DeMarcus Cousins suspended for season after physical altercations with fans

Former NBA All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins was suspended for the rest of the season in Puerto Rico's basketball league after a near-brawl with fans during a game on Monday. His team, the Guaynabo Mets, terminated his contract as well.
The 34-year-old Cousins, who played for seven teams during his NBA career, made an obscene gesture, exchanged words and repeatedly grabbed the arm of a fan sitting courtside Monday night before being taken away by his teammates.
Cousins received a second technical foul for his actions and was ejected. In the tunnel heading to the locker room, he argued with another fan whom he grabbed at, as well, while people in the stands threw liquids toward him. Cousins attempted to come back out and engage with the fans again after this, but was held back and escorted out.
Cousins received a $4,250 fine and could face an additional one of $5,750, the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league announced late Tuesday.
"As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise," the Mets said in a news release.
It was Cousins' second season playing in Puerto Rico. He was averaging 18.2 points per game with nine rebounds for a team that has a 9-18 record. In his previous stint with the Mets in the 2023 season, Cousins helped the team reach the semifinals.
In the NBA, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds over 11 seasons. The four-time All-Star's best season came with Sacramento in 2016-17, when he averaged 27.8 points.
After the NBA, besides his stop in Puerto Rico, Cousins also played in the Taiwan and Mongolia basketball leagues in 2024 and 2025, respectively, before returning to the Mets in May.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Mets ace Kodai Senga headed to IL with hamstring strain

New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga was throwing a gem Thursday during a win over the Washington Nationals before he went down with an injury away from the mound. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said postgame that Senga will go on the IL and undergo an MRI on Friday. Senga strained his right hamstring while covering first base for a putout in the top of the sixth inning. The right-hander had to jump to bring down a throw from first baseman Pete Alonso. Advertisement Senga made the catch and reached back with his right toe to touch the bag for the out, but then he grabbed at the back of his right leg. Senga, now in his third season with the Mets after a lengthy NPB career in Japan, trailed past the infield dirt and into the grass, eventually tumbling to the ground in pain. Mendoza informed reporters that Senga told him he felt something on the step before he leapt for Alonso's throw to first. The injury interrupted the 5 2/3 scoreless innings Senga had spun. He had conceded only one hit and given up just one walk on the afternoon. Washington staged a ninth-inning comeback yet fell one run short. New York prevailed 4-3 but at a cost. Advertisement Senga, 32, entered Thursday with a 1.59 ERA and a 2.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his first 12 starts this season. His record improved to 7-3 despite his mid-game exit. Unfortunately for the international standout, he also spent time on the IL last season. Actually, Senga was out most of 2024 with a shoulder capsule strain and then a calf injury. Senga's MRI on Friday will determine the severity of his hamstring strain and, likely, his recovery timeline. The Mets have the best record in baseball. With Thursday's win over the Nationals, they moved to 45-24.

Sports Seriously New York Mets ace Kodai Senga suffered a hamstring strain covering first base in a win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday and will be placed on the injured list, manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game. Senga came down awkwardly on first base after jumping to catch a toss from Pete Alonso in the sixth inning on a ground ball hit by C.J. Abrams. He recorded the out, but crumpled to the ground and clutched his right leg. After a brief conversation with staff, Senga was removed from the game and walked off under his own power. Senga will undergo further testing on Friday, June 13 to determine the severity of the hamstring issue. Mendoza told reporters that after leaving the game, Senga had asked his interpreter to let Alonso know he had felt something in his hamstring a step before jumping to receive the throw – and that it wasn't the first baseman's high throw that caused the injury. Senga, whose 1.47 ERA is the best in baseball, was cruising along in a scoreless outing until the injury forced him out of the game. He picked up the win, improving to 7-3 in 13 starts this season. The unfortunate scene was reminiscent of Senga's only regular-season start from 2024, during which he which he suffered a calf injury that kept him out of action until the postseason. Prior to that outing, Senga had missed the first half of his second MLB season with arm problems. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
