Junior GP rider Hakim shines with second-place finish in Portugal
PETALING JAYA: Rising national rider Hakim Danish Ramli kicked off his FIM Junior GP season with an impressive second-place finish in the opening round at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal on Sunday (May 4).
The 17-year-old started from third on the grid and found himself in a battle for second throughout the race with Finland's Rico Salmela and Ireland's Casey O'Gorman.
Hakim remained composed and secured second place on the last lap, with Salmela settling for third.
Spanish rider Brian Uriarte led the race from start to finish and emerged victorious.
This marks Hakim's third consecutive podium finish, following two second-place finishes at the Red Bull Rookies series at the Jerez Circuit in Spain last week.
Hakim will return to the Jerez Circuit for the Junior GP's second round, which takes place in June.

Hakim Danish dedicates Aragon win to all Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR: Motorcycle racer Hakim Danish Ramli is on track to becoming the first-ever Malaysian to win the Red Bull Rookies Cup title. With the season nearing the halfway mark, Hakim consolidated his position atop the championship standings after winning his first race of the season in Aragon, Spain (race two) yesterday (June 8). The 17-year-old now has 125 points to his name. Spanish duo Brian Uriarte (95 points) and Benat Fernandez (63 points) are second and third in the championship. Hakim dedicated his victory in Aragon, Spain to all Malaysians. Uriarte (+0.188s) and David Gonzalez (+0.195s) finished second and third in race two. "Obviously I'm really happy to win the race as it was quite challenging," said Hakim. "My tyre grip was fading so I had to manage it carefully and try my best to remain patient while staying with the lead group. "On the second last lap I made a mistake and forgot to downshift one more gear. I got overtaken and went down to seventh position. "I quickly focused on catching up and during the last corner was able to get on the throttle earlier and hit the line first. "Thank you to everyone who has supported me, this win is for all Malaysians." With four rounds and eight races remaining this season, the championship fight is far from over though Hakim's consistent performances this season will put pressure on his rivals. The Terengganu-born finished second in all his first five races of the season before winning yesterday. The Red Bull Rookies Cup is one of the key feeder series for the Moto3 World Championship. Former champions in the series who have gone on to shine include Johann Zarco, Jorge Martin and Pedro Acosta, among others Last month Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif disclosed that Hakim essentially has a seat waiting for him in Moto3 next season but must first prove himself worthy of the slot. Hakim is a product of SIC's two-wheel talent development programme which is run by ZK Racing. Mugello will host the next round of the Red Bull Rookies Cup on June 21-22.

Star of the show
LUIS Enrique got rid of the Galacticos at Paris St Germain and then became one himself. The Spanish coach, or perhaps he should be called an architect or a visionary, orchestrated a 5-0 destruction of Inter Milan in the Champions League final. The match was so clinically one-sided that it resembled a training session against an amateur team, rather than a three-time European Cup winner. Passing, movement, energy. Tireless pressing, forwards dropping back to defend, wingers protecting fullbacks. Was this really PSG? Yes. All of these attributes were on display in Munich as Luis Enrique joined an elite list of coaches to win the Champions League with multiple clubs. His other success was with Barcelona in 2015 – a 3-1 win against Juventus. 'This is the time for a great party and to make the most of this moment,' Luis Enrique said. 'I felt this connection with the players and the fans, I think it was a very strong connection throughout the season. ' Before Luis Enrique's arrival at the start of last season, such teamwork and unselfishness were not the hallmarks of PSG. Far from it. PSG coach Luis Enrique celebrates with his wife Elena Cullell and his son Pacho Martinez and daughter Sira Martinez after winning the Champions League final match against Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on May 31. — AP PSG had become increasingly complacent with star names like Neymar, Thiago Silva, Lionel Messi, Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kylian Mbappe. All fine players, some even great, yet all came and went without winning Europe's biggest club prize. Consequentially, the impatience of the club's Qatari owners led to a merry-go-round of coaches. When Luis Enrique took charge he boldly went against what PSG's owners had done since taking charge 14 years ago. It was no longer about pandering to star power and, even more importantly, it wasn't about who the new coach signed but rather who he sold. Out went Neymar and midfielder Marco Verratti, who made too many headlines off the field amid regular reports about their lifestyle and a penchant for partying. Then, during the off-season, came the biggest jolt of all as Mbappe – the club's record scorer – joined Real Madrid. How would PSG cope in the French league, let alone the Champions League, without a player they had overly relied on for so long? Rather well it turns out, although it took time and courage. On a rainy autumn night in London, Ousmane Dembele was dropped by Luis Enrique and PSG lost to Arsenal 2-0 in a dismally poor performance. Luis Enrique made it clear he was looking for dedication in his squad and this was non-negotiable, which is why he dropped Dembele. Critics lambasted his decision and doubts continued as PSG struggled in the new-look Champions League, losing to Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. PSG had become increasingly complacent despite having stars like Neymar (right) and Kylian Mbappe. As baffling a decision it was to some, it nevertheless showed that Luis Enrique was not going to give in to player power, like so many of his predecessors. Instead of demanding a transfer or moaning, Dembele said nothing. A few months later, he was transformed into a prolific scorer and is now a potential Ballon d'Or winner. The other turning point came on Jan 22. PSG faced possible elimination from the Champions League group stage if they lost at home to Manchester City, the 2023 champions. The nightmare scenario saw PSG trailing 2-0, with no Mbappe to bail the team out. What happened next ultimately defined their season, as the club's young players took the initiative and turned an inevitable-looking defeat into a 4-2 win. Noticeably, PSG's redesigned attack clicked with four different scorers rather than relying too heavily on one. The young guns carried on as a resurgent PSG added to their domestic double with the Champions League title for a remarkable treble – which Luis Enrique first achieved with Barcelona 10 years ago. It was deeply symbolic that PSG's best player against Inter was 19-year-old Desire Doue, who set up the first goal and then scored twice. Also, there were four different scorers on the night – just like against City. The last PSG goal was scored by Senny Mayulu, a 19-year-old talent who grew up in the north-eastern Parisian suburb of Le Blanc-Mesnil. — AP

Lewandowski Quits Poland Team Over Coach Michal Probierz
BARCELONA striker Robert Lewandowski said Sunday he would not play for his national team Poland so long as coach Michal Probierz remained in charge. The 36-year-old has played 158 times for Poland, scoring 85 goals, but earlier in the day was replaced as team captain by Piotr Zielinski. 'Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge,' Lewandowski said on X. But the former Bayern Munich centre-forward left the door open for a return. 'I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world,' he said. Probierz has been Poland coach since 2023, and led them to the Euro 2024 finals where they failed to win a game and were eliminated in the group stage. Earlier on Sunday, the Polish Football Association announced on its website the coach's decision to replace Lewandowski as skipper. 'The coach has personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the technical staff of his decision,' the federation said. Lewandowski is not part of the Polish squad in the current international window. According to Polish news agency PAP, the player asked to be excused to rest. Lewandoswki has just won a domestic Spanish treble with his club Barcelona. Poland beat Moldova 2-0 on June 6 in a friendly and faces Finland on Tuesday in Helsinki in Group G of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With two wins from as many matches, Poland top the group.
