Thai PM claims she has coalition support after resignation calls

BANGKOK — Thailand's prime minister, seeking to fend off calls for her resignation, said on Sunday all coalition partners have pledged support for her government, which she said would seek to maintain political stability to address threats to national security.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra has faced criticism for her perceived mishandling of a border row with Cambodia, including over a phone call with the country's former leader, Hun Sen, the audio of which was leaked on Wednesday.
After the initial leak, Hun Sen released the full audio, in which Paetongtarn appeared to kowtow before the veteran Cambodian politician and to denigrate a senior Thai military commander—crossing red lines for her critics and some former allies.
A major coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party, quit the ruling alliance soon after the leak, overshadowing Paetongtarn's premiership and a parliamentary majority cobbled together by her Pheu Thai party.
"The country must move forward. Thailand must unite and push policies to solve problems for the people," Paetongtarn, the daughter of influential former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, posted on X after a meeting with coalition partners, including the United Thai Nation party.
Prior to the post, the UTN had looked set to demand her resignation in return for backing the ruling coalition.
The government and the country's influential military share a common position, to back democratic principles and follow the provisions of the constitution, said the 38-year-old leader, a political neophyte who was appointed prime minister last year.
Activists, among them groups with a history of influential rallies against the Shinawatra administration, have scheduled a protest in Bangkok starting on June 28 to demand Paetongtarn's resignation. — Reuters

The comments represent the strongest condemnation to date by the Socialist leader, an outspoken critic of the Israeli offensive in Gaza sparked by Hamas's 2023 attack on Israel. Speaking to reporters at an EU summit in Brussels, Sanchez mentioned a recent human rights review by the bloc's diplomatic service which, he said, addressed "the catastrophic situation of genocide unfolding in Gaza." The report published last week found "indications" that Israel was breaching its human rights obligations under the cooperation deal which forms the basis for its trade ties with the EU. The text cited Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid for the Palestinian territory, the high number of civilian casualties, attacks on journalists and the massive displacement and destruction caused by the war. Sanchez said it was "more than obvious" that Israel was violating its obligations and that the bloc should suspend the cooperation deal "immediately." "It makes no sense" that the bloc has imposed 18 rounds of sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine but, "in a double standard, is not even capable of suspending an association deal," he added. Suspending the EU-Israel accord outright would require unanimity among member states, something diplomats see as virtually impossible due to divisions within the bloc. At the summit in Brussels divided EU leaders ended up kicking the can down the road on discussions about taking any action against Israel over Gaza. Leaders said in a statement that they "took note" of the EU report and called for more "discussions on a follow-up, as appropriate, in July 2025, taking into account the evolution of the situation on the ground." The Gaza war began after Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Palestinian militants also seized 251 hostages, with 49 still held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 56,156 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. The PLA will enhance combat readiness to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang told a regular press conference. "The Lai authorities keep pushing Taiwan into a dangerous situation of war; they are the cause of harming the livelihood of the Taiwanese people," Zhang said, adding that Lai's comments showed his "ill intentions." Lai on Sunday began a series of 10 speeches on "uniting the country," saying that democratically-ruled Taiwan was "of course a country" and that China had no legal or historical right to claim it. Beijing and Taipei have clashed over their competing interpretations of history in an escalating war of words over what Beijing views as provocations from Taiwan's government, saying it was impossible to "invade" what was already Chinese land.
