Orlando considers ‘Dignity Buses' for homeless after dropping plans for SODO shelter
The City of Orlando said it is not actively looking for potential brick-and-mortar locations for a homeless shelter.
The news comes on the heels of Mayor Buddy Dyer confirming on Monday that the city has dropped plans for a proposed homeless shelter in SODO.
SODO is an Orlando neighborhood whose name was derived from its location 'South of Downtown.'
City leaders were looking to partner with Orange County to convert a former work release center on Kaley Street into a 300-bed homeless shelter.
The Mayor said the location was ultimately 'not feasible.'
The proposal also came with overwhelming opposition from many living in the SODO neighborhood.
'For those communities that don't want shelters in their backyard, they need to start preparing for tents in their front yard,' said Eric Gray, executive director of the Christian Service Center.
City officials will now consider implementing a shelter on wheels concept, also known as a 'Dignity Bus.'
The city is considering the purchase of two 45-foot buses that would house roughly 20 beds each and also include bathrooms.
'It's innovative and we need to try new things and because it addresses the 'not my backyard problem,' because we can move it if we need to,' Gray said.
Commissioner Patty Sheehan said the proposal is better than nothing.
'But it's not as good of a solution as getting people off the street, having them in a building, getting the medical care, all the wraparound services that we were really hoping to provide,' Sheehan said.
Orlando City Council is set to discuss the buses at its March 24th meeting.
Gray told Channel 9′s Ashlyn Webb that the buses would take at least 40 people off of the streets at any given time.
Because the city said the plan could benefit approximately 407 people over three years' time, officials plan to brand the proposed bus project as '407 Connect.'
If approved, the buses could be up and running by the end of June.

Sue Gray joins forces with Gary Neville
Sue Gray has joined forces with Gary Neville after being appointed chairman of a multinational advisory firm. The former chief of staff to Sir Keir Starmer has joined Consello UK, months after being forced out of No 10. Baroness Gray, who was given a place in the House of Lords in February, became a household name when she led the investigation into 'partygate'. Neville, the former Manchester United footballer, is chairman of Consello Strive UK, which is part of the Consello group of companies. The US-headquartered firm advises companies on growth and investment. Baroness Gray said she was 'delighted' to join the business. 'What Declan [Kelly, the chief executive] and his colleagues have accomplished in building the company to date is very impressive and I look forward to further supporting that growth in the UK and globally,' she said. Baroness Gray has made the move into the corporate world after leaving No 10 in October last year. She rose to fame as the head of the 'partygate' investigation, which laid bare the rule-breaking in No 10 during the Covid pandemic. She was appointed by Sir Keir as chief of staff in March 2023 when he was leader of the Opposition. The move was controversial because, months earlier, she had written an official report into the partygate allegations, which contributed to Boris Johnson's resignation as prime minister. Upon entering Downing Street, a power struggle broke out between Baroness Gray and other aides. In the role, she was paid a taxpayer-funded salary of £170,000 – meaning she was on £3,000 more than Sir Keir. She was ousted in October last year after losing out to Morgan McSweeney, a long-standing Labour insider who ran the party's general election campaign, who took her position. Downing Street announced she would become the Prime Minister's envoy for the nations and regions, but she did not take up the role. Friends said she had declined the position, but a No 10 source said Sir Keir was planning to rescind the offer because he was concerned about the media attention she would receive in the role. Declan Kelly, chief executive and chairman of Consello, said: 'Sue brings unparalleled insight from her decades of leadership in government service. 'Our entire team, as well as our clients, will benefit from her experience in countless ways and we are thrilled to welcome her to Consello.' Gray and New Gloucester voters reject school budget
Jun. 10—The towns of Gray and New Gloucester narrowly voted down a $35.4 million school budget Tuesday. The overall vote total was 1,211 in favor and 1,230 opposed, a margin of just 11 votes. In Gray, 644 voted in favor and 805 voted against, while in New Gloucester, 567 voted in favor and 425 voted against. The proposed School Administrative District 15 budget represented an increase of $2 million, or 5.9%, from the previous year. Gray Town Clerk Britt Barton told Lakes Region Now that, ahead of the vote, the budget was a hot topic among residents, with detractors saying that there has been too much left in the general fund over the years, and that there have been increases to line items that don't need them. SAD 15 Board Chair Penny Collins gave more detail on the process of crafting the budget, and which specific items were seeing an increase. She explained that most of the budget items were voted on at the towns' budget validation meeting on May 22, with all articles being passed as written, and any attempts to amend the articles downward were rejected. She said this year does not feel particularly different in terms of the community conversation, and that, while the district was optimistic about the fate of the budget, should it fail, they would simply restart the process of crafting the budget. Collins said more than three quarters of the $2 million came in the form of contracted pay increases for employees and an increase in health insurance, with the rest going towards district needs, bond payments, and adult education. Carolyn Justice won her select board race with 656 votes, with candidates Rachel L. Rumson and Joshua J. Pietrowicz receiving 562 and 400 votes respectively. Penny L. Collins won the race for MSAD #15 school board director with 712, with challenger Misty Coolidge receiving 661 votes. Copy the Story Link
