BANGKOK — Thailand's prime minister, seeking to fend off calls for her resignation, said on Sunday all coalition partners have pledged support for her government, which she said would seek to maintain political stability to address threats to national security.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra has faced criticism for her perceived mishandling of a border row with Cambodia, including over a phone call with the country's former leader, Hun Sen, the audio of which was leaked on Wednesday.
After the initial leak, Hun Sen released the full audio, in which Paetongtarn appeared to kowtow before the veteran Cambodian politician and to denigrate a senior Thai military commander—crossing red lines for her critics and some former allies.
A major coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party, quit the ruling alliance soon after the leak, overshadowing Paetongtarn's premiership and a parliamentary majority cobbled together by her Pheu Thai party.
"The country must move forward. Thailand must unite and push policies to solve problems for the people," Paetongtarn, the daughter of influential former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, posted on X after a meeting with coalition partners, including the United Thai Nation party.
Prior to the post, the UTN had looked set to demand her resignation in return for backing the ruling coalition.
The government and the country's influential military share a common position, to back democratic principles and follow the provisions of the constitution, said the 38-year-old leader, a political neophyte who was appointed prime minister last year.
Activists, among them groups with a history of influential rallies against the Shinawatra administration, have scheduled a protest in Bangkok starting on June 28 to demand Paetongtarn's resignation. — Reuters

Spain PM says Gaza in ‘catastrophic situation of genocide'

A woman mourns during the funeral of Palestinians who were killed in an Israeli airstrike earlier in the day, in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, June 26, 2025. REUTERS/ Ramadan Abed BRUSSELS — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Thursday said Gaza was in a "catastrophic situation of genocide" and urged the European Union to immediately suspend its cooperation deal with Israel. The comments represent the strongest condemnation to date by the Socialist leader, an outspoken critic of the Israeli offensive in Gaza sparked by Hamas's 2023 attack on Israel. Speaking to reporters at an EU summit in Brussels, Sanchez mentioned a recent human rights review by the bloc's diplomatic service which, he said, addressed "the catastrophic situation of genocide unfolding in Gaza." The report published last week found "indications" that Israel was breaching its human rights obligations under the cooperation deal which forms the basis for its trade ties with the EU. The text cited Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid for the Palestinian territory, the high number of civilian casualties, attacks on journalists and the massive displacement and destruction caused by the war. Sanchez said it was "more than obvious" that Israel was violating its obligations and that the bloc should suspend the cooperation deal "immediately." "It makes no sense" that the bloc has imposed 18 rounds of sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine but, "in a double standard, is not even capable of suspending an association deal," he added. Suspending the EU-Israel accord outright would require unanimity among member states, something diplomats see as virtually impossible due to divisions within the bloc. At the summit in Brussels divided EU leaders ended up kicking the can down the road on discussions about taking any action against Israel over Gaza. Leaders said in a statement that they "took note" of the EU report and called for more "discussions on a follow-up, as appropriate, in July 2025, taking into account the evolution of the situation on the ground." The Gaza war began after Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Palestinian militants also seized 251 hostages, with 49 still held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 56,156 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Pope Leo laments ‘diabolical intensity' of Middle East conflicts

"It is truly distressing to see the principle of 'might makes right' prevailing in so many situations today, all for the sake of legitimizing the pursuit of self-interest," Pope Leo XIV said. REUTERS/ Guglielmo Mangiapane/ File photo VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV said on Thursday that conflicts in the Middle East were raging with an unprecedented "diabolical intensity" and appealed for greater respect for international law, in comments to Catholic bishops and aid agencies operating in the region. At a meeting in the Vatican, the pontiff said countries in the region were being "devastated by wars, plundered by special interests, and covered by a cloud of hatred that renders the air unbreathable and toxic." "Today, violent conflict seems to be raging... with a diabolical intensity previously unknown," he said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza was "tragic and inhumane." Leo, elected on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, appealed last month for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. He did not name Israel in his remarks on Thursday. The US-born pope also did not directly address the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran that also saw the United States bomb suspected Iranian nuclear facilities but he called for countries to show better respect for international law. "It is truly distressing to see the principle of 'might makes right' prevailing in so many situations today, all for the sake of legitimizing the pursuit of self-interest," he said. "It is troubling to see that the force of international law and humanitarian law seems no longer to be binding, replaced by the alleged right to coerce others," Leo added. — Reuters

China's military vows to boost combat readiness after Taiwan president's speeches

A Chinese navy vessel is seen on a giant screen showing news footage about joint army, navy, air and rocket forces drills around Taiwan by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), outside a shopping mall in Beijing, China, April 1, 2025. REUTERS/ Florence Lo/ File photo BEIJING — The People's Liberation Army "shows zero tolerance to Taiwan independence separatist activities," a Chinese defense ministry spokesperson said on Thursday when asked about recent speeches made by Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te. The PLA will enhance combat readiness to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang told a regular press conference. "The Lai authorities keep pushing Taiwan into a dangerous situation of war; they are the cause of harming the livelihood of the Taiwanese people," Zhang said, adding that Lai's comments showed his "ill intentions." Lai on Sunday began a series of 10 speeches on "uniting the country," saying that democratically-ruled Taiwan was "of course a country" and that China had no legal or historical right to claim it. Beijing and Taipei have clashed over their competing interpretations of history in an escalating war of words over what Beijing views as provocations from Taiwan's government, saying it was impossible to "invade" what was already Chinese land. Beijing has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control and has a particular dislike for Lai, describing him as a "separatist." Taiwan strongly objects to China's sovereignty claims and says it is up to the island's people to decide their future. Tensions between China and Taiwan, including several rounds of Chinese war games, have grown over the last five years and now include daily air and naval deployments near the island. The last Chinese war games in April and October were widely seen by regional military attaches as a test of a possible blockade of Taiwan. The U.S. and its regional allies are watching closely, with some officials saying that China's deployments and its military modernization have raised the possibility Beijing may one day make good on its threats to take Taiwan by force. — Reuters
