Ferrari unveils new 296 Speciale hybrid models ahead of EV launch
MARANELLO (Italy), April 30 — Ferrari refreshed its hybrid range on Tuesday with the new 296 Speciale and its convertible version as the luxury sports car maker prepares for its first leap into the fully electric era.
Ferrari, which will present its first EV in October, showcased the two new plug-in hybrid models at its Maranello headquarters, in northern Italy.
They are based on the 2021 Ferrari 296, a car now approaching the end of its life cycle.
The 296 Speciale is lighter, more powerful and with improved aerodynamics, Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera said, adding it was focused on performance and driving pleasure.
'It's not a car for everyone, we won't widen our client base with it,' he said during the presentation.
'It's a model for our historic clients, who know Ferrari very well and seek driving thrill'.
The 296 Speciale packs a three-litre, six-cylinder, 700 horsepower combustion engine. Its electric component adds a further 180 horsepower.
Deliveries are expected to start in the first quarter of next year, while the retractable top version, known as the 'A', will be available in the second quarter.
The new car will have a price tag in Italy of 407,000 euros ($449,000), rising to 462,000 euros for the convertible, which puts them in the mid- to high-end of Ferrari's price range.
Prices will be higher in the United States by an amount still to be defined, Galliera said, after Ferrari announced last month it was increasing prices of some of its cars in the country by up to 10 per cent in response to tariffs.
Only some models approaching the end of their life cycles are being excluded from U.S. price increases.
Order books for the 296 Speciale open on Tuesday, but interest is already high, Galliera said. Clients who have interacted with an official Ferrari dealer in the past five years will have a priority in placing orders.
Though not a limited-series model, its exclusivity will be preserved by keeping its life cycle shorter than the four-to-five years typical for other Ferrari models, Galliera added.
Ferrari's first fully electric car, breaking its tradition of roaring petrol engines, will be unveiled on October 9 in Maranello.
'It will be something completely different. But we've been developing skills on components for EVs for more than a decade,' Galliera said.
CEO Benedetto Vigna reaffirmed this month Ferrari would continue to make petrol and hybrid cars, as well as EVs. He added the company would launch a total of six new models this year, including the fully-electric one. — REUTERS

South Korea exports fall as tariffs hit US, China shipments
SEOUL: South Korea's exports fell in May for the first time in four months, as shipments to the United States and China dropped on global trade conflict triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. Exports from Asia's fourth-largest economy, an early bellwether for global trade, declined 1.3% from the same month last year to $57.27 billion, government data showed on Sunday. Hamilton targets first Ferrari podium
LEWIS HAMILTON bounced back from a desultory Friday to beat his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc in qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix to raise hopes of a first podium with the Italian team. The 40-year-old seven-time world champion, who switched from Mercedes to Ferrari this year, qualified fifth on Saturday and will line up alongside his 'silver arrows' successor Kimi Antonelli on the third row of Sunday's grid. Leclerc qualified seventh. For Hamilton it was a dramatic change of fortunes after describing his car as 'not driveable' in practice on Friday when former Mercedes team-mate, 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg, suggested his age was slowing him down. 'I had a floor problem in FP2 on Friday,' explained Hamilton. 'So, I lost a lot of down-force and the balance of the car shifted. We managed to fix it and the car is much more driveable and enjoyable today. 'To get into Q3 and the top five, I'm very happy with that and I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I can race in this car! 'The long run will be challenging for everyone and choosing which tyres and which strategy are best. But we'll see. My goal is to get a podium. I haven't had one for so long - so that's my target.' Hamilton last secured a podium finish, the 202nd of his career, in Las Vegas last November. He will seek his first podium in 10 races. The Circuit de Catalunya, venue for the Spanish race, is one of his favourites. He has won a record-equalling six times, shared with Michael Schumacher, and taken pole six times. He has won 105 races in his career. Team-mate Leclerc said he chose to conserve tyres and did not make a second flying run in Q3. 'I had no tyres left so I didn't go out again. Piastri outpaces Norris in 'mega' McLaren to grab Spanish GP pole
BARCELONA: Series leader Oscar Piastri erased "miserable" memories on Saturday as he outpaced team-mate Lando Norris to deliver McLaren's first front row lockout at the Spanish Grand Prix since 1998. The 24-year-old Australian, who leads Norris by three points in the drivers' championship, clocked a final lap in one minute 11.546 seconds to beat Norris by two-tenths of a second, the biggest winning pole margin this year. It brought him his fourth pole this season and fourth of his career and set up the two McLaren men as clear favourites for Sunday's race - 31 of the 34 Spanish Grands Prix to date having been won by a car starting on the front row. "It's been a good weekend so far. It didn't start off in the best way. We were struggling a little last night, but we found some pace and the car has been mega," said Piastri. "I feel like I was able to put in some fast laps as well so thank you to the team for all the hard work. This was a pretty miserable scene 12 months ago so to have turned it around in the best way is a great result." Piastri was 10th on the grid last year after having a qualifying lap deleted when he ran off into a gravel trap and finished seventh in the race. "Oscar drove very well," said Norris, who pushed hard to take pole in the final qualifying session. "I think the pace is definitely there, but for just a couple of little mistakes. Oscar has been driving very well all weekend. It's a good result for the team and an interesting start for tomorrow. "Hopefully, it's an easy race for me. It's a long run down into turn one, which is normally interesting. We've got a lot of quick guys behind us and we won't count them out. It's a good result for today." The session was briefly stalled when Alpine's Franco Colapinto stopped in the pitlane and, after a delay, forced others to undertake him leading to a frantic final two minutes. Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull was eliminated in 20th and last place along with Colapinto, Williams' Carlos Sainz - his worst qualifying result at his home event - in 18th, Esteban Ocon of Haas and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. For Tsunoda, it was a major setback as he sought to solve Red Bull's dilemma in searching for a partner to push Verstappen. Out in Q2 went Alex Albon of Williams, Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto, Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson, Stroll and Oliver Bearman in his Haas, leaving the way clear for McLaren's to sparkle in the Spanish sunshine. - AFP
