Killer names 'worst thing' about Death Row and the terrifying sound at night
Double killer Charles Thompson spoke to broadcaster Dan Walker for a documentary about capital punishment and he opened up about the 'worst thing' about death row
A double killer who has been waiting for his execution for 25 years revealed the worst thing about being on Death Row.
Charles Thompson was convicted of a double homicide in 1998 after shooting ex-girlfriend Dennise Hayslip, 39, and her new boyfriend, Darren Cain, 30. He called it a 'crime of passion', claiming he was "immature" and struggling with alcohol and drug abuse at the time. In 2005, he managed to briefly escape prison, but was soon returned to solitary confinement, where he has spent most of the 21st century.
But he was allowed out of his cell to speak to news anchor Dan Walker for a Channel 5 documentary called Dead Man Walking: Dan Walker on Death Row. Former BBC Breakfast host Dan asked Thompson whether he thought about his death, saying he hoped the question wasn't 'too morbid'.
Giving his response, the killer said: 'Oh, it is the most unnatural thing to know you are fixing to die and watch the clock tick down. It is not natural. You are not supposed to know your time.
'The execution nightmare, the execution dream, is probably the worst thing. You wake up with a cold sweat and you are like… that was just too real.
'I had watched friends be executed, close friends, and I have heard guys crying at night.' He also complained about only being allowed out of his cell for up to four hours per week, saying 'people have pets that get out of their cages more than that'.
As for daily life behind bars, he added: 'We are held to solitary confinement as you probably know. So my day starts usually around six, seven in the morning.
'We just got TVs a year ago. For 24 years, I didn't have any TV to look at. I have been reading books for 24 years like a book worm.' Laughing, he added: 'I am very well read.'
Killing his former girlfriend meant her son, Wade, who was just 13 at the time, had to navigate the rest of his life without a mother. Opening up on the documentary, he said: 'I can remember being pulled out of class by my vice principle and pulling into our youth counsellor's office and them explaining what had happened.
'And I remember going to the hospital and waiting that night and ultimately seeing her on the bed… so that was a different experience.'
It was put to Wade that his mum's killer called it a 'scuffle', and he replied: 'The evidence suggests that he kicked in the door that morning and there were a total of seven shots fired.
'So much so that he had to reload and then the gun jammed and could not be fired again. One shot was put to her cheek and then blasted to the other side of her jaw bone. He said that he knew she had been hit because he could see her teeth flying out of her mouth… so that is point blank rage.'
Wade then explained how there was a time in his life when he would have a recurring dream about Thompson shooting him. And giving his own take on the day of the killing, Thompson told the camera: 'It was the worst day of my life.
'I regret it. I wish I could take it back. When this case happened 27 years ago, I was 27, almost 28, I was an alcoholic, I was strung out on cocaine, using hard drugs. I was still very immature for 27. I had a lot of anger issues and I was wild; I was out of control.'
Thompson remains on Death Row and is still waiting for his execution date.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's furious row that 'ripped the monarchy to pieces'
Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton were said to have had a furious row during a clear-the-air meeting in 2018 A Royal expert has described a crucial meeting between Prince William, Prince Harry, Kate and Meghan as an event that "ripped the monarchy to pieces". The explosive encounter reportedly took place in June 2018 when the Prince and Princess of Wales sat down with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex amid rising tensions after Harry and Meghan's wedding. The situation escalated post-ceremony, as recounted in Prince Harry's memoir 'Spare', who cited early turbulence involving his wife and his sister-in-law. He detailed a dispute concerning bridesmaid dresses prior to his wedding which purportedly left Meghan in tears, mentioning that Kate "grimaced" when Meghan used her lip gloss. In an effort to resolve matters, both couples convened for a candid discussion after the Sussexes returned from their honeymoon. The atmosphere during the chat reportedly grew so fraught that it caused physical signs of distress in the Princess of Wales. According to Harry's depiction in 'Spare', the intense air-clearing session at Kensington Palace saw Kate demand an apology from Meghan while clenching a leather sofa, which saw her "fingers turn white". Harry detailed in 'Spare' that Kate's request stemmed from a comment Meghan made about her pregnancy hormones, referring to it as "baby brain". Meghan apparently offered her apologies, justifying the contentious remark as commonplace amongst her circle of friends, reports the Mirror. The situation escalated when Harry alleged that William "pointed a finger at Meg", and reportedly admonished: "Well, it's rude, Meghan. These things are not done here." Harry claims Meghan retorted: "If you don't mind, keep your finger out of my face." In the new Channel 5 documentary 'Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy', Royal commentators suggest this encounter was pivotal for the Sussexes, setting in motion their eventual departure from Royal duties. Richard Kay of the Daily Mail posited that this was the moment "the seed of Megxit was sewn", while his colleague Sarah Hewson reflected: "Had that meeting been a success, had they been able to put their differences aside, things would have been very different indeed." Newsweek's chief Royal correspondent Jack Royston commented: "If only they'd listened. If Meghan had listened to what was being said to her, she could have changed way back in 2018. "And even if they had still quit the monarchy, they could have saved themselves so much pain and so much conflict." He went on: "What happened in that room back in June 2018 was the defining element of the relationship between the two couples that ripped the monarchy to pieces." Valentine Low, a noted Royal author, also remarked: "They had pathetic little differences that should have been sorted out in two minutes. But it helped fuel the flames." Harry's candid reflections in his memoir 'Spare' come as Meghan shared her experiences with the royals on their Netflix series. Recounting their earliest encounters, she expressed surprise at the private formality of the Royal family members. In the second instalment of their six-part Netflix documentary, 'Harry and Meghan', the Duchess discussed her first impressions of her brother-in-law and wife Kate. "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot," Meghan explained. "I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits." The mother-of-two elaborated further on the Royal customs saying: "I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. "There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me." Kate and Meghan's bombshell disagreement as 'pathetic differences' exposed
A tense clear the air meeting between Meghan and Kate was revealed by Prince Harry in Spare - and experts have explained how it changed the course of the monarchy A clear-the-air meeting between Waleses and the Sussexes "ripped the monarchy to pieces", a royal expert has claimed. Back in June 2018, the Prince and Princess of Wales met with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after tension had brewed between the couples after Harry and Meghan's wedding. It came after, as Harry recounted in his memoir Spare, that his new wife seemed at loggerheads with his sister-in-law in the early days of their romance. He says the two women had a row over bridesmaid dresses in the lead-up to his wedding that left Meghan in tears and that Kate "grimaced" when the duchess borrowed her lipgloss. Both couples decided to have a clear-the-air chat shortly after the Sussexes' honeymoon. However, things got so tense that Kate's fingers supposedly went white. Harry describes the moment in his memoir after he and Meghan were invited over to see William and Kate for tea at their Kensington Palace apartment. He recalls how both couples aired their grievances including Kate, who asked for an apology from Meghan as she gripped a leather sofa so tightly her "fingers were white". According to Spare, Kate wanted Meghan to say sorry for making a remark about her hormones and having "baby brain" while she was pregnant. The book then recounts how Meghan apologised and explained that is how she speaks to her friends. But the encounter took a turn when Harry claims William "pointed a finger at Meg", then allegedly blasted: "Well, it's rude, Meghan. These things are not done here." To which he says Meghan responded: "If you don't mind, keep your finger out of my face." Now in a new Channel 5 documentary, 'Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy', royal experts believe this meeting was a turning point for the Sussexes as set the wheels in motion for Harry and Meghan to dramatically quit their royal roles. According to the Daily Mail's Richard Kay, this was the meeting that saw "the seed of Megxit sewn" while fellow expert Sarah Hewson said: "Had that meeting been a success, had they been able to put their differences aside, things would have been very different indeed." And chief royal correspondent from Newsweek, Jack Royston said: "If only they'd listened. If Meghan had listened what was being said to her, she could have changed way back in 2018. And even if they had still quit the monarchy, they could have saved themselves so much pain and so much conflict. "What happened in that room back in June 2018 was the defining element of the relationship between the two couples that ripped the monarchy to pieces." While respected royal author Valentine Low added: "They had pathetic little differences that should have been sorted out in two minutes. But it helped fuel the flames." Harry's observation in Spare comes after Meghan took aim at Kate during her and Harry's Netflix docuseries. As she recalled their first meeting she said she was "surprised" by the behind-the-scenes formality of members of the royal family. Speaking in episode two of the six-part Harry & Meghan docuseries, she said: "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits. "I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me." Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy, airs on Channel 5 on Saturday at 9.20pm.

The Yorkshire Vet's heartbreaking news before welcoming new baby girl
David Melleny and his wife Megan could not be happier in their baby bubble - but as they reveal, they were going through a very sad time when they found out the good news The Yorkshire Vet 's David Melleney - though he's the first to admit that becoming a first-time dad is quite a learning curve - is in a happy baby bubble with wife Megan, 28, after the couple welcomed their first child on 19 May. And as they welcome OK! into their rural home in Holmfirth, Yorkshire for an exclusive interview, they also reveal why their journey was so emotional at times. Speaking of his adorable firstborn, a little girl named Lilah Rose, David revealed: 'She's been amazing so far,' he beams, sitting next to wife Megan and Lilah, who has an impressive head of baby-soft dark hair. 'She's been sleeping and eating, but we've been warned that everything can change.' The Channel 5 star married dentist Megan in a beautiful ceremony at Chateau du Doux, in France's Dordogne, in September 2023 – and Lilah is the the first grandchild for Megan's mum and dad, Steve and Della. But as the couple explain, when they found out they were expecting, Megan's family were going through a difficult time, a double loss which made them cautious about finding the right moment to break their happy news. 'I'd lost both my grandmas in the space of a month, and the day we found out was the day we were clearing out Nan's stuff from her house. My period was late, but I thought it might have been stress, so I did a test to check. It was a surreal and very emotional day", says Megan, reflectively. 'We decided to wait a couple of weeks to tell people, including Mum and Dad. My mum and my nan were really close so I just didn't think it was the right time. When we did tell them, everyone was overjoyed. I have one younger brother and we were pretty close to our cousins growing up, so the house was always full. I always knew I wanted to be a mum. No one in my generation has yet had a baby, so Lilah is already very spoiled.' Aside from the sadness of family losses, Megan says her pregnancy was in general smooth-sailing - confessing she only stopped working when it got to the point where her bump made it hard to "bend over and use my arms'. And thankfully, after what in the end was a very swift labour, Lilah was born happy and healthy. The couple spent one night in hospital before returning home for the very first time as a family of three, to a waiting charcuterie board and a bottle of wine which had been sweetly prepared by David's brother Peter and his parents Paul and Vicky. 'So I had a glass of wine and cried as I ate Parma ham, because that's how emotional you are when you get out of hospital,' Megan laughs. Fans of The Yorkshire Vet can also expect to see Lilah make her TV debut soon, as David and Megan introduce their new addition to The Yorkshire Vet viewers in a special episode which includes her arrival.
