Ex-England Cricketer's Curious Praise: 'Rishabh Pant Is A Beggar To Play Against'

Former England cricketer David Lloyd described Rishabh Pant as a 'beggar to play against' in a curious praise for the Indian wicketkeeper.
Former England cricket David Lloyd called Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant a 'beggar to play against', a curious way to praise him as a nuisance for his opponents. Lloyd remarked that his batting style must be rubbing England up the wrong way, before adding that 'we are in for a real treat' to see him this series.
Pant became the first-ever Indian wicketkeeper to hit twin centuries in a Test by following his 134 in the first innings with a 140-ball 118 in the second on Monday (June 23) at Headingley. After celebrating the first with a somersault — that made him even popular among the hosts — he offered a muted expression for the second.
'I bet he's a beggar to play against as he rubs the opposition up the wrong way. We are in for a real treat watching him throughout this five-Test series," he added.
Lloyd also praised Indian batters' defensive technique throughout the Test, appreciating their ability to mix entertaining hitting with the old 'digging in'.
'A batsman needs a good defence in Test cricket, as KL Rahul proved during his brilliant innings. Cricket lovers appreciate when a batsman has to dig in before accelerating when the going gets easier. For all their Twenty20 experience in the IPL, India's batsmen have shown they also have sound defensive techniques and excellent concentration," Lloyd said.
Rahul also scored 137 as India got bowled out for 364 in the second innings, setting England a target of 371. Of that, the hosts scored 21 without losing wickets by Stumps on Day 4.
Lloyd also expressed slight worry at Shoaib Bashir's ineffectiveness in the Test, with the spinner managing just three wickets across the two innings.
'Shoaib Bashir is 21 and he already has 61 Test wickets. He gets total backing from Ben Stokes. However, will he become a problem later in the series? India are pretty comfortable against him. In the first innings, he took one for 100. In the second, it was two for 90 and he went at more than four an over. What will England do with him now?" he asked.

Mohammed Siraj hurls mouthful after Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley get under his skin with time-wasting tactics

Tempers flared in the final session of Day 5 of the first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds. India pacer Mohammed Siraj was not pleased with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley taking their own time and not getting ready in time. India and Siraj were desperate to get another over in and let the England openers face the music against Jasprit Bumrah. However, Duckett and Crawley ensured that India did not get another over in and the hosts walked into the lunch break with all ten wickets intact. Mohammed Siraj was not pleased with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley (Screengrabs - JioHotstar) Before the final ball of the 30th over, Crawley pulled away very late, at the final minute, as he pointed towards the sight screen. The Indian speedster sprinted back to his mark again. Crawley safely defended the ball, and the umpires called time, signalling the players to make their way to their respective dressing rooms for the lunch break. Siraj was not pleased with the chain of events one bit, and he had a few words to say to both Duckett and Crawley. When the players were making their way to the dressing room, KL Rahul was also seen having words with both the English openers. However, this chat looked friendly as there were smiles all around. In the first innings, he exchanged a few words with Harry Brook after the England middle-order batter sent him on a leather hunt. In the first session on Day 5, the Indian attack of Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja failed to take a single wicket as England strengthened their grip on the contest. Ben Duckett hits fifty In the first session on Day 5, Ben Duckett slammed his second fifty of the contest, after having gone past the 50-run mark in the first innings as well. Both Duckett and Crawley kept the Indian bowlers at bay as the duo mixed caution with aggression to keep the run-scoring brisk. The duo rotated the strike constantly, along with dispatching loose balls for deliveries. In the first session, the visitors seemed rattled as they made 6-7 requests for a ball change. Their request was finally listened to in the 27th over, when on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel decided to change the ball as it did not pass the ring test. England reached the score of 117/0 at Lunch on Day 5. The hosts are still 254 runs away from a famous win with all ten wickets in hand. Earlier, India set England a target of 371 following centuries by KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant on the fourth day.

'Ek Taraf Se Mohammed Hai, Ek Taraf Se Krishna': Gill's Stump Mic Audio Goes Viral

Last Updated: The incident took place during the 17th over of England's second innings of the first Test currently underway at Headingley in Leeds against India. Jasprit Bumrah is leading India's bowling attack in the first Test against England, which is taking place at Headingley in Leeds, and he is supported by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. During the fifth day's play in Leeds, Bumrah opened India's attack, and after his first spell, Krishna replaced him. During Krishna's second over of the second innings, Indian men's Test cricket team captain Shubman Gill was heard saying, 'Ek taraf se Mohammed hai, ek taraf se Krishna; dono tabahi macha denge aaj." The clip of Gill's stump mic audio was shared by fans on X, and within no time it went viral on the internet. SHUBMAN GILL ON THE STUMPS MIC:'Ek taraf Mohammad hain, doosri taraf Krishna. Dono tabahi macha denge". 😭 — ʟᴏᴡᴋᴇʏ ᴍᴇᴍᴇʀ (@memerbhoiii) June 24, 2025 😭😭😭😭😭 — Rathore (@bcci_x) June 24, 2025 Indian team management and fans will have high expectations from Siraj and Krishna in the second innings. Krishna picked up three wickets for India in the first innings but conceded runs at an economy of 6.40, whereas Siraj finished with figures of 2 for 122 in 27 overs. India rode on centuries from KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) to post a total of 364 runs in the 2nd innings on Monday (June 23) and set a total of 371 runs for England to chase down in the fourth innings of the first Test. England finished the fourth day's play at 21 without loss in six overs and added 96 more runs to their total in the first session of the fifth day's play without losing any wicket. Ben Duckett was batting on 64 runs from 89 balls at lunch on Day 5, and his partner, Zak Crawley, is unbeaten on 42 from 93 deliveries. England need to score 254 more runs in the remaining two sessions of the fifth day's play to win the ongoing match against India and go 1-0 up in the five-match series. For England, first-innings centurion Ollie Pope will come out to bat at No. 3, and he will be followed by Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith. Root is England's leading run getter in the five-day format of the game, and Brook scored 99 runs in the first innings of the series opener.

‘Can you hit big sixes?': Watch Harry Brook distract Prasidh Krishna leading to India player getting dismissed in 1st Test

England's Harry Brook played a part with his chatter when he distracted India's last man Prasidh Krishna to try an audacious shot which led to visitors being bowled out for 364 runs in their second innings on Monday, establishing a lead of 370 runs at Leeds. Prasidh was in the middle when the stump mic picked up Brook asking the Indian bowler,' Can you hit big sixes?' to which Krishna replied,' If I had to, I would be called Brook.' In the very next ball, Prasidh went for a big hoick off Shoaib Bashir only to hole out to Josh Tongue with Brook's plans to distract the Indian working to a tee. "Can you hit big sixes?" — Harry Brook on the stump mic… and Prasidh goes for it on the very next ball and gets out. Classic Test cricket theatre — brought to you by the mic (and a bit of mischief). 🎭#ENGvIND | 1st Test, Day 5 | TUE, 24th JUNE, 2:30 PM on JioHotstar! — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 24, 2025 On Monday, another India lower-order collapse gave England a fighting chance of a thrilling victory in the first test at Headingley on Monday, with the hosts 21-0 in their second innings at the close of play on day four, chasing 371 to win. Josh Tongue, just as he did in the first innings, came to the fore when seeing off the Indian tail, with three wickets in four balls helping ensure the tourists lost their final six second-innings wickets for 31 runs. The collapse, which saw India all out for 364, gave the dangerous Jasprit Bumrah the chance to attack England before close of play, but neither opener, Zak Crawley nor Ben Duckett, looked troubled as they repelled the Indian attack until stumps. Reaching 371 would be England's second-highest successful test run chase against India, and the second-highest at Headingley, more than the Ben Stokes-inspired heroics on the same ground against Australia in 2019. The normally box-office Rishabh Pant started his innings quite conservatively, happy to watch on as KL Rahul moved smoothly to his century, his ninth in tests, eight of which have come overseas. After smashing two sixes in three balls after lunch, however, Pant hit the accelerator and brought out his typically flamboyant shots to all corners of the ground, with his hundred meaning, for the first time, that there have been five India centuries scored in one test match. Pant eventually tried one shot too many, caught chasing another six on the boundary by Crawley for 118 before Rahul fell shortly after tea for 137, again chopping onto the stumps off the bowling of Carse.
