'Isolated event': US ambassador dismisses Canadian travel warning, denies widespread phone searches at border

The American ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra defended US border practices, rejecting Ottawa's recent travel warning that advised Canadians to prepare for possible phone searches and detentions when entering the United States.
Hoekstra told The Canadian Press that while some Canadians may have had negative experiences, these are isolated incidents and not reflective of broader US policy.
'If a Canadian has had a disappointing experience coming into the United States, I'm not denying that it happened, but I'm saying it's an isolated event and it is not a pattern, 'Hoekstra said.
'Searching devices and all of that is not a well-founded fear.
We don't do that. America is a welcoming place.'
In April, the Canadian government updated its travel advisory, warning citizens about potential scrutiny at US ports of entry, including searches of electronic devices. There have been multiple reports of Canadians facing intense questioning, phone checks, and even detainment at the border.
Hoekstra pushed back on those claims, while also noting that some American travellers to Canada have reported similarly cold receptions.

'I've heard that from Americans coming into Canada as well, OK? Saying, 'You know, we've not received a warm reception when we've gotten to Canadian customs,'' he said.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), in response, said all officers are expected to follow a code of conduct that promotes fairness, respect, and professionalism.
'Treating people with respect, dignity and fairness is fundamental to our border services officers' relationship with the public,' CBSA spokeswoman Karine Martel said.
Hoekstra said the decision to travel is up to individuals, but added that those who stay away from the US are 'missing an opportunity.'
Travel between Canada and the US has dropped, with airlines cutting flights due to decreased demand. According to Flight Centre Travel Group Canada, there was a nearly 40 per cent drop in year-over-year flights between the two countries in February.
A recent survey by Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies found that 52 per cent of Canadians believe it's no longer safe for all Canadians to travel to the US.
A similar number said they personally feel unwelcome in the US.
Concerns have also been raised by LGBTQ2S+ groups, some of which have opted out of attending World Pride in Washington and United Nations events in New York, citing increased scrutiny at the border amid the Trump administration's rollback of protections for transgender and nonbinary individuals.

B'luru stampede: Somanna slams govt, defends suspended top cop

Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna on Sunday said even an entire year's state budget cannot compensate for the tragic loss of lives in the stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. His remarks came in response to questions from the media regarding the Karnataka govt's revised compensation of Rs 25 lakh per victim, up from the initial Rs 10 lakh. "Even the amount of one full year's state budget cannot compensate for the lives lost in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium," Somanna said. "Royal Challengers Bengaluru reached the IPL finals after 18 years, and the authorities should have planned accordingly. Unfortunately, the chief minister mishandled the situation. Perhaps, he acted on poor advice from his associates," he added. The minister also criticised the suspension of Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, calling it unjust. "I've known the work of IPS officer Dayananda for many years. His suspension is unfair, especially when he had no direct role in the stampede. It was a good decision to appoint him as commissioner, and he should be reinstated immediately. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Promoções imperdíveis de voos baratos Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Govt has gone off track, and they must be held accountable for this tragedy," he added. Reflecting on his past association with CM Siddaramaiah, Somanna expressed disappointment over what he described as a shift in leadership style. "I was in the Congress and was very close to Siddaramaiah. I knew him well — he was not like this. Power seems to have changed him. In the Congress party, no other leader in the country has been given the kind of freedom Siddaramaiah enjoys. It looks like he has changed just to survive as chief minister. This is not the Siddaramaiah I once knew," he said. Somanna also spoke about his personal transformation after becoming a Union minister. "In the past year, after becoming minister of railways and observing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's daily routine and work ethic, I've changed myself," he said. "The state govt should take note of how the Prime Minister functions. They should visit Delhi and see his discipline and dedication first hand. I'm deeply impressed by Modi's style of governance," he added.

Villagers block GP office with thorns over MGNREGA irregularities

1 2 Manvi (Raichur): Residents of Sunkeshwar village in the taluk have blocked the gram panchayat office with thorny bushes since Saturday to voice their concerns over alleged irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme. They claimed that the panchayat development officer (PDO) and other officials disregarded their numerous complaints regarding the shortage of drinking water. "GP staff never come to our village. All operations are managed from Manvi town. What is the point of having a PDO who ignores the community?" one protester remarked. The villagers assert that the panchayat is ineffective and exists merely on paper. Residents also accused the panchayat of significant fraud under the MGNREGA scheme. They alleged that counterfeit job cards were issued, and falsified attendance records were created to embezzle govt funds amounting to crores of rupees. "In reality, no work was accomplished here. Yet records indicate everything is finished," expressed Chand Pasha, a villager, in frustration. Villagers further complained that their issues remain unaddressed because the panchayat staff operate from the town rather than the GP office in the village. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Frustrated by the persistent corruption and neglect, they chose to block the panchayat office and warned that if the authorities do not respond, they will intensify their protests. In response to the situation, panchayat development officer Nagabhushan Kamble stated, "The villagers are protesting because they insist that only legitimate labourers should be employed and compensated under the MGNREGA scheme. The blockade of the GP building occurred because I refused to disburse wages to someone else under the guise of labourers."
