Isiekwe ready to be part of England's action-packed summer
The versatile 6ft7in forward had open heart surgery in 2022 after being diagnosed with a dilated aorta, a condition which could have ended his career at the age of 24.
Remarkably, within a year he was back making a match-high number of tackles at Allianz Stadium as Saracens defeated Sale Sharks to lift the Premiership trophy and he has continued to deal with the challenges life has thrown at him.
Isiekwe missed this year's Six Nations through injury but was back with the England set-up as part of a 33-man training squad, featuring 14 uncapped players, who assembled at Pennyhill Park this week as he sets his sights on being part of an action-packed summer.
Steve Borthwick's side begin with a visit from a France XV at Allianz Stadium on June 21 before travelling to Argentina for two Tests and rounding off with a clash against USA in Washington DC.
'To be back in with England is brilliant, having missed the Six Nations,' he said.
'I bumped into Ben Curry at the start of this camp – we were on that '17 tour of Argentina together.
'It's quite nice to look back on. We were in that bracket back then of being young and I remember how much we had to take on in quite a short space of time.
'We've been around it for a little bit now so the shoe is on the other foot - but it gives everyone a new perspective and new energy.'
Isiekwe was one of several youngsters selected for the trip to take on Los Pumas eight years ago, several of whom – including Ellis Genge, Tom Curry, Sam Underhill and Henry Slade – have gone on to become England stalwarts in the time since.
If selected this time around, the 11-cap 27-year-old will travel equipped with a fresh sense of perspective and look to make the most of soaking up the culture in South America.
'The 2017 tour was interesting, it was a bit of an information overload,' he said.
'It was our first year out of school and there was quite a big contingent of us at that stage. I remember having to absorb so much in a short space of time.
'I was probably a bit of a house cat on that tour, I stayed in the hotel quite a bit, but I remember walking around Buenos Aires and seeing how different it was, in terms of infrastructure and what the country is like.
'You get that sense of a different culture and it's nice to see it from that perspective. The rugby culture is different and the place is really interesting as well.'
Isiekwe has gained an insight into what to expect from his Saracens teammates Juan Martin Gonzalez and Lucio Cinti, with friendships to be put aside should they end up sharing the field this summer.
'I've spoken to them about it and I have given them a few words I won't repeat here!' he said.
'We have played with Juan and Lucio for two seasons and they are great players in their own right, we know what they bring, they have a lot of stardust.
'When you step on the field, it's business time, but afterwards hopefully they might give me some of their mate, or whatever they're drinking.'

England stars: We will not jeopardise caps to join breakaway league
England's top stars believe that international representation remains the pinnacle of the sport and would not wish to jeopardise potential Test selection in favour of joining a breakaway league. Telegraph Sport revealed on Monday how Mike Tindall, the Rugby World Cup winner and member of the Royal family, was one of the driving forces behind rugby's new breakaway global league, branded as 'R360, driving generational change in rugby'. Tindall and the organisers have stressed that their proposed league will fit in around the current international schedule but, at present, Steve Borthwick, the England head coach, cannot select any players outside the domestic structure. All of Tommy Freeman, Henry Pollock and Ellis Genge – winners at the Premiership Rugby Awards in central London on Tuesday night and Lions on the summer tour to Australia – believe that the conflict between financial stability and international representation would be a consideration, but that the draw of wearing an England shirt is virtually irresistible. 'The money would have to be off the charts,' said Freeman. 'Running out at Twickenham, there is no feeling like it. You want to leave your place in a good spot and hopefully pass that on to the next England player coming up. 'You never want to jeopardise [being selected for England]. If you were ever out of the loop then you ask the question because it is a short career – a third of your life. There is your health, your medical, and you've got to provide for your family – your kids and their kids. At some point money probably does talk but playing for England is my main concern. If I'm out the loop of the England set-up for a number of years then maybe it's different.' Genge admitted that for certain players there would be a financial allure, but that England remained the priority for him. 'I'd never want to leave England behind but I would say 90 per cent of rugby players would have to work for the rest of their lives after rugby,' said Genge. 'If they reached the echelons they have in this sport in other sports, I'd say they probably wouldn't. I think if the money is that lucrative, then people have decisions to make, don't they? I wouldn't hold it against them. 'I don't know if it's actually got legs to get off the ground but I think anything that stirs the pot and makes people start asking questions and think of new ideas is positive for the game. Whether it will get off the ground I don't know but I think anything like that is positive. I'm glad something is happening in rugby rather than it just be stagnating and everyone moaning.' Pollock, who made his England debut off the bench in the Six Nations against Wales, said it would '100 per cent' take a lot to give up playing for his country. 'I've not experienced playing multiple times for my country, so that's something I'm working towards,' said Pollock. 'There can be talks around this league and what's going to come, but currently I'm focused on myself, Northampton Saints and England. 'It depends where you are in your career. I wouldn't say I've kicked on enough to take that next step I guess. I'm very focused on Northampton Saints.'

Aberdeen ‘join race for prolific youth striker who had interest from Celtic during 51-goal season'

The Irish teenage sensation has several clubs on his trail - including Celtic and Aberdeen - after scoring 51 goals in all competitions last season. The Cliftonville prospect enjoyed an even more impressive campaign down an age group with the U18s too as he found the net 21 times in 25 outings. His sensational form has unsurprisingly put him on the map, with several clubs from across the UK keeping tabs on his development. Reid had two trial periods at Lennoxtown at the beginning of the year but Celtic didn't make a decision on the 16-year-old. He has plenty of options elsewhere though, should Celtic decline to make a swoop, as Premiership rivals Aberdeen are believed to be interested along with a host of other clubs. The Belfast News Letter states he has also caught the attention of EFL Championship sides Preston North End and Wrexham, the newly-promoted Welsh-based club owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Meanwhile, Aberdeen are also planning a swoop for another striker to add extra firepower to the first team for next season. Jimmy Thelin is set to lose Kevin Nisbet after his loan stint from Millwall ended, while Oday Dabbagh's future at his parent club Charleroi is currently unclear. Reports state, however, that Thelin has his eyes on another target to fill the void in attack. The Dons are reportedly interested in signing Ronan Hale from Ross County following their relegation to the Championship. He scored 18 goals for the Staggies last season but failed to prevent them from the drop. The 26-year-old still has two years left on his deal at Dingwall after only joining the club last summer but he is expected to move on in the coming weeks.
