Ireland Bans Trade with Israeli Settlements

Ireland has become the first European country to introduce legislation banning trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The move, announced by Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Simon Harris on Wednesday, marks a significant political and legal stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The proposed legislation, titled the General Scheme of the Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2024, aims to prohibit the import of goods originating from Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law.
The Irish government has
approved
the bill in principle, and it will now be referred to the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade for detailed examination before being formally legislated.
The decision follows the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion issued on 19 July 2024, which further reinforced the legal basis for such trade bans.
Once enacted, the importation of goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank or East Jerusalem would constitute a criminal offence under Ireland's Customs Act 2015. Irish customs authorities would also have the power to inspect and seize prohibited goods.
Harris explained that the legislation will utilize the postal code system currently used by the European Union to differentiate between goods produced within Israel's internationally recognized borders and those originating from settlements.
He added that Ireland's stance is rooted in a firm commitment to international law and human rights, stating that Israeli settlements are illegal and undermine the viability of a two-state solution. Harris reaffirmed Ireland's broader goal of supporting sustainable peace in the region through legal and diplomatic means.
Despite the lack of an EU-wide response following the ICJ's 2024 opinion, Harris said Ireland would continue pressing the European Commission to present concrete proposals to address imports from illegal settlements. He expressed hope that Ireland's action would set a precedent for other nations.
He acknowledged that the proposed legislation has generated considerable public interest at home and said he looks forward to parliamentary debate and engagement with civil society.
Harris concluded by stating that Ireland unequivocally rejects what he called the ongoing genocide in Gaza, reiterating Dublin's commitment to upholding justice and international law through all available channels.

Egypt FM urges halt to Israeli aggression on Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank
Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty urged the international community on Thursday to assume its role in stopping the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, during a phone call with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot. Both ministers discussed the latest regional developments, particularly the situation in Gaza. They stressed the importance of resuming the ceasefire and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian and relief aid amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip. According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty highlighted the intensive efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the US to achieve a swift and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. He also stressed the need to achieve a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian cause through the implementation of the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Furthermore, the two sides addressed the postponed UN two-state solution conference in New York. The conference, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, was initially scheduled to be held on 17-20 June, but was delayed indefinitely due to the Israel-Iran war. During the call, both ministers agreed on the importance of Iran and Israel fully committing to the ceasefire. They emphasized the importance of taking practical and concrete steps that contribute to de-escalation and pave the way for political and diplomatic solutions. Court rejects Netanyahu's call to postpone corruption trial hearings - Region
An Israeli court on Friday rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to postpone giving testimony in his corruption trial, after US President Donald Trump said the case should be cancelled. Netanyahu's lawyer on Thursday asked the court to excuse the prime minister from hearings over the next two weeks, saying he needed to concentrate on "security issues" after 12 days of Israeli war on Iran and direct Iranian retaliation against Israel earlier this month. The Jerusalem district court said in a judgement published online that "in its current form (his request) does not provide a basis or detailed justification for the cancellation of the hearings". Trump on Wednesday described the case against Netanyahu as a "witch hunt", saying the trial "should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero". He also called Netanyahu Israel's "Great War Time Prime Minister", despite a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) demanding his arrest over war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza — a war characterised as genocide by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and several aid and rights groups. Netanyahu thanked Trump for his support during Israel's brief war against Iran, which Tel Aviv launched on 13 June, culminating in US strikes on three nuclear sites and ending with a US-brokered ceasefire on 24 June. Netanyahu is currently on trial in three corruption cases. Israeli Airstrikes Pound Southern Lebanon: Over 20 Raids Shake Nabatieh
Ahmed Emam Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes on southern Lebanon late Friday, in what has been described as one of the heaviest escalations in recent weeks. According to Al-Qahera News, the raids struck multiple locations, with the heaviest bombardment focused on the skies over Nabatieh, as well as targets both south and north of the Litani River. Sanjab reported that the assault involved no fewer than 20 airstrikes, suggesting a large-scale offensive. The strikes created a fierce belt of fire across parts of the Nabatieh district, triggering successive explosions that echoed across southern Lebanon and were heard as far away as the cities of Tyre and Sidon and surrounding regions. Sanjab added that new explosions were heard following the initial wave of attacks, indicating either continued bombardment or secondary strikes on additional targets, leaving the security situation in southern Lebanon highly tense and on alert.
