Brookhaven's new city hall in budget and on schedule, mayor says
Brookhaven City Manager Christian Sigman says construction of the new city hall is both in budget and on schedule.
Channel 2's Wendy Corona got an exclusive first look inside the new government building.
Mayor John Park told Corona that the city's staff were looking forward to moving into what they call 'The People's House,' located on the corner of North Druid Hills and Peachtree Road.

Now, Brookhaven's new city hall will be a focal point and destination in the city, intentionally placed between the MARTA Station and Peachtree Road.
'We're actually building out multi-use paths and sidewalks from all corners of Brookhaven to end up here,' Sigman told Channel 2 Action News.
According to the city manager, 60% of the building will be for public use and 40% for city business.

The new city hall is the first public mass timber building in the state of Georgia, using sustainable wood that is both innovative and visually appealing.
Bill Barth, the McCarthy Barnsley Vice President of Operations, said the wood of the facility will 'remain exposed for the life of the project and that's one of the aspects of the long term beauty that it will add to this facility.'
From the roof, Program Manager Eric Johnson explained to Corona how they got the city hall's glass dome in place.
'We actually built it like this,' in Walton County first, then 'disassembled it, brought it here with cranes, erected it on site,' Johnson said.
Other city officials said the space would be iconic, for gathering the community, doing business or just having fun indoors and outside.
'Let's come together, let's enjoy this facility,' Park said. 'Let's enjoy building our house together.'
In the City Council chamber, there's a projection screen and room for about 150 people to watch movies together and the first wedding and reception in the space is already reserved for September.

It's been a bittersweet moment for students and alumni at Cedarville University as demolition crews tore down Williams Hall. It holds many memories for people who once lived in the dorm hall. He continued by saying, 'It's the people that made the difference, not the building.' Williams Hall was transitioned in 1981 to house campus offices, beginning with student services. In recent years, it has been home to several academic departments. This is one of the final steps to rebuilding the campus. The Bolthouse Academic Center will be built at that location, costing $35 million. 'That will house offices, classrooms, student collaboration space, conference rooms for many of our liberal arts programs,' Smith said. He continued by saying it's pivotal for the school's growth. 'It's thrilling to see what Cedarville is continuing to move forward in advance, especially in today's higher ed market, which is very, very challenging,' Smith said. Cobb County schools is ‘not going to invest' in storage for cellphones, superintendent says
Georgia lawmakers passed legislation to ban student access to phones during the legislative session. Now, the Cobb County School District says it won't be investing its budget into storage for phones at its schools. Cobb County School Superintendent Chris Ragsdale gave the update to parents, the school board and other community members at a meeting on Thursday. I can say that we are not going to invest any money into storage solutions for cellphones. The law allows us to determine what that storage place is going to be. And the storage place is going to be in a student's backpack or purse or pocketbook,' Ragsdale said. Policy decisions have a January 2026 deadline, with additional months for implementation. For Cobb County's schools, Ragsdale said the district is going to update the student code of conduct and ensure all students and parents know the new rules. 'We will be making updates to the student code of conduct so that all students will be aware, as will parents, what the punishment would be for that,' Ragsdale said. 'We are certainly going to adhere to the law and follow the law as we always do. But the bottom line is we're going to be focused on having school.' The phone ban passed the legislation as the 'Distraction-free Education Act,' which would block students in kindergarten through eighth grade from having phones out or accessible while in class. New Forest Park middle school won't be open in time for the school year
Clayton County Public Schools announced that the opening of the new Forest Park Middle School in August would be delayed as a result of 'unforeseen global supply chain disruptions.' Due to 'delays in the delivery of essential construction materials and equipment,' the Clayton County school district said it would not be able to finish construction on time for the start of the 2025-2026 school year. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'The district hopes to relocate these students to their new home on Finley Drive in Forest Park during the week of Fall Break, October 13-17, 2025,' officials said in a statement. Instead, students who are enrolled at FPMS will stay at their current, temporary school location, which the district said was Morrow High School on Old Rex Morrow Road. For students who were supposed to move to a swing space at the former Morrow High School, they will instead remain in classes at Fountain Elementary School until further notice.
