Bellamy wants Wales to ‘honour the shirt' by not swapping
Wales resume their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup finals this week with a double header at home to Liechtenstein and away to star-studded Belgium.
Taking on the Red Devils in their Brussels backyard is Wales' biggest test in Group J, but boss Bellamy believes the culture and mentality fostered since his appointment last July and the eight-game unbeaten run that has followed will stand Wales in good stead.
Bellamy insists Wales should not be considered underdogs – 'small footballing nations don't expect to qualify for World Cups, and we do' – and keeping hold of the jersey after the final whistle is among the pillars of his philosophy.
'You have to honour your shirt,' said Bellamy. 'The only time you give it up is when you lose your place and someone else takes it, but you've left it in a good place.
'That's a no-brainer to me and I believe the players love that as well.
'Our shirt is the most important shirt in football. We don't give that away, you can't give it away.'
Asked if not swapping shirts extended to Belgian midfield maestro De Bruyne, one of the Premier League's all-time greats at Manchester City, Bellamy replied: 'I don't think it is even worth having a conversation about.
'I don't need to answer that question. It's not going to happen.
'If I'm an aspiring young player then I want that (Wales) shirt. I see ours as the most important shirt, nobody else's.'
Wales opened their World Cup qualifying campaign in March with a 3-1 home victory over Kazakhstan and a 1-1 draw in North Macedonia.
David Brooks equalised with virtually the last kick in Skopje to protect Bellamy's unbeaten record after Wales won promotion to the top tier of the Nations League in the autumn.
Bellamy draws parallels with basic habits on the football field to a 1980s Hollywood martial arts drama success at the box office.
'Have you ever watched The Karate Kid?' said Bellamy.
'Does he do karate straight away? No – it's Mr Miyagi who decides.
'It's wax on, wax off. He paints the fence. He teaches him all these types of rules before he can do karate, so that he has the disciplines.
'It's about basics, habits. If you don't have that intensity without the ball, if your body language is poor and you're waving your hands, it's the wrong team for you. This is not your team.'

Manchester United legend Gary Neville says Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho all have to leave the club. But the overhaul has just begun and United are intent on ripping up Amorim's misfiring squad, with several first-team stars facing uncertain futures and seemingly heading for the exit door. Discussing potential comings and goings on the latest episode of It's Called Soccer, Neville argued that all three needed to make way, plus Garnacho – following the winger's public falling out with Amorim. However, Neville is adamant that United must do everything in their power to prevent academy product Kobbie Mainoo from leaving, with the midfielder being linked to Chelsea. 'On these five I'm pretty certain. Marcus Rashford has to leave for him and the club. I think that ship has sailed and he needs to find himself another club,' the former United and England right-back said. I would worry that Aston Villa haven't announced that they're keeping him already because I think that could have been an easy deal to do with United if they were going to keep him, so it sounds to me like Villa aren't going to keep him. I would say for Marcus' sake and for United's sake that it feels like that path has come to an end.' 'I'd be a bit concerned that Chelsea haven't made the noises that they're going to keep him. 'Again, Manchester United have to make sure they part ways with him and, for Jadon's point of view, he has to make sure that he parts ways with Manchester United.' Antony enjoyed a remarkable return to form at Real Betis in the second half of the campaign, racking up nine goals and five assists for the La Liga outfit. But Amorim has closed the door on Antony's return to the first-team and Neville feels United have little option but to sanction the Brazilian's exit. 'I can imagine he was absolutely going under while he was at Old Trafford,' Neville said. 'He's gone to Spain and having seen a couple of players that I played with not do it Old Trafford but do it in Spain… I think he's suited down to the ground and it's been proven. 'Over there, there's a different tactical awareness, there's a different technical ability and there's a way of playing that's just more suited to players. 'The players I'm referring to are players like Kleberson or Diego Forlan. It didn't quite happen for them but they had really careers and I think there are players like that who just aren't suited to a league. 'I think Antony is perfect for Spain and, again, somebody who Manchester United should facilitate leaving. It's best for Antony and best for the club.' Discussing Garnacho's situation, Neville went on: 'I think if players are taking on the manager and if players are questioning the manager in public through social media or other means, the manager has to win. 'If the manager doesn't win, the manager has to leave and I don't think that's going to happen this time. 'I think Garnacho will leave purely because of that, I think they've had enough. Garnacho can play in the Premier League, no doubt, but I think he'll love it and thrive in Spain. 'He'll probably be someone next season that we're all looking back on thinking, 'Why didn't Manchester United keep him?', there's an element of that, but I think he has to go. 'That's not me throwing my toys out the pram and saying, 'Get him out the club!'… no, for him and the club, I think it's right that he goes. 'Those four players should leave, not just because Manchester United should let them go, but because they should go and find themselves a place in their lives where they can go and play football because it's not at Old Trafford.' There have been some rumours that United could be open to the potential sale of Mainoo, which would represent 'pure profit' given the England international came through the club's academy. But according to Neville, Amorim should be building his midfield around Mainoo and the thought of the midfielder leaving is a 'step too far'. 'Mainoo, no. That's a step too far,' the eight-time Premier League winner argued. 'If we can't give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that two in midfield… I look at Mainoo and the way he plays football and I think a top club would want him. 'Why can't we make him a top player? If he's one of ours and he's shown talent. 'I don't know what's gone on there in the last few months. He's obviously had some injuries which has caused him a problem so he needs to stay fit, but I'd like to think he could be one of that two in midfield that Ruben Amorim plays. 'It's probably not Casemiro as his partner and it's probably not Ugarte as his partner, it's probably someone else in there who is better than those two, if I'm being honest. 'But we should be building around Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield and not because he's come through the ranks.' Neville is 'excited' by the arrival of Cunha and hopes the attacker can be a 'spark' capable of getting fans off their seats at the Theatre of Dreams. 'When your club signs a player, you should be excited. We know some of the players that play in his position are going to leave,' he said. 'We know that United haven't had players in that position this season because Rashford, Sancho, Antony have all been put out on loan, Garnacho is more than likely going to go with what's happened in the last week. 'Cunha's goals have been growing in the last couple of years. He had a decent return for a club that has been near the bottom of the Premier League than the top. 'Am I excited? Yeah, I am excited by it because United need players who know the Premier League, have got a bit more robustness about them in terms of what they've been through before and being at Wolves… that'll be tough because they lose quite a few matches. 'I'm hoping he comes to Old Trafford and sees this vast pitch, this amazing stadium, with 75,000 fans who love a player who can take someone on, someone who can travel with the ball. Ryan Mason leaves Tottenham to take over as West Brom head coach
Mason quickly emerged as a leading candidate for the Championship club after they dismissed Tony Mowbray on April 21. A decade on from earning his solitary England cap against Italy, the London-born coach will embark on his first managerial role in the 2025-26 season. Highly-rated coach Mason held talks with Belgian club Anderlecht in October before a mutual decision was made to remain at Spurs, which enabled him to play his part in the club's first trophy since 2008. After two previous caretaker stints at Tottenham, including leading the club in the 2021 Carabao Cup final, Mason has long been tipped for a future in management. After a further two years as Tottenham first-team coach, Mason will take over West Brom after they finished ninth in the Championship. Liam Delap's a snip at £30m but only if Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca plays to his strengths, writes CHRIS SUTTON
Funny to think when I moved to Chelsea in 1999 for £10million, I was their record signing. Now, £30m for Liam Delap would be an absolute bargain, a total no-brainer from the Blues' perspective. Chelsea can hand him a hefty salary boost and even then, on a 15-year deal or whatever ludicrous length of contract is eventually signed by the 22-year-old Englishman, he's cheaper than the other striker options they could have gotten. I see Delap as an all-rounder; he's shown why he can be a finisher, a link-up man and a big lump all in one package. I like that he mixes it up, sometimes playing with his back to goal and other times sprinting in behind, and how he can unleash clean strikes with both the left and right feet as defenders never know which avenue to show him down. But once they have him, Chelsea need to make sure they play to his strengths. Cole Palmer was interesting after the Conference League final, essentially admitting he went rogue when he set up Enzo Fernandez to score the equaliser in that 4-1 victory over Real Betis: 'I was sick of getting the ball and going backwards and sideways.' Delap will be playing for Enzo Maresca next season after Chelsea agreed a £30m transfer deal Enzo Maresca needs to make sure he does not stifle Palmer's creativity moving forward, and that Delap is supplied with the chances from which he can score. It helps that Ipswich tried to play a possession-based philosophy when they were in the Premier League. Sometimes to their own downfall as they finished the season with the fewest crosses out of any club. I'm sure Delap, standing tall at 6ft 1in, would have liked the odd ball whipped into the box to attack. Chelsea are not as allergic at crossing as Ipswich, but they should also get him running into the channels, holding up the ball like we know he can, linking up with the wingers and winding up the opposition so that no defender ever thinks he is in for an easy afternoon. He's no shy bairn, Delap. He will let you know he's there, as he did when Chelsea visited Portman Road last season and he immediately barged into Tosin Adarabioyo and then Levi Colwill. At Chelsea, Delap is set to be surrounded by elite team-mates, not least Palmer, who played with him at Manchester City's academy. Palmer proved a £42.5m steal, and Delap has the opportunity to follow in his footsteps. Maybe his £30m fee can help in that regard because it will alleviate the pressure on this English striker who, in my opinion, will only get better and better with time.
