Six accused in Chhattisgarh's coal levy scam set for release after apex court grants interim bail
RAIPUR: Day after Supreme Courtgranted interim bail to six accused inChhattisgarh coal-levy scam including two suspended IAS officers Ranu Sahu, Sameer Vishnoi and a former state officer Saumya Chaurasia, they are scheduled to be released from Raipur jail on Saturday.
The release, initially scheduled for today, was delayed due to late receipt of release orders at the Raipur Central Jail.
The defense counsel advocate Faizal Rizvi told the media that Saumya Chaurasia, former deputy secretary to the ex-Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Ranu Sahu, suspended IAS officer, Sameer Vishnoi, suspended IAS officer, and others including Rajnikant Tiwari, Virendra Jaiswal, Sandeep Nayak will be released on Saturday while the timing has not been confirmed yet.
Rizvi said that the SC has issued release of eight persons but as of now six of them are getting released, while other two, businessmen Suryakant Tiwari and Nikhil Chandrakar is still pending due to other cases against them and they will continue to remain in judicial custody.
The Supreme Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Dipankar Datta granted bail but imposed a key condition — all six accused must not stay within Chhattisgarh until further orders.
The restriction aims to prevent possible tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.
The bail conditions include that the accused must report their residential address outside the state within a week of release, they must submit their passports to designated special courts, mandatory cooperation with investigation agencies and court appearances and furnish details of current residence must be shared with the jurisdictional police station.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges a massive Rs 570 crore illegal coal levy scam involving a nexus of bureaucrats, politicians, and traders. The scam operated by converting online permits to offline, enabling a systematic extortion racket from coal transporters.
A key player, Sameer Vishnoi, then Director of the State Mining Department, allegedly issued the order that enabled this offline transition on July 15, 2020.
Traders were forced to pay Rs 25 per ton to the network allegedly led by Suryakant Tiwari in exchange for transport clearances.
The ED claimed that Suryakant Tiwari, a coal businessman, ran the collection syndicate and acted as the kingpin, with bureaucrats and political operatives facilitating the scam. Over time, the network extorted over Rs 570 crore.
The case has become one of the largest corruption scandals in Chhattisgarh's recent history, with political ramifications and a sweeping legal battle still underway.

UPI payment helps cops rescue abducted trader
Kolkata: Bhowanipore Police on Saturday rescued a Kulpi-based trader who was kidnapped 48 hours earlier from near the Netaji Bhavan metro station and kept confined to a condo's 11th-floor flat on SC Mullick Road, close to Jadavpur's Sulekha area. The accused allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh, later revised to Rs 5 lakh, from the victim's family through WhatsApp calls made to the victim's wife. The victim, Timir Kanti Majumder, had travelled to Kolkata from South 24 Parganas on May 28 for some bank-related work. The rescue operation lasted less than four hours and involved the use of state-of-the-art technical surveillance. "The main hurdle of the investigation was to locate any suspect as neither the complainant — Majumder's wife Tapasi — nor her family members could provide any details about any suspect. The suspects themselves were not using mobile phones," said DC (South) Priyabrata Roy. The accused kept their phones switched off and used the victim's phone to place ransom demands using a Wi-Fi network. The victim's wife panicked on receiving the ransom calls and told the accused she needed time to try and arrange the money. She sent the accused Rs 10,000 — of the Rs 5 lakh demanded as ransom — to the UPI ID of one of the accused, Suman Bose. This transaction later turned out to be the most crucial lead in the investigation. "We located Bose near Sukanta Setu. He was nabbed and questioned extensively before he led us to the flat located inside the Jadavpur condo. He also helped us track down the victim," said an investigating officer. The complainant, though, has denied the claims, stating Majumder was tricked in a business venture. It is clear, though, that the accused knew each other," said an investigating officer. "The accused have been identified as Sajal Bose (43), Sudip Mazumder (39), Suman Bose (51), Samir Kumar Deb (51), and Sandipan alias Chima Das (39), all residents of the Bijoygarh area. They have been booked under sections 140(2)/140(3)/3(5) of the BNS Act, 2023, pertaining to kidnapping for ransom," said Rupesh Kumar, Joint CP (Crime).

Lucknow: Chief Minister on Saturday said that under the rule of law, a litigant is as important as the bar and the bench. Speaking at the inauguration of the advocate chambers and a parking building on the Allahabad high court premises, the CM recalled a programme addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017 where he emphasised that the first condition of good governance is the rule of law. "Advocates strive for justice even though their working conditions are highly difficult. Many have to operate from broken chambers and even while sitting under trees," Yogi said. "Today is the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar. This is also the Amrit Mahotsav year of the implementation of the Constitution of India. The arrangements made at the court are excellent. Along with multi-level parking, the facility also includes advocate chambers, a cafeteria, a modern kitchen, and conference amenities. Speaking about the integrated court complex, the CM said that once in place, it would provide litigants with access to all judicial services under one roof, including chambers and parking for advocates, as well as housing facilities for judicial officers. He also spoke about the initiatives taken by the govt for advocates, underlining the increase in Advocate Fund from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, and the age limit from 60 to 70 years. "A separate corpus fund of Rs 500 crore has also been established which will be used in cases such as an accident involving an advocate. The trustee committee will utilise this fund to support the affected family," he said. He hailed the role of the Allahabad high court in managing the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, which was attended by over 66 crore people. "If everyone fulfils responsibilities in line with the spirit of the Constitution envisioned by Babasaheb BR Ambedkar, meaningful results can be achieved," he said.

CBI court convicts 3 Punjab cops in 1993 fake encounter

It, however, acquitted two officers due to a lack of evidence. The convicted officers are Karamjit Singh, the then ASI, who was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000. He was also sentenced to a one-year term under Section 342 of the IPC. Manjit Singh, then an inspector, was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined Rs 50,000 under section 364 of the IPC. The court also sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000 under Section 120-B of the IPC, along with a one-year sentence under Section 342 of the IPC. Gurmej Singh, then a sub-inspector, was sentenced to eight years and fined Rs 50,000 under section 364 of the IPC. Gurmej was also sentenced to five years and a Rs 50,000 fine under section 120-B of the IPC. Two constables, Kashmir Singh and Harjit Singh, were acquitted by the CBI court.
