perhaps a story about culture, especially one that highlights Eastern values," Azmir told BH Online. He added that both nations share many cultural similarities, such as removing shoes when entering a home, eating with hands, and respecting parents, making shared storytelling a natural fit. The Indonesian delegation in Cannes included renowned actors Christine Hakim, Chelsea Islan, Iko Uwais, and Reza Rahadian. Azmir stated that the special team would comprise representatives from both countries to foster collaborative idea generation and creativity. "The current plan is to form a special team that will research and produce the script. There will be representatives from Indonesia and Malaysia." Azmir suggested exploring stories about figures or imams known across the archipelago, such as those recognised in both Malaysia and Indonesia. This bilateral cooperation will also encourage private agencies to provide mutual assistance. "This initiative is not 100 per cent funded by the Malaysian and Indonesian governments. This planning also involves private agencies," Azmir clarified. The partnership aims to produce films not only for the Malaysian and Indonesian markets but also for export to various other countries. "During the discussion, we thought it was time to produce a film for international viewing that tells about our culture and language," he added. Indonesian filmmakers have also expressed interest in Malaysia's success in animated films. Azmir noted: "Our animated films like 'Boboiboy' can be said to be strong, that's why they are interested in doing this two-way collaboration." Conversely, Malaysia acknowledges Indonesia's strong storytelling capabilities and cultural portrayals in films. Azmir believes that combining Malaysia's technical and animation expertise with Indonesia's narrative strengths will lead to a more robust outcome. The discussions have been communicated to Finas chairman, Datuk Hans Isaac, and Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Azmir anticipates further engagement with the Indonesian side at both the CEO and ministerial levels.
