Novak Djokovic clamps Carlos Alcaraz for lacking 'respect' as rival calls out rival's Wimbledon 'big lie'
The pair returned to SW19 for media duties before the 2025 edition and couldn't resist some mischief
Mischievous Novak Djokovic isn't buying rival Carlos Alcaraz's fawning claims of respect after being mercilessly put to the sword in consecutive Wimbledon Finals.
The pair returned to SW19 for media duties before the 2025 edition and the amiable Spaniard was effusive in his praise of the man he has defeated in back-to-back centre court Finals at Wimbledon.
And the 22-year-old - already a five-time major winner - reckons the most decorated man of the Open era was also exaggerating his feelings about their recent meetings.
Reigning and defending champion Alcaraz said: "He said he was privileged to play this year because of me, because I was defending champion but that was a big lie.
"I'm privileged to play with a seven-time champion here, it's crazy what he has done. Not only on grass but it's a privilege.'
But Djokovic couldn't resist a chance to lob one back across the court.
The 38-year-old teased: I'm looking for a little bit more respect from him. He's talking about respect but the last two years he didn't give me the respect on this court.'

Emma Raducanu has responded to rumours of a blossoming romance between herself and her US Open doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday Emma Raducanu has laughed off suggestions of a romantic relationship with Carlos Alcaraz on the eve of Wimbledon. Raducanu will team up with Alcaraz to play mixed doubles at the US Open later this year – and the exciting pairing has led to suggestions of something more between them. The British No.1 is preparing to face teenage wildcard Mimi Xu in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday. The world No.38 is focused on the match after competing at Eastbourne, but still had to address rumours about Alcaraz in her pre-tournament press conference in SW19. Raducanu has been friends with the Spaniard for four years and they were spotted practising together at Wimbledon on Friday. Asked if they had discussed tactics for the US Open, she replied: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian. 'Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' Later in the press conference, came the question she must have known was coming. Asked if there was any substance in the romance rumours, Raducanu replied with a smile: 'We're just good friends.' The interview moderator then stepped in to end the questions, prompting a laugh from Raducanu, who added: 'Way to wrap up!' Raducanu and Alcaraz are both 22 years old and the British star recently explained how they became friends. She said: 'I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021. 'And I remember he was always playing the day before me and I was playing like the second day of the round. And I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. 'And I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage and it was really cool to kind of, I guess, go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, but we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice.' She added: 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection, because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you.'

The saddest part came on the day they took down the sign saying Murray Park at Rangers' training complex and started to call the place Auchenhowie instead. It was a move that symbolised a name being removed from a club's history. But I still laugh at the day when I was sitting in his office in Edinburgh and he called on his secretary to bring me in a bottle of wine to take home as a present. And he told her to make it a good one. Of course, I Googled the name on the bottle later on to see just how expensive it was. Then I could decide whether I could drink it or put it up on eBay. Sergio Garcia has secret Ryder Cup weapon for team Europe as he eyes dream double
The Spanish star is still fighting to be at Royal Portrush and Bethpage Fired-up Sergio Garcia reckons his valuable Ryder Cup experience could make him a big asset to Europe as he eyes a dream Bethpage and Open double. The 45-year-old is currently playing the LIV event in Dallas aiming to book his ticket to next month's cracker at Royal Portrush. If Garcia ends the Texas event on Sunday evening in the top five of the individual LIV standings and top of those stars not already qualified for the 153rd Championship, he'll be heading to Northern Ireland. Currently fourth, those above him at the start of play, Joaquin Niemann, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, have secured their spots in the Open field and Garcia can join them if he stays in his current position. Garcia hopes an outing at The Open will see him complete a special set of summer tournaments during a huge five weeks where he will also tee-up back on the DP World Tour at next week's BMW International Open in Germany and at LIV Andalucia on his beloved Valderrama and in the UK. He's excited for the challenges and, speaking to Marca, he said: 'I'd say every moment is important, but without a doubt, these five consecutive tournaments I probably have now are important because of their position in the season and because there's a Major in between. 'Starting now in Dallas, then the BMW International Open, Valderrama, which I'm really looking forward to because I'm defending the individual and team titles. If I play well here in Dallas, I'll qualify for the British Open and wouldn't have to play qualifiers. 'Finally [LIV] UK. It's obviously an important part of the year and I have to try to do my best. 'I've always loved and been motivated to play in Spain. Every time I play in my country is very special, and fortunately, I've had a lot of success in my career when I've played tournaments at home. 'It's beautiful, it motivates me a lot to play in front of my fans, but Valderrama is even more special because it's my favourite course and I've always been very good at it. 'If everything goes well and nothing unusual happens physically, I'd definitely like to be at the Spanish Open. 'I'll try to play in some other tournaments at the end of summer or late fall.' Garcia firmly believes he still has the chance within this key current timeframe to convince captain Luke Donald he is worthy of a place in the side for the clash against United States. Europe's record points scorer feels he can be an asset and played alongside the skipper when the continent was last successful on away soil at Medinah in 2012. He said: 'There are still almost three months to go until the Ryder Cup, although a little less time until the team selection and I think I'm in a position where I would have chosen it at the beginning of the year. 'If they had told me I was going to be in this position and with a chance of being on the Ryder Cup team, obviously I would have taken it without a doubt. 'Now what I have to do is keep showing my strengths, keep showing my golf, especially what I showed in the first third of the year. 'The good thing is that I know I'm on Luke's ballot and I just have to keep showing that I can do good things and that I can help the team. The Ryder Cup is my favourite golf tournament in the world. 'It would be incredible to be able to compete in another Ryder Cup, especially knowing that in New York, at Bethpage, it's going to be tough and maybe a little experience always comes in handy.'
