Step Back In Time And Tour The Mercedes Factory Building The First Ever S-Class
People love saying that "they don't make them like they used to," with "them" referring to everything from breakfast cereals to aircraft. Now, you can step inside an old Mercedes factory to explore exactly how they did used to build them, with this particular "them" being the iconic W116 S-Class.
The W116 was produced by Mercedes between 1972 and 1980 at its Sindelfingen factory in Germany, which has about 100 years of history building cars for Mercedes-Benz. Back in the 1970s, Mercedes let a film crew onto the factory floor to see how it assembled its first S-Class, and the resulting film is a cacophony of manual labor, controversial fashion choices, and rudimentary car-building robots (since well upgraded) on the factory floor.
The film begins with a look into a few stages of the development of the W116. There are technical drawings showing the design of the car, clay models of the finished design, and footage of the W116's V8 engine undergoing tests on a dyno rig.

Once the development of the car was complete, it was displayed at the Paris Motor Show back in fall 1972, where the W116 made its public debut. After that, Mercedes was ready to kick off mass production of the new flagship.
The first stage of the build for the car starts at the press shop, where enormous sheets of steel are cut down to size and stamped to form the body panels of the W116. Huge presses churn out fenders, wheel arches, and other panels that are essential for the cars. The steel chassis of the car is then assembled and the body panels are lined up to be welded into position.
At this point, the hood is attached up front and the doors are also bolted into place. All of the welds on the car are then smoothed over and the shell of the car is checked by Mercedes engineers.
Once it's signed off, the frame of the S-Class is dipped into a huge tank that's filled with a special liquid to help prevent the steel work from corroding over time. The underside of the car is also sprayed to treat the surfaces, before primer is applied to the bodywork and several layers of paint are sprayed on top.
Over the next few stages of production, workers crowd around each frame fitting the dashboard and interior, as well as the lining for the trunk of the car. The wiring is all woven into the car at this stage, and all manner of checks are carried out on the components as they are bolted into place.
Trim pieces on the exterior, headlights and taillights are the next to go in, before the gleaming Mercedes grille is fitted up front. Finally, the windows and chrome details are fitted to the car before it is handed off to the next department.
While all that is going on, another area of the plant assembles the transmissions and engines that, once complete, are joined together and dropped into place at the front of the S-Class. The axles and other mechanical components are installed, before the wheels can be fitted at each corner and the finished car is handed over to quality control for a full suit of checks.
The factory that all this is filmed at is still owned and operated by Mercedes-Benz, and it still builds the S-Class there to this day. The production lines have all been refined and updated over the years -- as has the S-Class itself -- so now the plant churns out more than 200,000 cars every year. At the time that this film was produced, the output was closer to 100,000 units per year.

Column: Full-size electric pickups are failed product planning experiment and industry disaster
There is a statistic in my colleague Laurence Iliff's story on the failure of full-size electric pickups that, pardon the pun, shocked me. The combustion and hybrid Toyota Tundra had more new-vehicle registrations during the first quarter than the entire industry's collection of full-size electric pickups — by a lot. That statistic is in no way a brag on the Tundra, which remains a distant No. 5 in what is now a five-horse segment since the death of the even slower-selling Nissan Titan. According to S&P Global Mobility, the Tundra recorded a meager 36,895 new registrations in the U.S. in the first quarter, while the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer, Rivian R1T and GMC Sierra EV collectively posted about 22,000 registrations. By comparison, combustion-powered pickups from Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram reached 478,823 registrations in the first quarter, S&P said. Were it not for investments and expectations that rival the size of the immense front fascias on virtually all of the aforementioned full-size behemoths, this failed experiment would already be over. I can't begin to fathom how many tens of billions of dollars were spent by automakers and their suppliers developing and building those full-size electric pickups over the last decade. You can, however, get some sense of how bad the miss was when you look at the sales/production volumes auto executives anticipated, including Elon Musk's quarter- to half-million annual sales estimate for the Cybertruck, or Ford's initial F-150 Lightning estimate of up to 150,000 sales annually. So why did full-size electric pickups fail so badly? I would argue that it wasn't just physics — though the need for a bigger, more expensive battery to push these bigger vehicles farther as long as they are not towing anything shouldn't be minimized. But I think a share of the responsibility for this collective flop also lies with the companies' product planning departments. While all vehicles are compromised in some form or fashion by the time they reach consumers, full-size electric pickups lack a fundamental quality that has made their combustion-powered counterparts the U.S. sales champs for decades: Uncompromised utility. The legacy pickups are renowned for accomplishing whatever task their owners set them to. That unstoppable capability is what gave rise to the 'lifestyle' pickup in the first place, as consumers desired at least a taste of that confidence, even if they rarely, if ever, actually needed that power. Product planners and their auto executive bosses failed to account in their sales projections for just how much compromise an electric-pickup owner would face in everyday life. Sure, the trucks have some excellent features, including loads and loads of torque, but so do their combustion counterparts. And while it may cost extra fuel to tow a trailer with those combustion-powered vehicles, a heavy trailer sucks up a battery pack's juice quickly — and recharging is not nearly as quick and convenient as a gas station fill-up. It's the same reason that battery-electric semis are probably doomed to failure: It's just the wrong technology for that use case. Sorry. In a world ruled by logic and not emotion, society would consign new technologies to the areas where they have the greatest advantage. Battery-electric powertrains make the greatest sense in vehicles with limited mass and with limited demands, while hydrogen (and diesel) is more efficient in larger, demand-dependent vehicles where towing capability is paramount. Carvana (CVNA): Buy, Sell, or Hold Post Q1 Earnings?

Known for its glass tower car vending machines, Carvana (NYSE:CVNA) provides a convenient automotive shopping experience by offering an online platform for buying and selling used cars. As an online retailer, Carvana generates revenue growth by expanding its number of users and the average order size in dollars. Over the last two years, Carvana's retail units sold, a key performance metric for the company, increased by 13.8% annually to 133,898 in the latest quarter. This growth rate is among the fastest of any consumer internet business and indicates its offerings have significant traction. Free cash flow isn't a prominently featured metric in company financials and earnings releases, but we think it's telling because it accounts for all operating and capital expenses, making it tough to manipulate. Cash is king. As you can see below, Carvana's margin expanded by 30.2 percentage points over the last few years. This is encouraging, and we can see it became a less capital-intensive business because its free cash flow profitability rose more than its operating profitability. Carvana's free cash flow margin for the trailing 12 months was 6.4%. Average revenue per unit (ARPU) is a critical metric to track because it measures how much customers spend per order. Carvana's ARPU has been roughly flat over the last two years. This isn't great, but the increase in retail units sold is more relevant for assessing long-term business potential. We'll monitor the situation closely; if Carvana tries boosting ARPU by taking a more aggressive approach to monetization, it's unclear whether units can continue growing at the current pace. Carvana's positive characteristics outweigh the negatives, and with its shares beating the market recently, the stock trades at 24× forward EV/EBITDA (or $342.50 per share).
